ambiguousmango we do time and place restrictions on speech (other than slurs which are always inappropriate). So rather than say "you can't say fuck" it's more like "fuck is a word that can make people uncomfortable, so while it's fine to say in the house, it's not okay to say in public, or in front of your grandparents, etc." And we have a no- name calling rule for similar reasons - we don't use words to hurt other people. So far we've had success with our 8 year old. The 4 year old has the same rules, but doesn't seem interested in using curse words.

piratecat have you tried "one more scream to get it out of your system and then no more. Make it the biggest, loudest scream you've got." Sometimes it's enough to have them acknowledge it if they're just doing it for fun.

I send one outfit. So she gets one "accident" pair of clothes. Then they resort to school clothes which come from god knows where. So it's an exciting gamble of what outfit will i get next. She doesn't do this at home because after the first time I'd tell her the next time she'd have to stay in her pee clothes (I'm not a monster, it wouldn't be all day, just like a few minutes to emphasize we don't pee in our clothes for funsies. I obviously don't want pee clothes around the house/furniture). they obviously cannot take that approach at school. Yowza. Do the teachers have any ideas? Are there any clothes she doesn't particularly like that you can send it more of to take away the element of excitement of random new-to-her clothes? They think she's doing it for attention. She's also eating wood chips again despite her iron levels being within normal range and us continuing the iron. So she's finally been observed by the school therapist (this isn't exactly what she is but MH and I can never remember her real title). The therapist yesterday called to say that she'll be taking DD into smaller sessions to figure out if her behaviors are sensory, attention seeking, or anxiety driven. Once that's figured out we'll develop a plan on how to proceed. So hopefully this will be addressed there. Because other than talking about it and trying to work within DD's small currency window, I don't really know what to do if I"m not there.

I am feeling like a shit mom right now. My ds has started dropping f-bombs. I am sure he picked it up from me or my H. We don't normally curse but we have slipped up in the car recently. Any advice on what to do? Right now I am trying not to make a big deal about it so he doesn't latch onto it but I'm not sure if that is the best approach. I completely ignore it. If it's applicable I'll correct to a different but similarly sounding word. Like I'm correcting her mispronunciation normally. DD's vocabulary is fucking crazy and she picks up on words instantly. But she's very much into saying things correctly. I have this habit from when she was little of repeating what she said back to her so I can confirm that's what she said. So if I ignore or correct her then she knows that it's not right.

How do you get your kids to stop screaming? We used to tell him to scream quietly like a mouse and that worked really well for a while but he's really amping it up lately. And he's not usually screaming because he's upset, just riled up and for fun. Let me know what works. Dd has been LOUD this week. Happy loud. Mad loud. Just so much shrieking. I will be trying some of the suggestions given up thread. I like the one more scream option since thatβs how we do a lot of transition warnings. Hopefully that will help because poor ds has complained multiple times that βdd hurts my earsβ.

One time when DD was screaming high pitched ear piercing bloody murder during bath time and I was tired and triggered (screaming is a HUGE anxiety trigger for me) I told her if she screamed like that one more time I was going to scream back. Well she did and then I did. And wouldn't you know she didn't like that one bit. Scared the pants off of her. I said "now you know how Mommy feels when you scream like that. Everytime you scream I'm going to scream too. Are you going to scream again?" She shook her head no and the screaming stopped for a long time. Every once in a while I have to remind her with a warning and it's only been a couple times where I've had to scream back.
The neighbors love us obviously.

Happy Halloween! What's everyone doing tonight (or did already or doing this weekend?) and what are your kiddos dressed as? We're going to a Halloween party and then Trick-or-treating with some of the second grade families. My son isn't even super close to the kids, but I like the parents ;-) He's dressed as Draco Malfoy. The little guy is going to be Lobo from Super Monsters.

Happy Halloween! What's everyone doing tonight (or did already or doing this weekend?) and what are your kiddos dressed as? I am Halloweenβd out. Mhβs aunt threw her annual party last weekend which is always a blast. Yesterday was dsβ pre-k party. Tonight was neighborhood trick or treating. We just go up and down one block. Our immediate block does a little block party. They grill and have snacks but the best part is we can just throw our candy on the table and not have to stay at our house. It was nice that the rain held off. Ds is a bat. Dd a bumble bee. Iβm a raven. And mh is a spotted lantern fly.

Spotted lantern fly? So specific! Ug. Yeah. Itβs an invasive species that hit our area this summer/fall. Theyβre really bad for certain trees and crops (like hops, save the beer!). Thereβs an app that keeps track of how many you squish too. Ds helps me squish them at the playground.

We didn't end up going to the Halloween parade because of the weather so that was kind of a bummer. The kids also didn't get to go to the assisted living community to ToT. We did go to the Children's Museum for a bit then an event at a brewery where we got to see a porcupine, owls, turtle, and a snake. We also won best group costume and won a gift card to the brewery.

We did round 1 of TOTing last night. It got rainy and windy at one point but we powered through for a few more houses until DD said she was done. Then there was an epic meltdown when it was time to get her to bed. She obviously needed the sleep because she was still asleep when I was leaving for work.

I took N to a daytime party at the neighborhood club, then epic nap fail time, then we went to another halloween party on campus through the family resource center, and then we went home to wait for DH to get home from work. We ended up playing around in the snow, he loved just rolling around in it and every time I tried to make a snowman ball, he would just step on it and destroy it, LOL. Then we went down to a specific set of streets that go all out and close the street to traffic and did some ToT until I had to leave for an emergency dentist appointment (ugh) and he was so confused at first but then he LOVED it.
It was so funny - I was like's go get some candy. And he was like No. I'm like come on, candy! And he just gives me a look like "what are you talking about lady" so then I said "blue?" (he calls m&ms blues) and he was like YES!! and then understood and apparently he loves swedish fish LOL. what a little weirdo.
he was elmo
