Pompeo's out there saying Soleimani was actively involved in/planning something against the US. Probably trying to quell stuff I've been seeing on twitter that this was in a very grey area, international law-wise.
Apparently the US embassy in Iraq just told all Americans to GTFO as fast as they can.

Glad someone is saying this. This strike is tactically good, strategically disastrous

Glad someone is saying this. This strike is tactically good, strategically disastrous Exactly. Whether he posed a threat to US interests or not, I'd like some indication that some consideration was given to the repercussions. That someone thought at least a few chess moves ahead. I'll hold my breath.

I am extremely worried about all of this. My cousin and SIL are supposed to be deploying to the Middle East this month too.

Happy New Year everyone. Pompeo was on CNN yesterday just making an ass of himself. You can tell when he is caught. He pauses and the says whoever made the statement preceeeding is "just wrong." Then long pause. He is a terrible diplomat. He needs to be out.
In this instance he just said that France was wrong for telling us that the US over stepped a line.
I am nervous it starts a draft. I am still a valid draftee.

The more I am reading about this, the more I am getting that this is so so bad. There needs to be a "explain this to me like I am 5" out there for the general public, because they are not seeing this right now.

Thank you for starting the thread dc2london. At the very least, maybe we can help each other to get more knowledgeable about our long and very complicated history with Iran.

I am extremely worried about all of this. My cousin and SIL are supposed to be deploying to the Middle East this month too. I'm so sorry. That has to be scary. Civilians on US soil will most likely be safe, but Americans in the whole ME region are at risk, and of course we will be sending troops into Iraq now

Yeah it's way past my pay grade too FWIW, I will be looking to the Rational Security and Pod Save the World podcasts for more information. Tamara Kauffman-Wittes , Shane Harris and Tommy Vietor are good at explaining things without making you want to dive into a bunker

I am surprised they didn’t order the evacuation when the protest at the embassy happened.

There are many downsides to this crew doing all of this but the biggest one for me is that I won’t trust a word emanating from any US official and I will wonder what is being hidden from us. We just learned the extent to which we have been lied to about Afghanistan all along. I can’t even imagine what we will do here in an entirely self-created crisis.

I don't want to get into the politics side. We live in a military town and I just know that the troops are on the way. I have been hearing planes flying out all last night and this morning. We have a good friend just waiting for his probable orders. God bless the troops and their families. ♥️

I think Nancy needs to pray a little harder for Trump- he clearly is not thinking straight.

Based on what I've seen on Twitter, it sounds like Republican brass will fall in line with Trump, as per. I am so fucking disappointed, but not surprised.
Prove me wrong, people.

I'm seeing a lot of people freaking out about our safety here and starting a war zone in the USA and I feel like they don't understand how this works. Of course we are always at risk of a terrorist attack but correct me if I'm wrong in thinking that our systems of attack are much more sophisticated than theirs and the likelihood of battlefronts in the US is ....very small. Correct?

Americans in that region and our troops are the ones most at risk aside from ME civilians as well, but it seems like a lot of people on my newsfeed are freaking out about having to get into a bomb shelter immediately or something. I am not trying to downplay the incredible seriousness, of course. This is absolutely horrendous and I'm feeling very much as I did in 2002.

I'm worried about our people (and facilities) in Qatar. And I'm worried about the election.

I saw it referenced last night but can't remember, I think it was Eric.
