For my birthday, H is letting me pick some sort of fancy home gym equipment with the live or online video classes component. (Those incessant IG ads must've snagged his attention.)
We do have physical space limitations that might make certain things impossible to fit, but for now, the world is my oyster. He's suggesting things like the Peloton bike, the Peloton tread, the Mirror, the Tonal system, and I suggested the Hydrow rower. But I can only pick one.
For me, brand isn't key (I'd be happy with a other brands of equipment and the subscription service), I just want to pick something that will be worth the cost.
If you could have (or do have) something like this, let me know about it. And if you have one of these and hate it, I'd love that too.
One thing I'd have to give up to justify the cost is my OTF membership. I'm ok with that bc I'm not going anyway in Covid life, but I enjoy the cardio+weights+community aspect of OTF.
And I've done spin classes a handful of times and dreaded every single minute, so I'm skeptical that I'd like a Peloton (or Sunny) bike.

TRX systems have dropped substantially in price. Amazon has it for 169 right now and it dropped to 149 a few times already this summer. Just a thought to supplement whatever you end up purchasing.

The newer systems apparently are more portable and have anchor systems to use on a door or even looped around a tree branch or pole outside.

This is such a great gift!
No recommendation, but I've been seriously considering the Hydrow rower (yeah IG got to me too). It works more muscle groups than the Peloton, so that's a mark in its favor.

I would do bad things for a peloton treadmill.

Do you currently have other home gym equipment? I’ve really loved using the Peloton app with my normal treadmill and weights. I think I’m going to pull the trigger on getting the peloton bike because everyone I’ve talked to loves it so much and we don’t have an exercise bike. I’ve really liked Peloton’s programming and instructors, and I’ve realized I like being coached (which is why I liked OTF). I know peloton had a 30 day free trial for the app, so you could try out some of the classes to make sure you like the instructors. I’m sure there are similar trials for some of the other brands/equipment.

Do you have one? I assume you have to find some strong rafters or studs to hook it to? You can drill the anchor into the ceiling. However, I think this would be a good addition to a bigger system. It's an excellent workout with a lot of variations but it's pretty self directed and more helpful if you have someone working with you on your form to make sure you're doing it correctly.

Rower! I love the whole body workout I can get on a rower, and also how gentle it is on my aching joints.

Peloton tread. It will replace your OTF classes.

TBH I think the Peloton tread is super overpriced and a huge commitment, literally and figuratively. If you like OTF, I would recommend a middle of the road treadmill and using the peloton app on a large tablet/ipad. They have bootcamp classes that I think are similar to OTF.

chrispy1122, we have nothing. H has some straps and resistance bands. He was thinking about getting a bench and set of adjustable weights, but he knows that I gravitate towards group fitness like OTF. I also like being coached and lack motivation to just do things myself.

Yeah, if you have a subscription to peloton, you will be able to do all types of indoor and outdoor workouts, in addition to whatever piece of equipment you have. And we can workout together. It’s all about me.

I’m putting in a home gym right now and we’re putting in a TRX. It’s like $150. So if someone is offering a Tonal or a Peloton tread, I would not go the way of a TRX.
Tonal’s are awesome too. I want to put one of those in the gym and it’s a great strength workout in a small amount of space.

brux I’d definitely do a treadmill then, whether peloton or an incline trainer (like what they have at OTF). Even though everyone loves the bike, I really like how I can use the app for run workouts, which have a variety of durations, focuses (intervals, hills, hiit, or just fun runs), walks, and for the running part of boot camps (which is a mix of running, body weight, and light and medium weight strength workouts). You don’t get the rowing like at OTF, but I hated that part anyway.

MH got me a Peloton tread for my birthday, so I say you should choose that as well. 😀

I would probably do a rower, treadmill, or elliptical and plan to use free weights and body weight exercises on an app. Which do you enjoy using the most? Do you think the Peloton app would help motivate you? It’s worth paying more to get equipment/programs you will use.
I ended up getting a mid-priced ProForm elliptical for my birthday. I’ve been doing most of my workouts outside with the dog in the mornings, but I really enjoy using it and it will get daily use this winter and in the future once Bonnie has less puppy energy. It came with iFit, which is definitely...meh. We cancelled the subscription after the first month.
If you want some real motivation to move, I’d recommend getting a young border collie mix that jumps over the furniture like hurdles if she doesn’t get adequate exercise. 😬

I’d get a peloton bike or tread depending on what I preferred to do. I like the bike because I can run outside.

I'd love the Peloton tread. We have the bike and I do love it. If we had the space, I'd get the tread for sure. It's just huge and also fairly high off the ground, so it requires a good deal of ceiling height that we don't have in our 1950s house basement. The Peloton tread also will have the Peloton subscription, which has every kind of fitness supplemental instruction you could want. +1 to this. I don’t have space for the tread but I’d love to get it. I just got the bike, and even though I don’t usually love Spin class, it’s been awesome.

Based on this, I think I should see if we have space for the Peloton tread before I get dreaming about it.
I also want to see if I can use the Peloton subscription on another tread with their monitor.

Peloton bike, duh. But I am a bit Peloton obsessed in general and you can't go wrong with either the bike or tread. The bike just has a much much smaller footprint.
Do you have a weight set? If not, that would be my other suggestion, but they are so hard to come by right now.

We have a non peloton bike and just use it with the app.

I love my Peloton bike so hard. I can't even sing enough praises about it. The community aspect of it is half of why I love it so much. I have this whole group of people that I am sharing my journey with through IG which is crazy but also awesome. And I am very much motivated by badges (which you earn for different things) and competition (against others in your classes AND yourself).
The app has so much more to offer, too. I've used a ton of their yoga, strength, and outdoor running workouts. I had a regular treadmill in my basement that I sold when we got our bike. I can always run outside, but having the bike adds variety to my workouts.

I love my peloton but I don’t think you’d like it if you hate spin, so I agree perhaps the tread is a better option.
I am fascinated by the Tonal ads that I see but it will not be in the budget for a very long time, ha.

I also want to see if I can use the Peloton subscription on another tread with their monitor. I use the app on a tv using a fire stick. It works out better for me for boot camps too because I can see the screen from both the treadmill (the tv is right in front of the treadmill) and where I attempt to do push-ups and weights (off to the side). The app is also only $12.95 a month, so pretty low commitment.

I have a Concept 2 and highly recommend it. It’s such an efficient workout and it’s really easy to take out and fold away. Now that I’m WFH I can jump on for 10 minutes between meetings and tbh, I’ve never been in better shape.
Happy birthday! Hope it’s a great one!

I love my bowflex but is not interactive. It just has so many different options and can target so many different muscles. But I am biased because I really dislike running on a tread or spin bike (indoors in general)...I'd rather just do that outside. What kind of workout do you like best? That should fuel your decision most.

Well, our basement ceiling are 7 feet. So the Peloton tread won't fit down here.

I loathe spinning so the peloton is just not for me. We built a home gym last summer and our Concept 2 rower is my single favorite piece of equipment. It's such a good full body workout in a short time frame. You could easily invest in both a rower and weights for less than a Peloton too.
