That made me a bit sad for her, and honestly makes me wonder what her home life/support system was like that she was able to be alone with an older man so much at the age of 13. I don't fully disagree with how strange it is that the age of consent varies so much from place to place and that there is mixed messaging about that. I'm also not trying to change anyones mind about the book - I really liked it and I didn't read it as condoning the relationship between Wavy and Kellen (especially when it was his POV and you see how conflicted he is). It tells the story that is probably more common than we want to admit and makes you look at these issues.

Have you read her interviews about the book and consent? I think after reading those, she very much is condoning the relationship and ones like it. I read a general article about the controversy but not a full interview with her. Maybe she does condone them? I still feel, who am I to judge? One of my grade school friends got pregnant at 14, by a 19 year old man. This guy was her boyfriend. She had his second baby at 16. At 17 her Dad gave her permission to marry. By 21 she had 4 kids with him. Their marriage didn’t last. But the circumstances of it were illegal at a time. Do I condone statutory rape? NO! But I have seen plenty of circumstances where these situations become someone’s only family. My girlfriend didn’t have a mother involved in her. Just a Dad, who wasn’t a good one. The man she had a family with provided for her and loved her for some time. I guess I'm having an issue with a male over 18 who is knowingly engaging in a relationship that they know is wrong, or illegal. And it seems that in these cases it is always the male that is older. I mean, I'd still feel the same way if the female was the older one in this type of relationship. If you truly love this person, why can't you wait until they are of age?

The man she had a family with provided for her and loved her for some time. I have a hard disagree on this. I feel very comfortable villainizing a 19 year old for impregnating a 14 year old. That's a 7th grader and a college student. The 14 year old was a victim of abuse. Which is even sadder in a situation where a child has been a victim of other types of family abuse as well. She didn't need someone to care for her in a sexual way, she needed someone to care for her as an adult cares for a child. I 100% agree. It’s rape, it’s wrong. I work in the same town I grew up in, in a space that helps people in these sorts of situations. The reality is it happens more than people care to realize and the trauma bond that’s created through it, is incredibly hard to break. But I go back to where I started, demonizing their situation rarely helps. They need empathy and trauma informed care.

*I like seeing book covers, so I include them in my posts. Covers are behind spoilers. I finished The Bluest Eye last night. It was such a heartbreaking story, but necessary. Not every story is a happy one. Some people have it hard their entire life. Their stories deserve to be told, too. I'm picking up Where The Crawdads Sing from the library on my way home tonight. I've put off reading this one for a while, it seems.

All the Ugly and Wonderful Things was a book I had no idea how to rate. It made me uncomfortable the entire time and broke my heart many times. On the other hand I couldn't put it down and even though I read it many years ago I still remember it very well. It's a book that has stuck with me and gave me a lot to think about. For that I think I gave it four stars but I sure can understand why people wouldn't like it at all.
I started A Court of Silver Flames last night. So far so good but I wish I had done a series re-read first because I'm having a hard time remembering everything about Nesta's story.

Huh. I still don’t read what she said as condoning it. Different perspectives, but I can understand why this book is not for you.

I’m almost done with my dark Vanessa and ugh can’t wait to be done with it. The push just became available from the library so I will probably start on that. The past several books I’ve read have been meh at best. I don't know why I read My Dark Vanessa, I was disturbed the whole time. Me too and I finished the book....

Yay! The bad streak has been broken! I read The Vanishing Half, which was wonderful. I honestly expected it to be more depressing than it was, but it was actually a pretty easy read that dealt with a lot of serious subjects. Loved it. Then I read The Hunger. Also really liked it. It reminded me a lot of Dan Simmons’ The Terror. I love Dan Simmons so The Hunger suffered just slightly in comparison but it still had me on Wikipedia researching the Donner party, so I was definitely enjoying it. And, finally, just finished The Magnolia Sword which is a Mulan retelling by the author of the Lady Sherlock books. It was also fantastic! I believe it was classified as YA so there was a romance thread but nothing steamy at all. byjove have you read this one?

I finished The Girl Before and enjoyed a lot of it. I wasn’t happy with a couple parts of the end but otherwise enjoyed it.
I also finally finished The Guest List. I liked it. Of course I want an update on everyone.
I tried to read Exit by Belinda Bauer but it was so agonizingly slow like “then he bent down and tied his shoes in double knots”. That isn’t a real except but everything was like that. Overly descriptive and slow to the point. I decided it wasn’t for me, despite good reviews, and returned it.
I’m going to start The Boy in the Woods next.

just finished the push. woof - i have so many thoughts. i don’t know how to spoiler so i’ll try to be as vague as possible. it would definitely be interesting to read something from violet’s perspective or even the husband’s. i don’t know what to believe, my overwhelming thoughts center around how much therapy could have helped blythe from the beginning just to sort out her mom/dad issues. i don’t know. i feel like i should read something light but i think i’m going to start lock every door today.

polson It was really good! I always enjoy the taking of already devastating historical events and adding a fantastical element. I added The Deep to my want to read list as soon as I finished The Hunger. If you haven’t, and you don’t mind gigantic books, you should try The Terror. It’s very similar, about the Franklin Expedition trying to find the Northwest Passage. It is very long though. I flew through it but I know I sometimes have trouble starting books with high page counts because of the time commitment.

Another over here that loved The Hunger. I’m not a horror reader, but this was a book club choice from a friend who loves the genre. And it so opened my mind to the diversity of what’s out there right now. I haven’t read The Deep yet, but I intend to!

I just finished (and loved) Murder on Cold Street. I had been saving it for quite a while and finally caved. I have the second Veronica Speedwell or Ruth Ware’s The Lying Game to decide between while I wait for my next romance subscription box to come.

She has a new spy thriller one coming out called Red Widow which sounds really good. She used to work for the CIA so I'm sure the book will be excellent! I finished The Secret Lives of Church Ladies which is a short story collection about the lives of black women and it is so so so good - I highly recommend it!

I finished Throne of Glass and am starting Ready Player Two.
Throne of Glass was better than I thought it would be. I liked the character more than in the first book.
RP2 is more of the same but H wanted my opinion on it and none of my other holds have come in so...

I just finished Every Breath You Take by Ann Rule. It was good but I felt like the murderer didn’t get enough punishment. He is just an awful, awful egotistical asshole. Book cover Next up is to be decided...
