Hi everyone. I'm jumping in here. I finished The Sanatorium and was kind of disappointed in the ending. I started All the Ugly and Wonderful Things and I somehow missed all of the controversy about the book initially, and definitely couldn't continue reading it once things got weird. So, now I'm reading a book my grandma sent me, Magic Hour by Kristin Hannah. My bff just lent me The Sanatorium, the reviews are so mixed so I'm curious. For All the Ugly & Wonderful Things, I will happily go on a loooooong rant about how angry it makes me. And I have on my bookish fb groups! lol The people in those groups love this book.

I get why it's not for everybody, and it was not an easy read by any means, but it's in my top 10 for sure.

I said I don’t have a peloton but here for the books and they added me. Give it a go. When I tried I just left that part blank and it didn't work so I'll try this and see. It worked! I'm in! Thank you guys. And I can already tell this is going to be trouble, lol. The first thing I saw was the list of kindle deals and The Space Between Worlds is on there for $1.99 which has been on my library hold list for weeks. Woohoo!

I loved it hard, but I certainly understand it’s not a for everyone sort of book.

How do you reconcile the relationship between Wavy and Kellen? I don’t know how to verbalized how I reconcile it, other than I’ve seen it. I grew up in a poor, rural area where there were lots of drugs and crime. I saw girls get pregnant, multiple times from men who should be in jail for statutory rape and be with them, very in love for a looong time. And when it’s what you know, it makes it so much harder to judge. And then when you see how HARD Wavy and Kellen need each other’s emotional support and how alone they are in the world, it’s hard not to accept the gravitational pull they have to one another. I feel so deeply for both characters.

More like I could understand how and why they relied on each other. I also felt that it was written really well. It was disturbing but many good books are.

How do you reconcile the relationship between Wavy and Kellen? basically exactly what kittyriot, said - the author did such a good job to make me feel such deep empathy for Wavy (and Kellan to a point). Also, I don't agree with their relationship (especially with how young she was when it started), and I honestly don't think the author wrote it in a way condoning it, but I understand how it came to be and why it did. They were literally all they had and the only people who ever seemed to care about each other - it would be so crazy hard to let that go. It's hard for me to articulate exactly why I love it, but I just found it so beautifully written and it made me think so much.

But I do talk about the content of the book so maybe skip if you don't want to know details. Yes, so I thought the writing was really well done, but the content was gross. I've seen other people take this differently, but IMO the book felt like it was endorsing the relationship between Wavy and Kellan. I've seen so many arguments about how Wavy was wise beyond her years or wasn't your typical girl so it wasn't the same as other predatory relationships. And I think that is incredibly dangerous conversation to be had. A 13 year old can't consent to sex. End of. Wavy didn't need a grown man to fall in love with. She needed an adult to care for her in the way an adult cares for a child. Kellan was just another abusive adult taking advantage of her, like everyone else in her life previously. I also felt like the aunt (was it an aunt?) who called the police at the end was made to look like The Bad Guy for reporting. Again, I saw other people disagree but that was the vibe I got.

I got Space Between Worlds for my BOTM awhile ago and really enjoyed it! I thought the author did an excellent job of explaining just enough of the science so you accepted it and didn’t go into so much detail you started to see holes. I always find that a tricky line with time travel or multiple universes. I hope you like it!

I'm just bothered that the author has said in interviews that consent is a gray area, and not black and white. She also admits to being in a relationship like the one between Wavy and Kellen and really seems to think that it wasn't a big deal.

I don’t think the author of ATUABT is trying to condone these sorts of relationships, I believe she’s only trying to give context and light to how and when they happen.
I have all sorts of examples of similar, sometimes creepy relationships. It’s sad, sure...but it happens and deamonizing all the people in them doesn’t help get them the help and support they need to make a different go of life.

I’m almost done with my dark Vanessa and ugh can’t wait to be done with it. The push just became available from the library so I will probably start on that. The past several books I’ve read have been meh at best.

I bailed on The Perfect Marriage after a few chapters. The writing style wasn’t for me. I may try it again another time. I started The Boy From the Woods by Harlan Coben instead and I’m enjoying it so far. I just read that recently! I’ll be interested to see what you think of it 😊

The first Lady Darby book was ok- I think dragged down by a not great narrator. Starting the 2nd Maiden Lane now.
I also read A Fire Sparkling a couple of books back- a WW2 novel about twin sisters and a then and now timeline. Pretty sure I got it as a kindle first read a few years back. If you like The Alice Network or the like, I'd recommend it.

One of my grade school friends got pregnant at 14, by a 19 year old man. This guy was her boyfriend. She had his second baby at 16. At 17 her Dad gave her permission to marry. By 21 she had 4 kids with him. Their marriage didn’t last. But the circumstances of it were illegal at a time. Do I condone statutory rape? NO! But I have seen plenty of circumstances where these situations become someone’s only family. My girlfriend didn’t have a mother involved in her. Just a Dad, who wasn’t a good one. The man she had a family with provided for her and loved her for some time.

I haven’t read All The Ugly and Wonderful Things so I can’t weigh in specifically on that book. But I personally think you can enjoy a book and also be critical of it at the same time. We talked about Ready Player One here a few months ago and I said I enjoyed it. Are there misogynistic problems with the book? Absolutely. Did I still like reading it as an adventure story? Sure did. Same goes for The Last Mrs. Parrish. I thought it was a fun thriller and also didn’t like the domestic violence aspect of it.
I guess what I’m trying to say is I think conflicting opinions (even within yourself) are ok and what make art interesting. I don’t think enjoying ATUAWT means you’re condoning relationships like the one portrayed within it.

That's a 7th grader and a college student. The 14 year old was a victim of abuse. Which is even sadder in a situation where a child has been a victim of other types of family abuse as well. She didn't need someone to care for her in a sexual way, she needed someone to care for her as an adult cares for a child.

It's been a while since I read it, but I'm pretty sure Wavy never ends up pregnant. I totally understand that this book isn't for everyone, and I get the strong reaction to it. I don't condone the relationship at all, and I still don't see the book as condoning it either. It's a book about traumatized people looking for some semblance of normalcy in a abnormal situation. The author grew up in Kansas in a poor family with serious drug issues (if I remember correctly) and I think situations like this are more normal than people want to admit. ETA - i see the 14/17 year old wasn't about the book. ignore that.
