I started The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah yesterday and am halfway through today. (I didn't like any of the December BOTM pics so I chose that one as a member fave.) I'm setting my goal for 50 this year! I bought The House in the Cerulean Sea yesterday so I'm excited for that one after I finish The Great Alone. I love love loved House in the Cerulean Sea.

Libby just gave me Admission by Julie Baxbaum so I guess that’s my starting point for 2021.

I finished One to Watch last night. It was super cute and I enjoyed it more than I expected to. I'm now going back to try to finish some books I started and abandoned last year. First up is The Book of Lost Friends.

I don't read as many books as you all bc I spend too much time reading the Washington Post and the Atlantic 🤣
But for real, Atlantic articles are basically novellas.

I finished My Dark Vanessa yesterday and it was intense. A modern day Lolita sort of theme. One of those books you’d feel a little weird recommending to anyone else. But it was well-written and heart-breaking and I’ll probably rate it a 4/5.
I really appreciated the take on grooming and gaslighting without romanticizing the teacher/student relationship to the reader.

I finished Holidaze tonight. Do not recommend that book - fell flat for me. I am starting Love Your Life by Sophie Kinsella I just finished Love Your Life. All I will say is that I liked the second half much better than the first!

I'm reading Atemschaukel from Herta Müller (The Hunger Angel in English) it won the nobel prize for literature in 2009 and I'm reading it in German so it's working for me for a book I'm intimidated by as well.
It's about the persecution of ethnic Germans in Romania by the Stalinist regime of the Soviet Union and it focuses on a 17 year old boy who is deported to a labor camp in Ukraine. So far it's very good and very depressing.

I know a lot of us use GoodReads.
If anyone is interested in sharing handles, I’ll happily share mine. I live a pretty online life so it doesn’t scare me too much.
Hit me up with a PM if you’re interested in connecting that way.

I really appreciated the take on grooming and gaslighting without romanticizing the teacher/student relationship to the reader. This. I also just finished it and found it hard to describe but also really interesting in how it portrayed grooming and the idea of victimization. A really heart wrenching read that was hard to put down.

I just started Anxious People by Fredrik Bachman and I am enjoying it, but I tend to love his books and how he describes people. The whole first chapter I anted to wrap up and keep for repeat reading.

I always start the year reading every book I got for my birthday (in December) and Christmas. I have about 100 pages left in Dune and then I'll be reading:
The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris The Dutch House by Ann Patchett She by H. Rider Haggard Dream of the Red Chamber by Cao Xueqin Snow by John Banville Pachinko by Min Jin Lee
It's an eclectic mix! Considering that Dream of the Red Chamber is 1000 pages long and originally published in the 1790s, I'm thinking it'll take a while to get through. But I'm committed.
I probably won't read any more of the Dune series. I like it but I don't love it.

I’m really struggling to find a book to read. Basically I’m overthinking everything because I’m going to have to actually pay for a book on my kindle since the library is only open for hold pickups.

Can you get any of the library apps on your kindle? I think I remember you saying you were going to grab your H’s Kobo? That way you can borrow digitally....it’s so wonderful!

Also same re December birthday and birthday and Christmas books! That's neat! Dune is my dad's favourite series, he's read the whole thing 4, maybe more, times. He suggested it because I loved the Game of Thrones series so much but it's nowhere near as compelling as GoT, in my opinion.

I think I mentioned these a year ago, but have you read The Revolution of Marina M and Chimes of a Lost Cathedral by Janet Fitch? They're set during the Russian Revolution and they are absolutely wonderful. I recently read The Paying Guests by Sarah Waters and it was my favourite book of 2020. Set in 1920s London and combines a beautiful, compelling love story with a lot of suspense.
