its a gift but I have to give up OTF forever to help cover the cost of it, so it’s slightly less great 😂 OMG then get exactly what you want. Even if that requires two things. For real because you love OTF so you need to replace it as fully as you can. I say rower or treadmill and tonal combo I very much agree with this. If you don't want to waste money you need to go with what you actually want the most and think you'll use. You don't want to have expensive gym equipment that just collects dust because you don't love it and don't use it but was initially a bit cheaper. Especially considering you're giving up OTF!

I would not agree to give up OTF forever. Never say never! A lot could change and I would hate to say I would never go back.
I have read everything and I say get the Peloton tread. It would be the closest thing to OTF which you love and if you can afford it, do it! Once you pay out the total worth of the tread (I think it's like $4K), does the month cost drop down to $40 or $12?

FWIW, I don’t know if they still offer it but I don’t have a monthly Peloton payment. They offered some savings if I paid for a two year subscription upfront.

It really didn't matter what the answer to the monthly fee thing was, I still say get the tread.

I say tread too. If you go all in on home gym life and you use it all the time with no desire to go back to OTF, ask for the tonal for Christmas.

If I'm only going to walk and maybe job occasionally, does a tread still make sense?
I asked about walking workouts while in the Pelo store, and she sales person seemed to think being a walker would be just fine.
This morning I'm sitting at my desk, drafting up my comparison spreadsheet.

Yes, still worth it, even with walking. Their walking workouts are tough! And I find them harder than jogging sometimes. Plus, you live where it gets very cold and snowy. It'll be worth it in the winter for sure.

I'll second or third that I think you should go w/ the tread. It'll be the most versatile for you and you can always start to build a stash of dumbbells and whatnot if you want to do more strength. Or get the Tonal for Christmas, like Cher said. I think you should just go with your gut on this and not do too much more analysis. Get what you like/want!

This morning I'm sitting at my desk, drafting up my comparison spreadsheet. If you’re just going to walk/jog I think a regular treadmill would be fine. I have a cheap Sole one and it gets the job done. I told myself if I used it enough to justify the Peloton one I’d upgrade after a year.

I could just use the pelo app on an ipad with a cheaper tread, but having that big screen right in your face at eye level was pretty sweet.

That’s what you did at OTF right? yeah it is. Sometimes ran, but only after months of build-up. I’m thinking you will use it for Bootcamp style classes. So I have to think it doesn’t matter if you run/walk/jog, you’re doing the cardio portion similar to as you would at OTF and getting a similar workout. If you were buying a treadmill just to walk, without the class component, I think which treadmill you bought would matter less.

I know I'm being exasperatingly annoying with all of this, so I appreciate everyone's help and welcome any other people's questions for their own home workout crises.
I'm mentally stuck because I'm trying to replicate the feelings I get from a full on tread+rower+heavy weights gym with budget and space limitations.

Also, your over analysis is actually probably smarter than my method of seeing a Peloton commercial a couple of years ago and just ordering it. I had never taken a spin class before. Thankfully I ended up obsessed and it worked out.

coffee I think with the app only (and not a machine), that I lose some features to peloton, like leaderboard? I do like watching other people’s effort at OTF to benchmark myself like a creeper. But I like your plan. I need to make a spreadsheet of options and prices to see if H has strong feelings one way or another. The apple app has the leaderboard. Android version does not. Neither will show metrics though unless you have some way to sync to it.

If you go with a different rower/subscription combo (like a water rower w a city row app), will it still be as motivating for you? I’m thinking since you won’t have the metrics/screen/in your face stuff the way a rower w it’s own subscription would...

I’m thinking since you won’t have the metrics/screen/in your face stuff the way a rower w it’s own subscription would... good question. I had assumed the CityRow app with a basic waterrower would act the same as the CityRow-branded rower. I need to look at that. But I think if I went the WaterRower route, I'd just get the CityRow one. It's a little more $ but it's all done in a package.

brux, in the name of research I downloaded the Hydrow app free trial and have been checking out the workouts with my water rower. Pros: they play good music and I like that they row on the Charles River. Cons: it doesn’t seem like there is as much variability in the workout (they primarily change the targeted stroke per minute or time) and while they have some “on the mat” workouts, there aren’t any bootcamps or classes that are a mix. Take this review with a huge grain of salt, however, because I really suck at rowing. Also, I love all the analysis in this thread! I keep dropping “hints” to my H that I want a peloton bike for my birthday.

I really like having weights and a functional training machine in our home gym and personally I think I would use something like the tonal the most. I try and get my cardio in during the day just by walking or biking or hiking outside and only use our curved treadmill to warm up and basically hate every minute of it (which is why I never even considered a Peloton). But I know in MN you have a longer stretch where that isn't possible due to snow (unless you get into both mall walking and Nordic skiing!) So it probably makes more sense to get something focusing on the cardio aspect. Such a fun conundrum to have!
