Push-up challenge done. 44! Previous record was 40. Thirst trap for my shoulders and also my adorable demon child (PDQ):

That actually does raise an interesting question, of which I'm interested in other perspectives. How do you tell, within yourself, when you truly need rest and when you are just not doing what you need to? I pretty much rest on Sundays just because that's our busiest day of the week. I'll move a rest day on a calendar if needed, if the rest day doesn't fall on Sunday.

Ab day: Shaun week 25 Abs and Insanity Fast and Furious Abs.
So we have a couple we are friends with that ride bikes and lift. My husband wants to start riding and they have invited us over to lift. I'm curious as I've never used anything other than dumbbells.

I’m so excited!!! I just got challenged to do a chin up on the playground by my son and you guys!! I actually did them! I’ve never ever been remotely strong enough and I did three chin ups and one pull up! Nice job! I hope he was impressed! ETA: Awesome on the pushups too, your daughter is adorable.

I have the same sentiment. For me, my food/diet is for weight loss and exercise is for mental health. After years of slogging through workouts I hated, I finally realized that there is activity I truly love and look forward to (spinning and weightlifting mostly). I never force myself to do things I don't like anymore. It is just not worth it. I also don't workout so that I can eat more, I consider the two to be two completely separate things. With that regard, I don't punish myself by eating less on days I don't work out. We are all in this life for the long-haul, so one day off doesn't matter one bit in the long run. However, never taking a day off can lead to injury, burn out, exhaustion, and I want to avoid that at all costs. Separating food and working out has been a complete game changer for me, mentally. I mean there are still some days where I am like, I will do an extra 20 minutes on the bike so I feel better about having that beer later, or whatever. But in general I keep them in separate compartments in my mind. I don’t punish myself for having a treat on a day I don’t work out, and relieving that guilt that I did carry with me in my early 20s has been great. Yes, it's taken me most of the past year to get here, but it has made such a difference in my mental health to have this mindset.

30 minute HIIT and hills with Robin 30 minute barre 3 class 10 minute core with Olivia
I liked the barre class. I’ll keep checking them out. Hoping to get up before work to squeeze in a bootcamp.

Today was a bike day. I did two short rides while the toddler napped. I didn't eat enough calories early on in my day, and ended up snacking a lot this afternoon. It's hard now that I'm working because I just grab yogurt or a protein bar to eat on my drive at 7, and then don't eat lunch until 1. We can't eat in the classroom , so I need to think ahead about eating a heartier breakfast and/or bringing a snack for the drive home to prevent those empty calories later on.

Arm day done. I decided to add some hot honey and red pepper flakes to my avocado toast today and it was 🤤. 10/10 recommend!
Tomorrow is an early morning leg day. I prepped my meals for the weekend and made some behemoth chicken burrito bowl that has 70g of protein 😳 so that should get me through a 12 hour shift!

I was feeling bored and restless last night so I hopped on the bike and did Cody's two rides from yesterday. 30 min intervals and arms and 20 min pop ride. He had pink hair for both and by the end his fingers were nice and pink too. His rides always put me in such a good mood though, I just love him.
This morning I only had time for a 20min upper body strength with Robin. I do hope to get in another short ride at some point today because then tomorrow will be ride #300! I am hoping to join a few of you for the live ride with Alex tomorrow.

Also, I think I might be the only person who doesn't like avocado toast. It always sounds good, but then I try to eat it and it's just not for me.

I did a chest& back and an abs class using the Peloton app yesterday, and a self-guided 6k outdoor interval run today. It felt good but challenging, but that was apparently because it was my quickest overall pace ever except for a 2k run, so I’ll take it. Food should be good today. It’s a long weekend here so I expect food over the weekend will not be fantastic, but I’ll try to not go overboard.

The peach I just had with my lunch was perfect. So, so good. 🍑 I kept buying peaches from the grocery store and trying to ripen them, but they just went from hard to overripe without ever being perfect. I was ready to just give up on peaches, but H bought some from a fruit stand and they were so good. Guess I know what I need to do. Yeah...make some cobbler. #sorrynotsorry

Thanks guys! Today is my rest day. Slept in and started getting my shit together for the weekend. I'm going camping up north alone until Sunday. Tackling a 16 mile run first thing tomorrow morning and then spending the rest of the weekend recovering in some natural pools and journaling in the hammock. B: cheerios with milk, banana and raisins S: onebar L: pineapple, banana mint smoothie and a PB energy ball D: pasta with goat cheese, chicken, mushrooms, basil and tomatoes. probably some sort of cookie or sweet treat

That actually does raise an interesting question, of which I'm interested in other perspectives. How do you tell, within yourself, when you truly need rest and when you are just not doing what you need to? I'll echo the "stop after 5 minutes if you're hating it" mantra as one of the things I use. As cliche as it sounds, I think it really is just listening to your body. And that goes both ways - where I don't take a rest day just to take one unless I'm really sore, not feeling well, etc. For me, of late, active recovery with a fun walk or stretching helps me more than not doing anything. Obviously, everyone is different and some people absolutely need rest and nothing but rest days for their fitness goals, but the bottom line is if you're working out more because you feel like you HAVE to vs WANT to, then it's probably time for a rest day or a very low-intensity active recovery day. I'm also making this more of a habit/lifestyle so incorporating a little something everyday - usually I do 20 minutes of some kind of Peleton workout (or double up 2 10-minute ones) every day. It's actually something I look forward to and maybe this effing pandemic has reshaped the way I've looked at exercise because pre-pandemic I typically didn't say, "Yay, I get to workout today." But now? It's time for me and me only to take care of myself and just get a little escape from what's going on around us. Also, as I've seen my mom recover from an injury and dealing with that cruel asshole we all know as time and the toll it takes on one's body, I appreciate so much more of what I can do and what I am still capable of and I want to keep moving as much as I can for as long as I can. And in order to do that, I need to take care of my body, which means, rest and active recovery.

Speaking of active recovery, I opted to do a Fun Walk vs my next scheduled run. Today was a tough week at work and I was sore from the last few strength workouts and I just wanted to have some fun.
It was a repeat of Robin's 20 min 90s Fun Walk (for outdoors) and yes, I was feeling myself as I strutted along to "Everybody Dance Now (Sweat)." I turned some of the brisk intervals into slow jogs per her suggestion because I felt like it but kept it nice and easy the entire time.
Also, there's been a very welcome break in the insanely hot temps so it was low 60s and just so nice to be out in the breeze and not sweat within 60 seconds of starting.
I also picked up my Pelethon Week 3 badge.
Happy Friday, all!

calendula tell me about this push up challenge! You look strong AF. Thank you!! Just a silly goal my coach and I have been setting to see how many I can do. He programs a lot of upper body work and every third Thursday I do a challenge to see if I've improved. Its fun to see the progress and know I'm getting stronger (my weight has been the same for months). I started at 30 reps in June.

The first set will be a warm up set of elevated pushups (last night was 10), the second set is a small number on the ground nice and slow (last night 8) and then the last set is the test, as many as possible quickly and continuously with good form. 55 is awesome! That's a lot, even broken into sets!

Try to mix it up with elbows in and out, faster and slower tempos. Taylor Swift plays the whole time. 😉
