Not sure about spelling. If they do, it will likely just be some of the high frequency words or short rhyming words.

I haven’t hear anything about spelling yet. I wouldn’t be surprised if they start that at some point this year, maybe 2nd half. nam2013 kids get a list of words they have to learn to spell and then they get tested on them. The list is usually like 10 words.

Josie has snap words. It’s a list of the more frequent words they add to their writing. They started doing them last year, and I know will be continuing with it this year, but it’s not the traditional write the words five times, write them in a sentence, and then take a quiz on them

H’s teachers have just encouraged sounding out words and writing the words how they sound. She writes some interesting things but mostly we can figure out what she means.

But phonetic writing is spelling too, for me spelling is a part of language, wetter ‘correct’ or incorrect kwim?

Well drop off line was crazy long but the teachers got through it quickly. Once you pull up to a spot a teacher opens the kid(s) door and takes their temp. If it’s good they give them a colored bracelet. The bracelet color changes each day. L will tell me what the rest of the day is like when he gets home. He’s very good at telling me about how much or not so much of wearing his masks.

We got info about this week on M’s last hybrid day saying that they start spelling tests this week. They have about 10 three letter words.

He likes to write, so this should be good for him. If he does t have specific spelling homework, I will have him write them in a notebook for practice.

I wish T had spelling. DS1 did then when DD got to first grade they got rid of it. DD is super smart but not a great speller.

I remember spelling lists starting in earnest in 2nd grade but maybe we did it in first, too, I can't recall. It hasn't been introduced this year...so far they've been working on learning "the better alphabet" which leads into phonics, which makes me happy.
I found out today there are 14 kids in B's physical class, with 8 distance learners, so a total of 22. Classes are capped at 18 in FL for elementary so when they have to go over that # they add a 2nd teacher. B had 21 in his K class so I am completely fine with 22 and 2 teachers.

M has said the past two days that he wants school to be like Ms. M’s - his K - class. This year it’s a lot of “paperwork”. Lol. I think they are doing worksheets and whatnot mostly.
I told him that school is this way now because of the virus. They can’t do group activities and all the fun things they did last year because they have to try to social distance. This is what I think is happening and I hope it’s not just this particular teacher’s style. It’s sad that even though he likes being in school physically, it’s changed enough for him to not like it as much as he once did.

Any chance they’re working on ‘review’ stuff now and not introducing a ton of new material yet? I could see using worksheets for that. Hopefully you’ll see a shift as the school year progresses! 🤞🏻

lahdeedah, i’ve noticed this too. Josie hasn’t seem to recognize it yet but there isn’t a lot of the centers work that is a big part of first grade because they cannot share materials. It’s hard to watch them just sit all the time. I know they get up a lot to do even a quick 10 minute recess outside but it’s not the same as the busy-ness I saw in the school last year.

Yeah this is one of my biggest concerns is that so much of learning at the early stages is collaborative and in things like centers. It is so hard to teach/learn like this. One of my friends who is an elementary teacher is really struggling. She says in 25 years of teaching, she's literally never just stood at the front of the class and taught. She has to figure out a new way to do literally everything she does.

Yes exactly this. His K class was filled with activity based stuff. They weren’t sitting all the time like they do now I think. He doesn’t love that. I hope they find a way to do some of that stuff. They are all in masks all day, so I wouldn’t mind them doing a little of that.

So at story time for instance, since they can’t gather for circle time on the carpet, the kids stay at their desks and she walks around with the book up and down the aisles while she reads it with her mask on. She said it’s challenging!

that's interesting lfig. My friend is having such a different experience. She is teaching her in person class at the same time as the remote kids so she has to stay in front of her computer all day. Like she literally can't move!

Like she literally can't move! That’s Josie’s teacher. And when she does walk around to check understanding and help the kids at their desks, Josie just sits there—and it can take a while. From our side of the coin, it’s super frustrating. I’ve stated to just let her leave to go play or I leave a book with her at the desk so she has something to keep her occupied.

In B's class they can take off masks when they're seated at their desks (they have desk shields) but when they're up and moving around the classroom they put the masks on. They do story/circle time on the floor, I do know that.
They still go to the various rooms/buildings for resources--art, library, etc. Music is a bit different b/c many of the instruments are off-limits, but B said they ordered *something* so all the kids will have individual instruments to play. I hope it's not a recorder!

The kids eat lunch at their desks now and have plexiglass shield around them. We got an email yesterday that lunch is now going to be silent because of the reports of positive results correlating with people going to restaurants (indoors or out). I get it but damn!

jewels, at my sisters school the DLers are getting the same work...just not necessarily the same instruction. The kids in school go until 11:30, then released. Then the few DLers get time with the teacher through the computer for and hour or so. Then the afternoon the in school kids who were released at 11:30 all sign on for more instruction via google classroom. It's...strange. My sister hates it. Says it feels like she has so many "jobs". Because then in addition to that she has 4 kids of her own that she has to stay on top of and make sure they are doing their work.

OMG...like no talking silent? That is just nuts. Lunch time should be a bit of a break/release for them. I hate it for the kids. Like you...I get it...But damn!
