Guys Two is hard. I know I know, Three and Four will be worse. So many tantrums though. And he's been sleeping like shit and threw the most intense 2-hour long tantrum in the middle of the night - H asked me if we needed to call the doctor. I guess 2-year sleep regression is a thing and he's had a cold and he's got his canines coming in (he's been such a champ with his other teeth though) but my gosh. He also switched to full time daycare from 3 days/week recently and my H has been out of town a lot so maybe all of that is throwing him off but MY GOSH. Just the usual run-of-the-mill tantrums this morning and then he was completely fine and off to daycare he went. I'm sure he'll be delightful there. We are going on vacation next week with H's entire family and staying in a tiny cottage where we will sleep in the loft that's open to the main area below and it's going to be a nightmare.

piratecat , we transfer her to the pack n play asleep. I only had to do CIO with my oldest for a few nights and that worked so I'm not as familiar with any other technique. I haven't used them either so I only know of the general concepts but they are gentler/more gradual options. With Ferber you check in on them periodically with longer and longer stretches of time in between checks - I think that works for some kids but makes things worse for others. Sleep lady shuffle starts out with you in the room and you move further and further away until you're out of the room. There may be other methods that might work better for your kid. What does your bedtime routine/schedule look like? Does she nurse/get a bottle to fall asleep? What if you go through the bedtime routine in your room (assuming that's where you typically do it) and then put her in her PnP in her room? Or vice versa do the bedtime routine in her room, put her in the PnP in your room until she gets used to the routine being in her room, then do the routine and put her in the PnP in her room, then the crib? How long will she cry for?

piratecat, I think she would cry forever. After 5 minutes I can't handle it but she isn't slowing down after that long. I probably need to work on a better bedtime routine. My oldest is still pretty hard to put to sleep (likes to cuddle for long periods of time) so DD2 has kind of always been on the back burner for night time routines. She doesn't get anything after dinner so a bottle or milk doesn't signal sleep for her. She kind of just falls asleep when we are dealing with DD1 currently.

sarahh I havenโt done what you are doing. But have you listened to the precious little sleep podcast ? Anytime I was having trouble Iโd find something there. I found it really helpful because they explained baby sleep patterns being different than ours and how to help change things gradually. My DD is basically stopped drinking milk the last five days because I took away the nuk soft nipple sippy cups. Sheโs 22 months, Iโve replaced them with Tommy tippy cup She CAN drink out of them she will down an entire cup of milk before bed in them. She will ask for milk all day I hand her the Tommy tippy cup and she throws a fit. How long will this last ? I don't know how long but I would just keep at it. Does she like cheese or yogurt? She doesn't NEED to drink milk but if she wants it she will eventually drink from the cup. Precious Little Sleep book is what I used for sleep training and it has worked well for us... until recently.

sarahh, yea it's hard enough figuring out sleep stuff for one kid, it's gotta be tough with two. I do think a consistent bedtime routine and schedule for your toddler will be the first step. And it doesn't have to be a long time-consuming thing, just something you do every night as close to the same time as possible. How old is your oldest? What time do they go to sleep? Could you come up with a system where you go through your bedtime routine with both of them together, have the oldest wait for you for 5-10 minutes while you put your toddler down (maybe read one more book with her in the room she'll be sleeping/sing songs/whatever), and then come back and finish with her? This is a book I saw recommended for older kids with bedtime separation anxiety. My SIL has similar issue with her 5YO who has always needed someone to lay with him to fall asleep and I know they are gradually working on leaving the room while he's almost asleep but not quite so that eventually he can fall asleep on his own all the way.

piratecat, my oldest will be 4 next month. I will definitely check out that book! I think that's her issue - separation anxiety. We even tried moving her pack n play in DD1's room because we thought she just needed to be with someone else and she still lost it.

BTDT moms - I need help moving my 18 mo old to her own room. She has been in a bassinet and now pack n play in our room since birth. We have tried moving her after she falls asleep and she usually startles awake. We have also tried starting her out in her room and letting her CIO but she gets so upset that she's almost hyperventilating. The only thing that has worked twice is DH has to get in the crib with her (he's 6'6" so this is not ideal) and wait for her to fall asleep and then sneak out of her room. Once she is asleep she will stay in there all night but it's the getting her to fall asleep thing that is the issue. We are due with our 3rd in early November and also will be moving to a new house around that time and we really need her out of our room before both of those things happen! When you let her CIO, were you going back in at different time intervals to check on her? Does she currently put herself to sleep in the pack n play? One option, if she doesn't do well with interval checks, is to stay in the room with her until she falls asleep. Put a chair next to the crib and sit next to it until she's asleep. Don't pick her up, don't chat with her, don't pat her back, etc. If she stands up or cries, tell her its night night time, pat the mattress and tell her to lie down. You stay in there for as long as it takes for her to go to asleep. In 3-4 days, move the chair closer to the door and do the exact same thing. You continue doing this until you're out of the room. You can still tell her its night night time and to lie down without going in there. Both of my kids used a glow worm. Do you have anything like that?

She eventually just stopped drinking milk. As long as she is getting cheese, yogurt, etc she doesn't really need the milk. Do you have any other sippy cups that she could try? I could have opened a store with all of the different brands/types of sippy cups I had bought. Will she drink out of a straw?

tgrimes, it sounds like sitting in the room and gradually moving to the door will work better for DD2 than CIO. She doesn't currently put herself to sleep in the pack n play. We transfer her into it when she is asleep. We don't have a glow worm. We have the fishtank thing that hooks to the crib which DD1 liked, but DD2 doesn't even pay attention to it.

So she'll need to learn how to fall asleep on her own. I'd recommend a glow worm or I think now they have those seahorses that glow and play music. I like the glow worm because they can turn it on & off easier and the music can last up to 10 min. I never had to sit in the room with either of mine. I'd just turn the glow worm on and walk out after our bedtime routine. If they were still crying in 10 min, I'd go back in, turn it on and tell them to go to sleep. My oldest was...difficult. I'd have to go in her room a few times. With my youngest it was rare that I ever had to go back in. You might find with a glow worm or something similar, you could leave the room. If you decide to stay in the room, just make sure you're not doing anything to create a bad habit. Like always patting their back until they fall asleep, etc because you don't want to have to do that every night.

DD hit 28lbs over the weekend! ๐๐๐ Just two more lbs before we can turn her. Which can't come soon enough because we had another car puke incident on the way to the park yesterday. This is the hard part with the newer laws requiring 2 years AND 30 lbs. **knock on wood** we don't have a car sick issue with DS1 but he'll be 3 in September and he's only 26 lbs. DS2 is 9 months and 20 lbs so at this rate I'll be turning them both around at the same time. Good luck getting those last 2 pounds out of the way quickly.

So I am probably not helping. Yes she eats dairy. Itโs just like when switch off of bottles. She drank less for 2 weeks and then she got used to it. I guess I just needed to say it (type it ?) out loud. This open cup business is banana. She is not ready Have you tried straw cups?

Have you tried straw cups? Yes. She only will drink water from them. And She does great with the 360 cup. Only with water though. I havenโt really pushed it with those ones. Maybe I should ? Interesting. Maybe she would like a new/special straw cup just for milk?

I have no sleep advice. DD is a sleep training failure. But I do have sympathy hugs and hair pats and alcohol in my no sleep corner.

Daytime tantrums are bad enough but manageable - MOTN tantrum is next level. WTF why do they forget things they've already learned and figured out?

Could you just switch to a different cup that doesn't have the soft spout?

What about moving the PNP to her room? We had this issue with DS1. We had to do full extinction and hold the door shut while he tried to escape. He eventually would give up. We had to tell ourselves he is safe in the room. He threw up once or twice, we cleaned him up, and went back to business. The gradual methods just wouldnโt work for him. He started it around the time he hit age 2. He was always in his own room, but itโs a phase kids go through.
