jewels Ya...Winnipeg is not a desirable location, the city itself it ok, but there's not much happening in that province. MH grew up about 4 hours northwest of there and he goes back, never.

One of the reasons we moved closer to my parents is because my dad told me he wanted to be close to C like he was with his grandpa. He didn't do much to make that relationship happen until C got older and more self sufficient- so maybe the past year or so. Now he will pick him up and they will go for donuts, fishing, run errands together maybe once a month. It is nice and I love that they are close. Although they are similar personality wise and can clash at times.

jewels that's awesome your dad is up for doing that! I bet they will have fun. I'm hopeful for the day when my dad will offer to take j places.. not holding my breath though. I don't see my FIL doing it either. One, distance but two, he's just not the type. I think he was a very hands-on dad but oddly I don't see that as a grandparent. My dad is really good about taking B out to do stuff and I know C will be added to the mix when she's a touch older. He says he has very good memories of spending time with his own granddad and wants his grandkids to have that, too. I have a lot of thoughts about this since we saw it with my delightful grandmother. She definitely wanted that warm/close relationship as she aged, but she hadn't done much in the early years to build those feelings. I think a lot of grandparents (not speaking to your dad specifically, just in general) they have this idea that they'll do it when the kids are older/more self-sufficient. It's a shame because a) we aren't guaranteed anything time-wise, and b) I really think with kids, you have to make deposits early so you can make withdrawals later. The chance of an older kid or teen wanting to spend time with a grandparent when there's no history there is not as likely as if you'd been spending time with them all along, if that makes sense. Maybe if you said something like that to your dad, it would penetrate. I think my dad is similar to tallb, and I would venture to guess maybe it’s in part because a stepparent is involved? I think that plays into it in our case. I have grown to love and appreciate my SM over the years, but she never had her own children and didn’t start seeing my dad until I was ten and my sister was eight. She has virtually no experience with babies/toddlers/preschoolers. She is kind, but definitely not warm and playful or the type that kids just take to instantly. I guess my dad could take the kids on his own, but that would seem like he’s excluding her. She has offered to watch them and while I know she is sincere, I just don’t think it would work out and don’t want anyone in a position of being too uncomfortable to say anything or feeling obligated.

Someone keeps faxing my phone at work. So annoying. Also I just ordered a burger from Five Guys for lunch. I have been bringing my lunch since the new year and technically I am leaving work so I guess I am not breaking my streak but I feel a little guilty about it. Also I never like burgers unless my iron is low so maybe that is why I am craving it so hard. I blame you for mentioning Five Guys trtlcrzy!

My boss called my cell from his cell in his car and I could hardly hear him and it sounded like he had his radio blasting. I made a comment that it was hard to hear him but he didn't turn it down and I was super distracted during the conversation.
We hung up and the sound continued.... turns out it was an Instagram story playing on my phone that didn't stop when I picked up the call. oops!

cagoldi I think it may have something to do with a step parent, granted my SM has stepped up her game and is more involved lately. She texted this week asking if we'd be in town and I said no and asked why, and she's said oh just like to see you all! She also has been in my life for 30 years, so she's def family at this point. My dad claims he will never be like his parents, and yet is actively turning into his dad🤷. And my grandma (who, bless her is in the hospital with pneumonia at 92🤞) is not warm and fuzzy, but I do have lots of memories visiting her growing up. And even though she scolds me for not visiting and sending pictures enough, she is sweet and had great treats to eat when we visited, ha. Coconut cake and a German chocolate cake, without fail every time we visited.

Hey ladies! WFH this friday in anticipation of snow storm. MH loves cherry coke zero but they just changed the formula to zero sugar and he's not a fan. Well I scored the last 3 12-packs of the old kind in town. Best wife ever!

Josie got her school Valentines mailbox and most are cards, maybe a little candy or plastic toy. Both kids are loving it, but we put together a goody bag with a pencil, a set of four stickers, a tiny pad, an eraser, and sharpener. I really thought I was going on the easy side of things. Gift giving is my love language— I don’t know how to tone it down. Last year was mostly cards. This year's the were about 4 gift bags including from the teachers. The rest was small candy. U don't the candy this year was particularly small compared to what comes in Halloween small candies.

Finally checking in today. I got to work early because I had to be in CPR training at 8. At 9:15, we took a break and saw it had started snowing. They told us then, they were shutting the plant down at 11:30. When we finished training at 10:15, I checked all my emails and immediately got called to a company wide meeting by the CEO.
I was so annoyed, but I'm home now. Already shoveled the driveway once as we are expecting about 8" between now and Sunday.
Just waiting on H to get home. Which will take him awhile. The city declared a state of emergency and asked employers to release employees early to avoid travel issues.

Now I want 5 Guys for dinner! Hmm, may have to make this happen.
We stayed after pick-up and let the kids play in the nice weather; there were several ladies from my MOPS group who I'm getting to be friends with there so we had a nice time chatting. So, so happy we switched to this school this year; I feel way more connected here than I ever did at the school last year.

Five guys was less than amazing. The fries were too greasy for me to stomach so I ended up eating half a cheeseburger and a shake. They were ok but nothing to write home about. Craving fulfilled I guess.

Maybe if you said something like that to your dad, it would penetrate. This is true. My parents love to spend time with my kids, but my mom usually takes the lead. My dad gets nervous, I think, being alone. But he is retired and my mom is not. When MH was gone for a long time when B was a baby and S was newly 3 I was struggling. B was a needy baby who needed to be held a lot. I literally couldn't figure out how to give S a bath while B was awake. My dad would come over 2 nights a week and just hold B so I could spend that time with S. Now, B loves my dad more than anyone else and I love seeing that relationship. That being said, he's never actually watched him or anything, but still put the time in in his own way. My in laws are the type you describe. They do not like babies, and do not remember how needy toddlers are (actual quotes from visits "why won't he eat that dinner!", "why is he crying for no reason?" Ummm cuz he's 2??? But now that they are starting to get older, they are interacting a bit more and it's nice.

I was the only one that gave candy with M's valentine's cards. Everyone else had sunglasses, mazes, scratch art, etc. My kids got about 60/40 candy to no candy. Oh and the bag of candy B got with reeses peanut butter cups and Mr. Goodbars I could have done without. I am not a overly crazy allergy mom, since B's allergy isn't life threatening, but seriously? It's literally plastered all over the room that he is allergic. Like in 5 different places. WTH?

Craving fulfilled I guess. Probably an unpopular opinion, but I’d always rather skip the fries. If I’m there to really indulge, a burger and a shake, otherwise just a burger (with everything on it). They make a killer veggie sandwich.

MH Step mother is not warm and fuzzy. She does have 2 grown boys of her own, but neither had kids, so she has no "biological" grandkids. But I truly don't believe she would be any different towards them. She has been in MH life forever, and has been married to his dad for the past 25 years.
ETA In his life but not in that relationship. I think I've mentioned before but MH Stepmother was his mother's best fried. So he grew up with her like an aunt and with his step brothers like cousins. They started dating in his late teens.
Edited again to add - she tries with the kids, it's just not her nature. She is a bit better now and likes to play games with S, which he loves.

Even in S class (where there are no allergies), he told me that someone brought in cupcakes for the party yesterday and they couldn't confirm they were from a nut free bakery so they couldn't serve them. I do not know how this family is so oblivious!

I think they request you not bring nuts if they are aware of anyone with a specific allergy, but other than that, no restrictions. When I accidentally mixed up the boys’ lunches a few weeks ago, I had to call DC and tell them to yank and sequester Xander’s bag until I got there to switch them because it had PB Ritz in it.

My dad is amazing with the kids and will do stuff with them without my mom, he even went on a field trip with ds’s class. He has worked with youth as a social worker for a really long time, so I guess that helps him be comfortable. My FIL on the other hand is a whole other ballpark, he loves the kids, but can’t change a diaper if his live depended on it.

Ds has a kid with a severe nut allergy in his class, nuts are banned in school and kids are even told not to eat nuts (peanut butter) for breakfast, because they could bring traces to school.
