They only do movie nights a few times a year. I haven’t been here for any yet. oh ok. It would be interesting if you could find out from a neighbor if these type of movies are typical or if this is crazy lady finally getting to exercise her movie choosing power. I could also easily find this out at a committee meeting. I’m sure they have a list of what they’ve shown, and it would be a more natural place to ask when planning the next one comes up, as in, “what’s been shown for the past few years?” I’m not one to stir the pot, and I don’t want to raise a stink. It may be as simple as if I can join the committee with a couple friends, she will just move on without drama.

You're really going to say that 5% of people who are in the religious/cultural majority and do not experience religious discrimination getting up in their feelings about their precious being exposed to other cultural ideas about mortality is the same thing as a group of people in a religious/cultural minority being uncomfortable with a movie that actually pushing Christianity?

You understand why a kids’ movie with the subtle underlying message that if you don’t accept Jesus Christ as your lord and savior then you are headed to hell is more exclusionary than a movie some lady objects to simply because it portrays a different religious and cultural tradition, right? lol in general, of course I do. come on this was a very specific argument related to 95% of people in an HOA being on board with any given thing. my HOA can't even agree with that majority on whether it's okay for Deborah in unit 40 to paint her deck a slightly darker shade of tan I think you are also assuming that Christians (presumably the 95%) are on board simply because they are Christians, which is clearly not the case since rvasc is the Christian-est of Christians.

I also think even if we were able to show a more popular movie once, it would be way more well-attended, and that would be that.

Something like this happened in my old subdivision. I think I have talked about it some, but the neighborhood got colonized by a bunch of members of this local evangelical mega-church. One of the church members joined the board (I had previously been a member.) Prior to that, we had always showed Disney/ family style movies, but the member from the church started pushing back and arguing that we should show PG films because not all families allowed their children to watch PG movies, etc. He blocked different types of music at our block party, and so on. They never (when I lived there) showed a Christian movie, but having an ever increasing percentage of evangelical Christians changed the neighborhood in ways I never expected. I think this is a one woman operation. She owns her own “church,” but all of her sermon videos are just her and her kids at the dining room table. Woof. This added tidbit makes it pretty damn icky to me.

It will drive down ALL of the property values! It will ruin the charm of the neighborhood! Tell Debra that she’d better paint right or you will impose a fine that she will then probably refuse to pay. Umm, my association? We have a contractor painting all the decks so that we don't get exactly this issue. Otherwise everyone wants their own version of tan, and their own paint choice, etc. And someone won't paint at all. Also, generally, as I know just about everyone knows, it's not getting 95% of the owners to agree on anything, other than a change in the declarations. It's the majority of the board the homeowners elected that make the decisions. It always bemuses me that so few people in associations actually either run for their board or just plain old vote. And, refusal to pay a fine can lead to some very unhappy consequences. I think someone was looking into buying a condo/townhome. Another thing to think about it the option to simply refuse to pay a fine/assessment or walk away from it has definite legal repercussions in a well run association. And any legal costs associated with chasing down a fine are also charged to that specific homeowner. Yep, I know - such a long long boring post.

I am meh about this. As a non-religious person, I have no problem watching a movie that is about religion. Like, religion is a fact of life for most humans. I respect that. I don't think I would feel excluded unless only Christians were invited to watch.
I mean, I probably would opt out since those movies sounds boring. However, just because I would not get upset about it doesn't mean that other wouldn't, I would probably question why these are the movies that are being shown or make suggestions for other family friendly that are not religious based. Just because I am blase does not mean others may not be upset.
Edit: Just read about her home sermons. It sounds like she wants to move her church from her kitchen to something else. She is using the HOA to recruit. That is both laughable and sad.

thisbitch, how did the one guy end up dominating/blocking the entire rest of the committee/board? Or, as the neighborhood change, so did the composition of the committee/board?

HOAs are pretty rare on Long Island. I find them so...Stepford Wives.
I mean, I am sure there are so wonderful positives, but since I have no firsthand experience, I can only go by the complaints I see on message boards.

Association life is certainly not for everyone, that's for sure! It can be a good fit for people in certain phases of their lives, and for others, better to be avoided entirely.

My neighbor has one of those flamingoes with a head that moves in the wind to make it look like it is eating in her front yard. It’s the best. Sadly, my H would be the Mountain Dew drinker. Some days I wonder why I married him.
