This is against city ordinances- junked out or fully functional. I will take flamingos over the 4'x8" ItWorks! banner on someone's fence. Also not allowed per HOA. I'm sure I wouldn't have been allowed to leave my leaves down over the winter.

But how do you make sure the Mountain Dew drinking Whiskey Tangos next door don't keep their junked out cars or giant flamingos in the front yard? My neighbor has one of those flamingoes with a head that moves in the wind to make it look like it is eating in her front yard. It’s the best. Sadly, my H would be the Mountain Dew drinker. Some days I wonder why I married him. Have you seen those two story tall, weather worn flamingos near-ish to us?

There is a house on the way to work that has an entire flock of flamingos on their front yard.

Here, it’s very hard to find a neighborhood without an HOA, at least in city limits. Our current HOA isn’t too bad and I think it’s actually beneficial to the neighborhood. I’ve had a really awful one though. As with anything, all HOAs are not created equal. I know, I know, insert Nic Cage here.

Tell me about flamingo people. You guys seem to view them as a cautionary tale.
I am imagining them as great fun. Like, Jimmy Buffet gives a yearly concert near me on the beach. The people are so much fun and are kind of annoying, but in an endearing way. This is how I am picturing the flamingo people. Am I wrong?

Our across the street neighbors are the only reason I'd want an HOA.
We lucked out and for some reason, not only did they opted to mow their lawn for the first time in close to a year the week before our open house, but they also found a way to get their garage door to close for the first time in the 7 years we've lived here.
We looked at a couple neighborhoods where the HOA was solely to provide membership to a swim/cabana club (~$500/year). I could also get on board with that.

Have you seen those two story tall, weather worn flamingos near-ish to us? I keep meaning to stop and take a picture of them. I just tried to see if I could find a picture of them on the internet. And I found an old newsletter from the neighborhood asking if anyone had seen one of them because they were stolen from the yard. You know it was some neighbor that had had it with the fucking flamingos and decided to get rid of it.

I would much rather have a neighbor who never mowed their lawn than the guy two doors down from our old condo who used to walk his dog in his underwear.

thisbitch, how did the one guy end up dominating/blocking the entire rest of the committee/board? Or, as the neighborhood change, so did the composition of the committee/board? The change happened gradually, and it was a combination of factors. The one guy originally brought up PG movies not being family friendly and asked for reconsideration of the types of music played, etc, but there were other changes as well. He recruited church buddies to serve on the board with him, one of the church ladies was volunteered as social committee chair and then recruited her fellow church ladies to plan events, etc. It wasn’t terrible to me, it was more just interesting from a sociological perspective what happened as they moved in. And their church pushed them to associate with other church goers and word was spread about the neighborhood, and then there were changes.

I think we can all agree on that. I hope. What kind of underwear? That really shouldn't matter. It kind of does. But still no.

I would much rather have a neighbor who never mowed their lawn than the guy two doors down from our old condo who used to walk his dog in his underwear. My old neighborhood also had the guy (two doors down from us) whose lawn was only mowed when the city came out and did it and charged him for it. His yard was a haven for rodents and snakes. That charmer also left his dogs in illegal restraints so that no one could approach his front door. One of his dogs died due to exposure to the sun and heat in 100+* weather, but that didn’t stop him. It made me wish so hard that we had those covenants that stayed how long your grass could get.

I would much rather have a neighbor who never mowed their lawn than the guy two doors down from our old condo who used to walk his dog in his underwear. The lawn is the least offensive thing they do. Her family is making a strong attempt at one-upping the underwear dog walker. Police visit them semi-regularly, they abuse their dogs, they blast air horns at all hours of the night (which we can't hear from our house across the street, but the other neighbors next to them complain), and are just overall very miserable people in general. But these things aren't apparent during an open house showing.

Abusing animals puts them on an entirely different planet then never mowing their lawn. That's awful.

I am a reasonable person and I'm not disagreeing with you here. Someone said that even if 5% of people are excluded then the movie shouldn't be shown. As a general statement I disagree with that. Someone (again, NOT ME) could argue that Moana is offensive because it includes Polynesian gods? To be clear, I am not one of these people, but if there are 2 families like that in a group of 100 houses, I think it's still reasonable to show the movie. That’s still not apples to apples. It “could be argued” is not the same as it having an explicit religious agenda. A reasonable person could not make that argument. Apples to apples would be a kids movie pushing a different religious agenda. Kind of. But not really because even that doesn’t get at the power imbalance. I wish I could like this a million times. I really appreciate the thought you're putting into this when someone else in your position could easily let it roll because it doesn't personally affect them. Thank you, truly.

They are... at least not abusing the dogs to the point of death like thisbitch described, but when we reported it, there was nothing they could do about it. It is.. saddening. There should be requirements that you're a basically decent human being before another life is entrusted to you.

I bet it’s one vocal person who thinks Disney is the devil or some shit. I was just going to say this. If Boz is the go to animation character in their home, then I bet they think Harry Potter promotes witchcraft and Disney is turning us all into heathens. We watch Boz and our cat’s name is Hermione. Boz has really catchy songs that you can never get rid of. Maybe it’s that they wanted to choose something that we rated G?

Jeez. My anti-vaxxing neighbors with their huge anti-vaxxing banner in their front yard don't seem that bad after all.

Uh, is it Friday?
I have a flamingo in my front yard. MH & son picked it out and I hate it, but I let it stay.

I'd be pretty offended by this and be making a big stink, if some of my dues money was going to fund this. Seconding thank you for thinking about this, even though it doesn't affect you personally rvasc.

My MIL lives in a HOA community. They mow the bottom halves of the lawns and the top half is apparently homeowner responsibility. It.... does not look good. Also, she's trying to get them to let her straighten her driveway, which they don't want to do, but they are constantly sending her nasty letters about people running over the grass and killing it next to her driveway as they're backing out. But it's impossible not to because the driveway is currently so curved. And you're not allowed to park on the street at night so you have no choice but to go in the driveway. She's annoyed.
