My MIL said we should come visit them - in Florida - for a few days so we can relax and N can use the pool. She was 100% serious and completely taken aback when H told her we were likely not traveling for quite some time, especially to Florida because their rates are one of the highest in the country. She was also in denial about that. I seriously wonder what it’s like in her head sometimes. My brother and his family just got back from a road trip to Florida. They stayed with family there and supposedly isolated as much as possible. But damn. I was so mad that they went. And they didn't even quarantine when they got back. Ugh. I just hope they didn't bring it back with them. My dad babysat for them today since they both had to work. If he gets it from them, I will lose my shit on my brother, I swear.

Based on their behavior, I almost wonder if we have the same Florida in laws. 😂 Ours are still planning to go on our Hilton Head, SC vacation in a couple weeks. They are leaning hard on DH to go. We’ve been telling them for two months that we wouldn’t be going unless the infection rate there went way down, but his dad is acting all affronted/betrayed about the fact that we really aren’t going to join them. 🙄

I'm glad everyone hated the nurse fb post. I just found it so odd. In other crazy news,I signed a contract to work 8 weeks starting in Oct on a covid unit. Its where the non intubated patients are, so less critical in theory. I'm doing the online training and it has a list of suggested PPE I provide for myself. So thats cool. Provide for yourself..... 😱 what are the suggestions?

My mom just asked if we were interested in going to visit my 87 year old grandparents in TN for a Labor Day gathering. My aunt and uncle from FL are traveling up for it as well. Um, wut??! Absolutely not. I know they're old and time is limited. But a gathering is not the way.

Provide for yourself..... 😱 what are the suggestions? It's supposedly for my comfort and not mandatory. But: My own goggles, and a plastic n95 mask with replaceable filters (they said more comfortable for long shifts), or a resuable face shield to pair with a traditional n95, disppsable shoe covers and hair coverings (recommended all hair covered for our safety) and skin barrier patches for face. They will provide clean scrubs (no pockets in OR scrubs 😭) and will give you 1 n95 mask a week (up to 4 shifts or replace if dirty/broken) if you need it. They also put real stethoscopes in each room and a flash light for neuro checks, and scissors etc. So they are providing everything I need for my job. I dont mind acquiring my own PPE if I 1. Can find it not marked up by 50x and 2. If it makes me more comfortable during work. Also keep in mind im doing a 8 week contract not a FT employee so expectations are a little different.

I just don't know what it is going to take for all Americans to take this seriously. Like it is so different here. Some Belgian asshats in a Lisbon expat(immigrant) group on Facebook called Portugal militant for their mask wearing and LOADS of people jumped on him saying it's why we've done better than Belgium in managing things and I was so greatful that people really are serious about it here. Because like real talk Portugal has one of the fewest ICU beds per capita in the eu. We've increased it recently but if we got hit like Spain or Italy it would be devastating. I think one of the problems with the United States is that it's just SO big. In every single country in the world you have people taking this more or less seriously. I mean we just got back from holidays in Italy and even there you had people wearing masks under their chin or not correctly(much less people but still, however you also had lots more who followed it much more strictly than Austria or Germany) but overall I'm pretty sure there's no place with 100% compliance to these rules. The problem is that when you have millions not following anything you just can't make a dent. Plus many of our virologists say that keeping distance is one of the most important things but as I've understood it there are almost no restrictions on amounts of people allowed in stores or keeping distance in most places in the States. When you add on to that the no one seems to enforce any of this in most places it's a recipe for disaster. You get a big fine here if you're not wearing a mask on the train, meet up with too many, etc and they've increased checks as our numbers have slowly risen again. It's so hard for the people following all the rules and taking this all so seriously. I feel really sorry for them because they just aren't getting a break. I mean my life is basically back to normal and I feel as safe as possible during a pandemic and I wish this for everyone. It isn't like everything is perfect here but for example when a parent said they tested positive for covid at my SILs daycare on Thursday. The daycare was closed on Friday, all parents, staff, and children were tested Friday. And they knew everyone was negative by Saturday so they were able to open again on Monday, and the tests were free for everyone. But it seems next to impossible to have this type of system in place with the US healthcare system.

adelbert oh I know. And in Portugal it is the same. It's not a 100% compliance but the vast majority of people pop their masks on for stores and daycare because they understand its how we get to keep going out and getting back to doing nice things. I think I'm just baffled by people like my parents who take it seriously and if they were here going to visit Germany or Italy I would feel ok. But no, they are in the states in Virginia where despite having a population smaller than Portugal is averaging 4-5x the number of cases daily. And they decided to go to Florida for July 4 for 9 days and just flew to San Francisco and Yosemite for 2 weeks. Like those are entirely irresponsible and unnecessary trips in places with high numbers. But their behavior isn't admonished at all where they are. And I totally agree that there has to be accountability. we also have hefty fines and you can be arrested if you violate public orders. I think I'm just sad and in my feels. Outside of the Lisbon region there are almost no cases now. It's actually a great time if you want to visit Porto or the Algarve. Tourism is way down because no air ridge with the UK yet. So it's quiet and great weather. ..

It really is a combination of problems, IMO.
-Absolute absence of leadership. Governors and Mayors should be calling the shots but there should be firm, consistent leadership from the federal government -no national testing strategy -lack of compliance with public health recommendations -rampant disinformation -pandemic fatigue. People are over it so they think it's over.
The only store I know if that is still limiting the number of people indoors at a time is Trader Joe's. But our cases here are creeping back up. Costco is acting like we're out of the woods.

Costco is acting like we're out of the woods. Our grocery stores went back to it this week because we are on the state monitoring list. So a bunch of measures that had been relaxed and shouldn’t have been were back. Limiting numbers in stores, no reusable bags, can’t unload the groceries on the belt until the person in front is fully done are all back. Now if people could follow the one way aisles that would be great.

TBH I haven't been reading the news so much lately since the headlines are all so tough. We wear masks, don't really go anywhere, and keep our distance from people. It's the little control we have. I spent some time going through the news this morning and it is just so frustrating that our country is not willing to get it together.

But it seems next to impossible to have this type of system in place with the US healthcare system. Yes! We have patchwork leadership and a patchwork pandemic here, with uncoordinated state responses. Some states lack any real COVID public health leadership and have soaring infection rates (e.g.Georgia), while others have strict regulations and very low rates (e.g. Northeastern states). In the states that lack strong science-based leadership, many people are trying to do their best, but they are left making every single decision about COVID precautions based on individual/family risk, without a government directing the larger goal of managing the infection rate at a regional level. Many of the states that are devoid of public health leadership on COVID also lack public health and medical resources in general, so it’s challenging to get tested, let alone get medical care and logistical help to quarantine if you are infected. People are left scrambling with few good ways to avoid getting sick other than completely isolating themselves, which is an unsustainable solution for more than a few months. Most of us in states with governors who are demonstrating reasonable leadership feel helpless to do anything about rising infection rates in other states. The geographic patchiness further confuses risk assessment and decision making. What is safe to do in NY right now is not safe in VA and what is safe in VA is not safe in Florida. It all fucking sucks. Our country needed strong federal leadership to guide us through this crisis and instead we got fucking 45. 😭

I check the trends every few days, but at this point we are social distancing from everyone except our medical providers (with whom we are masked), only recreating outside in uncrowded parks in our own little family unit, and avoiding any indoor shopping/dining. I’m disappointed that VA hasn’t done a bit more to drive down infection rates to the point where we would feel comfortable doing more. And since getting kids back into school wasn’t enough motivation, I don’t see that happening at all at this point.

I had to drop off my computer to get worked on and there was a gatekeeper directing people to where they needed to go and they said no more than 40 customers at a time.

Even in California where we have a competent governor, a lot of the decision making has been left up to counties. Believe it or not, there are a lot of very conservative counties in the state, and conservative cities/areas where lots of people are of the “plandemic” mindset. So it’s a patchwork response here too. Very frustrating.

I would say the main reason America can't get it together is because of Donald Trump.
And I mean that. I 100,000% blame him for why we are where we are. If he took this seriously from the beginning, listened to doctors and didn't promote bullshit, our fragile system would not be fucking collapsing right now and we would not have lost so many people.

We decided we're going to do the virtual learning option this year, or at least the 1st semester. I'm in mourning all over again. Dd1 is sad about losing her senior year. Dd2 is sad about missing her friends for even longer. It's going to be an ugly mess in my house.
Anyone here have some insight on Edmentum? Our district is slow with the details other than "it's flexible".

We're pretty much locked down too. DH goes to the grocery store and the liquor store, but that's it in terms of indoor spaces. We go for walks, play in the backyard, go to the park, etc. DH and I each do a sit-in-the-backyard socially-distanced drink with a few friends maybe once a month.
If the weather is nice later this week, we have a reservation to walk through for our little local zoo. That will be the first "going out" as a family thing we've done since going to my mom's house for a weekend in early July.

They flew to Florida on vacation/to visit family a few weeks ago (with a layover in Atlanta). Posted about it all over both their social media. He was back at work right away doing both office visits and surgeries. My office has a 14 quarantine policy if we travel out of state at all. I can’t imagine that a hospital wouldn’t? Or maybe he just didn’t admit to it? Or the PPE is sufficient to protect? Either way- I was really surprised he was back with patients within two days of returning.
