brux I never took a spinning class before I got my Peloton bike, and I really do enjoy the classes. You can always start with shorter ones to get into it. You'd be surprised just how quickly you start to crave exercise, which are words I thought I'd never type lol. I love the community aspect of it, the music, the high fives and the motivation from the instructor. I have been to spinning class before and hated every minute of it. Hence my worry.

brux , what didn't you like about the spin classes you took? painful (butt and quads) and also like I didn't know what I was doing. I'm certain that both of those complaints could get better with time, but I'm nervous to spend all that money when I know I like rowing and walking but I'm meh on bikes. I also bike outdoors every day to bring my kid to camp and I only like flat road. Hills, I want to quit and walk my bike bc I'm a wimp.

Even the not liking hills- as you get stronger, what constitutes a “hill” on the bike will change. The community is awesome and there are so many options for class types, music, instructors, etc. I feel like there really is something for everyone! But... I am still in the “get a rower” camp. Whichever one has the most interactive/ best community and classes for you. Which one has been around the longest/has the biggest community? Or... since the peloton tread is on the table, you could get a rower AND the bike for about the same price...

Peloton bike community is the biggest and best content by far from what I can tell. But if I had to rank everything, the bike would be #4 after a rower, tread and Tonal. But none of those have as good of a community from what I can tell.

The reviews of the Peloton treads are off the charts and even Consumer Reports says its the best by far. I hate biking so I would do that. I enjoyed the Peloton app and classes when I had their free 90 day membership at the beginning of COVID. I am still hoping and praying i can get back to OTF someday.

brux , If you get a cheaper treadmill and pair it with a Peloton app for the community (and then you get all the other types of classes too), can you get the Tonal too? ETA: The Peloton community in general seems really strong. There are a lot of bikers, but you can have the community without biking, from what I can tell (others who have done it more than a day can correct me lol). thats what I’m noodling about. I still want a tread with a giant screen Bc it’s hard to think about my tiny iPad Instead. First world problems, but still a problem bc I have to figure out my true priorities.

Because when it’s safe to go back to OTF you might want to mix and match some times. Pre COVID I still did drop in classes for Core Power even thought I had everything I needed to work out at home. Because sometimes you just want a live classes outside of your house.

Get the tread. You love the tread. You found a space for the tread. You get the community you want. It replaces what you’ve been doing at OTF. It’s your 40th, you didn’t take the trip or have a party, you deserve this goddamn tread.

If you got the peloton tread, would you have a good spot for it? Not just someplace it fits, but a place that fees like a workout space? If not, do you love it enough to be motivated to use it even if it’s shoved in a back room somewhere or in a room that you already use mostly for relaxing? What do you love most about the tread? I echo what maybe said- it is an awesome tread and consistently rates well by all metrics except price, so I don’t know what was up with those people and their extended warranty talk.

Start with that and see if you still have a need for a tonal after that.

I like the huge screen and class selection/participation the most.

What I would probably do:
Hydrow with their subscription for straight up rowing workouts. Basic set of inexpensive boot camp weights, plus a workout mat and any other boot camp type accessories you need/want. Peloton app on a larger screen that is now mounted in your dedicated rowing/workout space. Peloton app for boot camp, but use the rower during the tread components. Keep your dedicated wine and tv space.

Before you make your final decision, I want to run a few options by you: How about the hip-swingin' action of this piece? Or, the yee-haw ride 'em cowboy movement of this one? But honestly, what's better than couples' gliding?

Is there enough space to do the floor/strength component nearby? there is. I learned that I can mirror the peloton screen to our tv and then there’s a lot of space to workout. The tv room is where H has been working out during the day too, so it’s not too odd. But I tend to workout at night, so I’d have to talk to H about him moving his evening hangout to the less comfy basement.

coffee I think with the app only (and not a machine), that I lose some features to peloton, like leaderboard? I do like watching other people’s effort at OTF to benchmark myself like a creeper. But I like your plan. I need to make a spreadsheet of options and prices to see if H has strong feelings one way or another.

You do lose the metrics and leader board if you have just the app. It looks like the Hydrow has a leaderboard as well, but that wouldn’t be useful during boot camps. Haha sorry. I should get out of this thread. I’m like 75% convinced that my “gym” now needs a rower...

If I go a rower, the current contender is a WaterRower with a CityRow app. Or maybe just the CityRow branded one. It’s cheaper than Hydro and more OTF like than Hydrow.
