I see a lot of COVID survivors really worried about this because CFS is sort of nebulous and not really taken seriously/treated, and this is actually a type of encephalitis (I think) that is historically not really studied or given much attention It really isn't taken seriously at all. I have a cousin with CFS and fibromyalgia. It took her the better part of 30yrs and a ridiculous number of doctors to get to that diagnosis.

Medical professional here. My eyes rolled so hard at that nurse post that they about fell out of my head. That statement totally and completely downgrades everything healthcare workers have been facing. Illness, PPE shortages, losing coworkers/their own lives.
This has not been all sunshine and roses, and to act otherwise is incredibly offensive.

Yeah big fat fucking no to that nurse post.
Basically what everyone already said. Not comparable. Even though I hate the “nurses signed up for this” because no we didn’t sign up to do our jobs without proper PPE and possibly catch a virus and die....
Also a lot of HCW didn’t make it out to the other side. Lots of people have died. So no.
And lots of HCWs ARENT okay.
*i am a nurse.

We didn’t sign up to work in a pandemic without proper PPE. Teachers sure as hell didn’t sign up to work with kids potentially spreading disease without even knowing they are ill.

We already ask teachers to be human shields from gunfire. I don't think we need to put this on them too

The org I work for just went fully remote forever and I'm dreaming of taking up one of these offers if I wasn't terrified of breathing air on a plane for 6+ hours.

Bermuda is beautiful, it would be great to spend a year there. I would probably be scared off by their whole water conservation problem though. I love my showers.

We were in Bermuda last summer and had a very nice chat with our server at the beach from the day who was from the Philippines. He says he spends his 4-5 months of the season in Bermuda working and that is enough money to keep his family back home for the rest of the year. A lot of hotel employees are employed this way. DH and I definitely had a conversation about him back in April worrying about his work and family.

Of these options I’ve only been to Estonia and it was only for 2-3 nights. It was lovey and I would like to be there right now.

The place I've most fully considered is Costa Rica. 90 day stay without a visa, I would take that through Dec - Feb when it's a frozen hellscape here. I'm not sure how to deal with the flight though. Get fitted for a really good mask and then do not take it off even for a second the whole time? I'd still be terrified. I flew home from Rwanda on March 14th as the world was changing and I vividly remember that fear of the air and the invisible virus.

I haven't visited any of these places but they all seem like a great opportunity to live somewhere new for a while.

Portugal is also a great digital nomad location, though obviously not for Americans right now.

If I didn’t have the dogs I would go in a heartbeat. I think the flight is scary but it’s one event and you just take as many precautions as possible and get tested after. I wouldn’t risk a flight for a vacation right now but if it was a gateway to get out for multiple months I would try to make it work.

I just don't know what it is going to take for all Americans to take this seriously.
Like it is so different here. Some Belgian asshats in a Lisbon expat(immigrant) group on Facebook called Portugal militant for their mask wearing and LOADS of people jumped on him saying it's why we've done better than Belgium in managing things and I was so greatful that people really are serious about it here. Because like real talk Portugal has one of the fewest ICU beds per capita in the eu. We've increased it recently but if we got hit like Spain or Italy it would be devastating.

I am seeing so many people post photos of big get togethers on Facebook and I feel like I’m taking crazy pills and we are living in different worlds. Most of them of them are outdoors or on boats but still, they are big groups of people.
Don’t get me wrong, I have two couples and their kids that we have put into our “circle” but we have only seen them outdoors and distanced and it’s only been the 6 of us (plus the kids but 4/6 of the kids are babies so are immobile). I cannot fathom going to a boat party of like 20 people right now.
It’s like a weird passive gaslighting.

We were going to go and then my mom told us just how many people were invited. We stayed home instead. So now we're the bad ones.

willow I feel this too. So many pictures of weekend trips with friends, large groups at restaurants, and seemingly living life as usual. Meanwhile I feel like I'm loosening up by going to Target to browse for clothes for my kids for 30 minutes early on a Saturday morning. My kids go back to care programs this week as virtual school starts and this is only out of pure necessity as we both work in Healthcare.

My MIL said we should come visit them - in Florida - for a few days so we can relax and N can use the pool.
She was 100% serious and completely taken aback when H told her we were likely not traveling for quite some time, especially to Florida because their rates are one of the highest in the country.
She was also in denial about that. I seriously wonder what it’s like in her head sometimes.

I'm glad everyone hated the nurse fb post. I just found it so odd.
In other crazy news,I signed a contract to work 8 weeks starting in Oct on a covid unit. Its where the non intubated patients are, so less critical in theory. I'm doing the online training and it has a list of suggested PPE I provide for myself. So thats cool.
