We never did a smash cake. I got a very nice cake and we all sang to the baby and then we cut a piece for the baby.

I'm having a hard time making a birthday cake. All the recipes I find are turning out poorly, and quite frankly it making me mad. I'm probably just going to throw in the healthy cake towel and just make an old standby. I don't want to pump her full of sugar, but it's one day and it's not like shes gonna eat the whole thing. Yea. Dude. Just make a regular ole cake and call it a day.

Thatβs what Iβm paying and I have to get my own cake. I think some places do a free smash cake but maybe you have to buy like a regular cake with that. Not sure. But I would definitely check. If we end up having a small party for m then I'm probably just going to make cupcakes or something The photographer I used with DD1 included the cake... this one doesnβt. The bakery I found makes smaller ones specifically for cake smash shoots since they are pretty popular around here.

Everyone spends money differently but i wouldnβt ever consider spending $350 on cake smash pictures ]I wonder if a photographer would ever come to you first bday party and snap good candids and take pictures as everyoneβs singing and of the baby eating their cake. Almost mini mini mini wedding like. That would be worth it to me. To get those good shots w family too. You could totally find someone to do that, thereβs tons of photographers that like doing lifestyle shoots.

cythe I make applesauce cupcakes for first birthdays. DS1 ate it fine on his first birthday. LO just looked at it and cried. (He still doesn't really like real food so crying at food is normal.) I really like the recipe but I'm GF so my taste buds are probably adjusted. However, my other GF family members like them and DS1 still loves them at 3. detoxinista.com/first-birthday-applesauce-cupcakes-grain-free-dairy-free-nut-free/ I do coconut whipped cream for the topping.

We did a smash cupcake with DS1, and while it was super cute for pics, it was so messy, and he didnβt really enjoy getting his hands all sticky. Iβm probably going to do a smash cupcake for DS2, but Iβm dreading the mess. It will be fine though - I can deal with it for one party. Just 2 weeks away! π²

What did everyone do for gifts for first birthdays? Obviously Ev wont remember or likely care what we get her. I'm not even sure what kids are playing with these days haha.

I got him these Boon bath tubes and cogs. They suction to the walls and are adorable and awesome. DS2 thinks they're cool, he spins all the spinney things and whatnot. DS1 is obsessed with them lol. So, just something little. π€·ββοΈ

Yeah...with DS I thought about it but then was like nah! everybody else wants to enjoy it too so whatever. E isn't lactose intolerant or allergic to nuts right? I am making my go to usual cake and it has almond meal in it so that's sorta healthy right haha! Frosting is a whipped white choc ganache - high calories so good for baby eh... Also a thought - even a simple whipped cream as a frosting is really nice - just a thought.

Initially I didn't want to get anything - we have too much stuff however I saw this activity table at a kids resale for lil fella. I know he will be playing with it for several years. Even DS, 4, loves playing with those things at the doctors all the time so when I saw it for a super deal ($20 - those things aren't exactly cheap ) I nabbed it up. It's used but looks practically brand new and baby won't care but my wallet is happy.

codex320 it's true what rebeccabunch says...what everyone thinks is of value to them is different. Simply put if it's something that will bring you joy I'd say go for it and plus also baby turning 1 is a milestone. Personally I couldn't spend that - it could be a cultural thing and I also know hubs would roll his eyes. We're not big on prof photos...we didn't even bother to have a prhotograher for our wedding reception. We spent it on food instead haha! although one of my friends is a pretty good amateur photographer and she was happy to snap away so we just let her have at it.

duskymonkey, We had professional photos for our wedding BUT it was a family friend and we paid next to nothing for them. for the 1st birthday/cake smash, she provides everything and we can do some family photos at the same time so that is nice. i know how much people pay for professional photos and i just can't spend that. I think it'll be a lot of fun and hopefully get some cute photos from it! it is scheduled for 10/14 so i have to figure out what to wear!

cythe, M LOVES dolls/plushy animals. In daycare, they tell me how much of a nurturer she is. It really is so sweet. So she'll most likely get a doll.

We....didn't get LO a birthday present. He is not lacking anything in any department so I don't feel toooo bad. DS1's birthday falls in the summer and with LO's falling during football season, I fear we are always going to be scrambling regarding his birthday. It makes me sad. It'll get easier as they get older - at least that's what I'm telling myself. He did receive lots of fun things at his party. Even still, he prefers to push around empty amazon boxes, DS1's toy cars, and his favorite activity - throwing every single item from the toy kitchen onto the floor then finding the toy stainless steel pans and banging them on the kitchen hardwood.

We bought DS a little backpack and lunch bag for his birthday. But itβs to take to my parents/ILs when they babysit so he was going to get one either way, we just made it his birthday present because he really needs nothing. DD picked out a little hoodie for him and thatβs all heβs getting from us π€·ββοΈ DD has the giraffe and we got DS the raccoon.

Second most of the FP lil people stuff. Great suggestions! I have my eye on the camper one for Xmas and DS will prob get the LEGO version so theyβll have similar age appropriate type toys. Well thatβs the plan and that could change

I am excited! I got the train and tender for lil fella's cake finished last night. I had a bit of yellow marzipan left and made a duck so now I am thinking I need a pond and a bunch of toadstools too. #spiraling

CoachTsWife, our HW floors are so dinged up with DS dropping his matchbox cars. It's really dreadful. Good thing our long term plan is to replace the flooring and carpet once the kids are a bit older and more responsible and can puke in a tub or whatever and by then the W2W carpet will need replacing so until then we're going to have to live with it.
