For me the baby musts are:
- burrito wraps with Velcro...Halo, SwaddleMe, there are a few brands. My babies screamed bloody murder being wrapped up but settled really well once they were in snug - moby wrap or similar. I love my ergo when they get neck control but when they’re still curled up, I found I could get a lot more done with the moby wrap since they were so snugly in. I did not care for ring slings but some love them. - I never really used baby holding devices (swings, bouncer, etc) with my first but with my second they became as valuable as my own arms, I like to have one for each floor of the house. Really handy for keeping the baby close when you want a shower but they’re in a mood etc. - video monitor was something we skipped with my first but got as a gift with my second and it’s the tits, so much better to peek in and see if they’re really fussing or just settling themselves down again so you don’t go in unnecessarily - for the first 6 months or so I pretty much dress them in a onesie and footie jams around the clock, add a hat and blanket if we’re going out to the car. I’ve always had Feb/March babies in a cold climate. I have a strong preference for footie jams with zippers instead of snaps, way better for MOTN diaper changes when I’m so tired. - after 6 months I am less into the footie jams and more into onesies with little pants, socks, etc. The tiny outfits look cuter at this age and last longer for long babies with big feet. YMMV! - for breastfeeding moms I would agree don’t buy too many bottles, when you’re ready to introduce one, buy them one at a time till you find what the baby accepts. The medela brand breast pads were great. Fun tip is that any bra can be turned into a nursing bra at Nordstrom’s, so if you have a tricky time finding something in the nursing category try that. Don’t invest too much in nursing bras until about 6 weeks in, your boobs will go through a few sizes while they adjust to milk production. Soft nursing bras/tanks will be your friend and you will probably want to sleep in one too with breast pads inside so you won’t wake up soaking wet (you may still wake up soaking wet... if you don’t have a mattress protector on your own bed, get one!) -If you’re formula feeding from the get go the dr brown’s pitcher is cheap and fabulous, especially for reflux babies. Most people I know who bottle feed end up with Dr Brown’s because they are so good for keeping gas to a minimum. I used the ready to feed nursettes for the first few weeks and then switched to Kirkland brand when I felt she was taking more than 2oz a feed. I will probably start with the nursettes again this time. They’re for sure just a luxury not a must. - for infant bucket seats I would look for whatever is lightest, my Britax is a beast and extra rough to carry post c-section. I think Chicco is known to be light? Some people swear by skipping the bucket seat and going right to convertible but I really like the bucket for going out to restaurants etc. - I never loved my strollers (Bob revolution, Britax b-ready, maclearen umbrella) I think I’m just not much of a stroller person. - I love my SoYoung diaper bag, but it was a splurge. Important to look for are lots of interior pockets, lined with waterproof material in all sections, a secure outer pocket for cell phone/keys. My friend was happiest with a backpack, I found that less practical as I baby wore a lot. But it’s an option to consider!

The marpac dohm is the best white noise machine. This baby will be getting one. My H and I even sleep with one in our room now.

I realized it might sound weird that I’m giving both BF and FF advice... I exclusively breast fed D1 and formula fed D2. 😝

I did haaaate the bucket seat, and as soon as E could mostly sit up on her own (for shopping carts and restaurants) we ditched it for the convertible. I hated lugging it around, so much easier to just grab baby and go. I would keep your preference in mind when shopping for an infant seat too, we bought a cheap(er) one and I'm glad I didn't go with a bigger brand name for twice as much since we didn't use it more than 6 months

But eating with two hands... But lol at me... as if we’re going to restaurants with a 5 y/o, 3 y/o, and newborn. Hard pass!

Oh, for FTM, take everything they offer you in the hospital! From extra pump parts if you use their pump in the hospital, to tucks pads and mesh undies, ice packs for you, to open diaper packs, the baby hat, the nursette ready made formula bottles.... they don't reuse once the packs are open, even though the rest of the diapers and nursettes are still good. Take that shit home with you! The only thing we weren't allowed to take was the halo sleep sack.
I loved the socks they gave me post delivery (bonus was I didn't get my own socks filthy in the hospital) and I loved the mesh undies (was expecting to hate them). Also I am thrilled I'm going to be getting another water cup and I'm totally going to try to get a second one because twins, just so I can continue keeping one on my nightstand, one on the end table in the living room, and then an extra. Hahaha

grover, oh my gosh I love my hospital cups. I have 2 because I got one at a garage sale for a quarter a few years ago, but I was going to see if they'd give me an extra while I'm there again too haha. And YESSS to the mesh panties. I wore those for as long as I could. Definitely buy new slippers or socks for the hospital stay, ideally that you don't mind tossing when you leave (so many germs and body fluids!)

Thanks to this thread this week we're going to take a "date night" and go out to the BBB to make a list of things we for sure want. It's about 30 minutes away, so it'll be an adventure 😂

So because this is is my 3rd and last. I am planning on reusing everything possible. I will probably be getting:
some bottle brushes pacifiers probably at least one new swaddle thing and new cloth diapers after 2 kids and 4.25 years of use many are tired and stretched out and leaky if worn too long.
I am probably gonna keep rolling without a double stroller. I will probably wear baby 3 next summer and we have a bike trailer we use as a double stroller sometimes like at the zoo. We also have a red wagon that fits 2 at least which works well for parades or outside festivals.

Ok, so obviously I (we FTMs) need a crib, dresser, changing table, and rocker in the nursery. I will also need a car seat and two bases. Should we get 2 car seats (one for each vehicle)? What do I need to look for in picking a good car seat? We also need bottles, but how many? What kind of nipples do you get? Do I need a bottle warmer/sterilizer? What brand of bottles is best? I’m planning on nursing. What kind of sleep clothes are the best? I’ve heard about sleep sacks. Are those better than a regular onesie and pants? How many blankets and burp cloths and everything do I need? What are essentials I can’t/shouldn’t live without? What is considered something important/essential that I don’t need? I agree if you are doing an infant car seat you just need the two bases because you will bring the actual car seat in the house with you. We have a Chico keyfit and have liked it. I nursed exclusively for the most part and really didn’t need to buy bottles. You will get some as samples from different stores and we just used those when we occasionally needed them. I only pumped when I needed to because I was full. So I would wait on those to see what you need. If you really want to get them I would wait to open so you can return if you don’t use. We used footie PJs and a swaddle until she could roll over. We like snap PJs when she was little, it’s a personal preference. And swaddles that zipped rather than velcro. We got the swaddle me pod when she was little and loved them. Then Love to Dream when she outgrew those. We got a ton of the muslin blankets and really didn’t use them. We used a little bit thicker ones to keep her warm in car seat. I used a ton of burp cloths. I liked the Aden and Anais ones cuz they caught more spit up. You will want some sort of baby container, swing, rock n play, pack n play. We used rnp and pnp. We also had the Kick n play piano and would recommend. We used Lucie’s list website to figure out things for our registry and get reviews. www.lucieslist.com/

Apparently there are also zipper sleepers out there that unzip top to bottom, I think from target maybe? I will be investing in a few of those.

Get the frame the infant bucket clicks into to make it a stroller This was a lifesaver after my csection. I couldn't lug around the car seat and it had a nice big basket on the bottom.

+1 to Lucies list. It's all the information consolidated. Everyone's needs are slightly different so what works for one person may not for another.

I'm debating the sit and stand stroller. DD will be a month shy of 4. It would be useful for longer trips to places like the zoo. DH's family is super into Christmas so I know I could get one then if I want. I still have time to decide.

I need to pick up a couple more cloth diapers. I have the ones from DD that are in pretty good condition. It wild be nice to have a few more because I was washing after every two days so it would be nice to have a little more leeway if needed.

We're planning for this to be our last baby, so we're going to reuse as much of DD's stuff as we can. But I do need a carrier. Anyone have a good one they like? I had an Ergo for DD and hated it, it was difficult to put on and she really didn't like being in there.

Or are you looking to try something totally different?

Yogurt, that is a very good question! I think I'm open to try anything as long as it is comfortable and easy to get on. I'd like it to be versatile so I can wear the baby either facing out or facing towards me.

Thank y’all! This is so helpful!
Moms who cloth diaper...please tell me all about it. The good, the bad, and the ugly. How is it when LO goes to daycare? Do daycares accept CD or do you have to use regular diapers at daycare?

@ges072115 I started with the Infantino Infant Carrier. It looks like they’ve expanded now and I think it is the Up Close. I used that until about 5 months when I switched to my ergo. I don’t know what kind of ergo, my sister gave it to me. We also had a moby wrap, but I never could figure that one out. orangehibiscus I had planned to cloth diaper, but ended up not. Our daycare (a center) was a hard no on using them.

Thank y’all! This is so helpful! Moms who cloth diaper...please tell me all about it. The good, the bad, and the ugly. How is it when LO goes to daycare? Do daycares accept CD or do you have to use regular diapers at daycare? The good: Cloth diapering I mostly like. My daycare accepts it but I think a lot of the teachers hate dealing with it. I did it to save money. My daycare uses 6 diapers average a day so I am sure over 4 yrs I have saved a couple bucks. The bad: My children have skinny legs which causes leaks. Buying the diapers can be expensive but I found kawaii diapers with my second which are much cheaper than bum genius and a lot of other brands. They seem to hold up just as well too. I was never that good at finding cloth diapers that didn't leak overnight. So I used disposible at night with my son. Diaper laundry is another thing to add to your household chore list. The ugly: Breastfeed poops are easy you can through those diapers right in the wash. Once the baby starts eating solids the poopy diapers need to be cleaned out before washing. We have a diaper sprayer hooked to the toilet which makes it easier. but this can be a disgusting very smelly job. Nothing is better than a ploppable toddler poop in my book.
