tgrimes that does sound serious! But I do like them teaching kids music at school. I can’t play any instrument & can’t read notes, for the life of me (I did ballet, theatre & choir).

You didn't have to read music for choir? Nope, I was around 10 when I stopped maybe that has something to do with it? My music and drama teachers tried to teach me (without luck) in high school.

tgrimes, piano/keyboard is a good start for any instrument later in life. Like learn the basics on piano and then move up to other instruments. Several of the violin lessons I've looked at here start with piano first. Cadence is so into the idea of playing violin that when her dance teacher handed out rhythm sticks to the class yesterday, she propped one under her chin and used the other as a bow.

Some of the other more aggressive moms were talking about getting their kid to play an obscure instrument. That way they have a better chance to get into other music magnet schools in the district for middle school and high school. I don't have it in me to decide that right now...

We have to sign kids in to before care. I was hoping i could drop at the door, but I will have to park, get a baby and N out, take him in, and then load back up. And then get n and the baby out at the baby's daycare, and then again get N out at her school. I will never actually arrive at work.

Ouch, cagoldi. Poor X. I hope tomorrow is a better day. We can hang around the fence to the k-1 playground they go in at 825. I got the impression it’s a hard no to walk them in to their classrooms. As for bus pick up, we had to sign a paper stating we’d (or whichever adult you appoint) be at the bus stop or the won’t let the kid off the bus. It was for k-3 parents.

We went to the Hands on Museum this morning with friends which was fun. A is into everything and not really walking other than a few steps here and there, so my easiest kid has turned into a typical toddler handful while out. I'll take it though, I love seeing him on the move.

We walk them to the door and the kindergarten teachers are there waiting. For pick up we sign in in the cafeteria and then wait for them to be brought to us. If you're picking up, you have to send a note in the morning or they automatically put them on the bus.

Our parents are allowed to go to the cafeteria and to the music department because it's a music magnet school and most kids have to carry their instruments every day. After tomorrow, they can't linger in the cafeteria though. Does M get to choose instrument in K? That’s really awesome!

mwhip , that is the rule at our school too, but they are allowed into the cafeteria area in the mornings for drop off, but that's as far as they are allowed to go without a badge. We can't go to the cafeteria even. You can walk them to the door and that's it. There are schools in my district that had this policy on the first day as well. I know a couple moms whose kids went to a different elementary school that were quite upset they couldn't walk their kid to their classroom on the first day. I can walk him to the cafeteria but that’s it, they had always been letting me go in and sit with him but today is the last day they’re going to let me helicopter. It seriously never occurred to me to do anything different until this morning when I was like, I’m the only one here... Everyone else was helicoptering on the playground and in the lines, apparently. It’s cool. We both need that push to remind us he’s ready to be more independent.

I am thinking I could just walk Dude and X to the gate and let one of X’s aides take him to class eventually, but that is a long way off based on this morning.
I forgot to tell you, I think, but the other day my heart exploded when I heard Dude explaining to Pipsqueak that he would introduce him to his brother, and his brother “needs a helper at school because he has a special brain and special heart.”

Are you all saying parents are going into the schools, to drop off their kids? Is that allowed? It was only allowed at Evie's school the first day. After that, to go into the school, you have to stop at the office and get a visitors pass. I think the doors lock from the outside so not just anyone can get in without a school official at the door. That’s what was happening at our school: the parents were walking kids in, getting visitors passes, then walking the kids to the class.

My kid’s school is like a fortress, we are lucky the kids are able to get inside. We are only bused to middle school. It annoyed the heck out of me that there were 3 moms who stood on DS’s stop before and after school every single day last year. The kids need that independence by that age.

I....was smoking at the bus stop in middle school. Lol. At that age, you don't need a chaperone, unless you're in a really shitty part of town. Or, your parents are doing it as punishment.

Yes, the singing thing would have me a little... put off. Plus, what happens to the kids who don't have a parent drop them off? For instance 2 days per week, I will have a babysitter drop my kid off. I don't think she would want to stand in a circle and sing with him! I am also hysterical at the thought of my husband doing this. Plus usually when I sing (granted it's usually loudly and obnoxiously for the sole purpose of annoying my kids... anyone else do this? Just me?) anyway, usually when I sing, my kids scream at me to stop, so not sure how well that would go over in that setting! You are not alone. M always yells at me to stop singing. M2 will try to sing along with me. Me and that kid will have fun times.😂

How cool! Does C has any interest in a specific instrument yet? I already told M she can't do strings because a parent has to be there for their private lesson every week as well as have their own lesson to instruct the child when practicing at home. They're all during work hours so I can't do that. It's serious business. She knows I used to play the piano and is interested in that but she doesn't have to decide for another year or two. M would love a music magnet school! His is an arts integrated school and he loves art, but he would love music more.

I'm hoping I get a briefing on what it entails before I commit.. lol I think you are a very organized person, so you would be good at it. At our school last school they kept up and communicated with who volunteered to do what with the parties/surprise readers/teacher luncheons/school wide fundraisers/teacher gifts-appreciation. It may be different where you are, though.
