I'm out for HIH DC GTG this week. (womp womp) There is a neighborhood thing with the fire department that evening, and not only did I just accept an invitation to be on the neighborhood association committee but DS is obsessed with fire trucks ATM. Otherwise I would totally skip it for you ladies.

Trump is telling people Mueller will soon write a letter clearing him: I'll admit; I'm not convinced 45 knowingly colluded. I think he's guilty of a lot of shit, but collusion might not be one of them. His sons, Skippy, and many who were part of his campaign/administration, on the other hand... ETA: I also think 45 is only talking about collusion with Russia. I have no idea (and neither does he) what the scope of Mueller's investigation has become. For all we know, because of the way the instructions to Mueller are worded, the orange one is still going to go down.

You may have seen Tweets from people who found comments in support of repealing Net Neutrality from dead relatives... apparently someone also thought comments from a sitting U.S. Senator would fly under the radar...

shadesofgold Thanks for the info. I have never really looked into what the CDC does other than what you see in movies/on television. The NIH, sure, but not the CDC

I'm kind of confused by Corker because retirement means he has nothing to lose by voting no. Who cares if the Senate GOP is angry with him? And if he's seeking a presidential bid against Trump then you'd think he would want to set himself up as against this bill. Being a deficit hawk for years and years and the voting for this bill looks pretty terrible if you're trying to set yourself apart from Trump.
Maybe he just really is looking out for his own wealth.

I finally got around to reading the Time story about the Silence Breakers as POY and cried pretty much throughout.
They also addressed 45's tweet about turning it down and he's so fucking narcissistic. They apparently made their decision in September, long before his dumbass tweet.

I really don't get it. The tax bill only has 37 percent of Tennesseans in favor and while 45's rating is higher than the national average, it's still only around 40 percent.

I thought none of it was applicable until people file taxes in 2019 except for potentially a change in withholding in your current paycheck. I could definitely be misunderstanding that though. Ah, I see what you meant. Sorry, yes the bill would affect their 2018 taxes which would be filed in 2019 I think it actually favors Dems in the 2018 mid-terms politically. Most people don't think they'll get a break on taxes (which is incorrect actually - for the short term) but they're not going to be proven wrong until Feb-April 2019.

It is not a good look for sure. But jumping on board and then back off board at the last minute would really enrage GOP leadership. That's pretty tough to do once you've already conceded.

I'm confused too, because Corker is crazy loaded. Like, if you had more than 40 million wouldn't you feel beyond comfortable? He is 65, you're going to have enough to give to your family for them to be rich forever I DON'T UNDERSTAND.
I say this as someone without money, but at a certain point, wouldn't money stop mattering? Wouldn't you just tip everyone at the diner $100? No? Okay fine.

Also, they're all focused on the tax bill right now and they'll probably pass it. But then they have to immediately turn around and try to avert a shutdown which will probably be ugly if Dems or people like Rand Paul/HFC really stick to their guns.
So it could step all over their "yay tax bill!" news cycle.

So Politico also rolled out almost the exact same story at the exact same time. I'd like to know the story behind how that happened.

Or Republicans, even anti-Trump ones, like tax cuts at any cost most of the time. It's the only time deficit hikes are fine, just fine

Weird coincidence that the government ushered in by conspiracy theorists who had these supposed videos is right now facing charges it would very much like people to be distracted from?

OMGWTFBBQ!?!?!?!?!!11? CIA tip? For real? Do not share intelligence with foriegn powers you alkrjgklwrjgflaef piece of shit. Well no, it prevented a bombing according to reports. We’d expect the same from other nations. Edit: should’ve kept reading. Yeah, that was me seeing CIA and jumping to him canoodling with Putin. I realize looking back that things like that do need to be shared.

It was a standard warning. The point is: no matter how new he was to politics, there was no reason for him to be unaware of the implications of working with the fucking Russians during--and after--the election. Yeah, I meant it's huge that there's no way they can argue ignorance here.

I feel like there's way more going on than McCain is letting on. You don't just miss the biggest vote of the year, go home for the holidays, and then plan on coming back to work after... Right?

The article I posted about this said that they were not allowed to use the words in funding documents. (I'm assuming requests for money from the government or possibly when giving grants. I don't know if the CDC gives grants, but that's beside the point.) I do believe the ban on words is there, but only in that sense and not on their actual research. I think the story was blown up beyond what it actually was, which is still terrifying in my opinion (slippery slope and all that), but that could be the "complete mischaracterization." The CDC does give grants. A fuck-ton of grants. DC has one right now for a 3-year project to engage vulnerable populations - particular transgender people of color - around HIV prevention and care. They fund such a broad array of activities - from opioid crisis response to promotion of condom use to Zika prevention - it is mind-boggling to think this would be an agency-wide ban on these fundamental terms. That said, I do believe the idea of a "ban" is what is probably what is mischaracterized. It is very possible that the agency, or a department within the agency, discussed that certain terms/ideas/programs would be elevated while others would be discouraged, perhaps in an informal way. Just as Dept of Ed sent out letters to grantees this summer saying that "risk avoidance" education (the new and improved abstinence-only ed) would be prioritized. They continued to disburse funds to (most) programs operating comprehensive strategies, but those grantees know they need to be politic about how they phrase things in their communications with Ed going forward. None of this to say it isn't still potentially catastrophic and infuriating and dangerous. The organization I work for applied for the transgender/HIV prevention-focused grant and I am almost glad we didn't get it. I can't imagine trying to be a CDC grantee right now and trying to run a program that would be impactful while also negotiating this insanity. Any CDC grant that I've applied for or worked with has required grantees use one of their specific evidence-based intervention models. Are they planning to completely disassociate themselves from those models now? It is crazy.

Depending on his treatment, a virus could be a pretty big deal in the short term. He may be immunocompromised from chemo/immunotherapy, in which case hospitalization for very basic bugs can be the norm. I am really hoping to see him back this winter.

Ok so the Trump campaign were warned by the FBI that Russia would try to infiltrate, and the FBI urged them to report any Russian overtures. And they didn't. So they can't plead ignorance on that anymore.

Apparently Senators Leahy and Manchin are among at least 4 who have changed their minds about Franken resigning. The male fragility is strong. I just read the comments on a FB post about this. It’s a lot of ELEVENTY!!1! Gillibrand is the actual worst and she’s the reason he’s leaving because she wants to run in 2020. And, all these women are lying and it’s a republican set up. There is a lot of misogyny on both sides of the aisle. And a lot of those comments were coming from women. So I can’t really be surprised that women vote against their best interests when they seem to hate themselves so much. Jaysus.

I mean, even if he isn't dying, he is very very sick. If he is trying to fight a virus while his body is already destroyed from treatment, he should not be walking around in public even if he could. I buy that he was advised/ordered to go home. ETA: +1 to Minerva's assessment.
