Ok, so that title might be a bit hopeful, but I'm feeling very powerless and rather hopeless at the moment, TBH. So here's to hoping this week brings some seriously good news.

I really really really want a tiny crack to form with the tax bill. I felt like we thought health care would pass and it didn’t. I k ow it’s different and I only have 1% hope but damn I hope there’s a crack that can get bigger.

It simply boggles my mind that the GOP want to push through this tax form that is so deeply unpopular - especially the House that is looking at re-elections in less than a year now. What exactly do they have on the horizon that they think will boost their popularity after people realize that nothing is trickling down to them?

I actually tweeted this morning that I’m having a hard timing wrapping my brain around people so gleefully voting yes on a bill that only 26% of Americans support. Like wtf?

This lovely chap actually helped write the regulations governing the appointment and procedures of a Special Counsel. Someone who has had more coffee than me: so he's saying Trump COULD directly fire Mueller?

They are banking on people not seeing the negative effects of the tax bill until after 2018. The individual tax credits will be in place when they file in April 2018 so most people will be happy and/or forget about it by next November.

Someone who has had more coffee than me: so he's saying Trump COULD directly fire Mueller? That's what he's saying. He's also saying the regs are written in such a way as to require such a firing to be done openly. More checks and balances. He also also says 45 might do it because that's how 45 rolls, and if/when it happens it will be a constitutional crisis.

It's my own fault for continuing to listen to the country music station (I like the morning show, okay.), but if I hear one more tax reform/ "job creators are unfairly penalized." radio commercial I am going to lose it. They're courting public opinion hard. I listen to Elliot and I was just thinking the other day that before Trump, I had never really hear political ads on the radio (they are all against the tax bill and health care bill)

I’m getting from this that while he *could* fire Mueller, he’d have to do so openly, which would cause a constitutional crisis. So he *probably* won’t. Mueller is our only “Check” against POTUS.

I *really* think this corker thing could be a thing if people keep calling their reps. I'm going to call Wittman today even thought he doesn't give a fuck about my opinion.

And with the tax vote (today?) let’s not forget that the budget runs out Friday. So busy week for Congress.

They have a really busy week ahead. They've tied up CHIP, CSR funding and Section 702 reauthorization in this continuing resolution that they have to pass by end of business Friday.

I don't know how deeply unpopular it truly is right now, at least among the GOP and particularly their base. I think they're hoping to get past midterms and then push it as "but we will save your gun and protect the innocent babies".

Just please please please everyone call your reps today, and call McConnell and tell him to halt the tax bill until Doug Jones is seated. He won't listen, but keeping his staff busy might slow down his other treachery.

Anyone know if the latest version of the tax bill includes the change requiring you to live in your home for 5 years (instead of 2) before selling in order to avoid capital gains tax? I saw it in previous versions but am having a hard time finding a good summary of the current version that addresses this. Will totally change our plans if it's in there.

Uncaripswife and any other fees I'm thinking of you this week. I hope we can avoid a shutdown but if we don't, I'll buy you a very large margarita

The news media have really grabbed on to NJ, VA and AL as signs that a blue wave is coming and that Trump is toxic. It's hurting his feels so he's reminding us that our side was really depressed in February. People interchangeably use "Congress" to mean the legislature as a whole OR the House

Montana, Kansas 4th, Utah 3rd, Georgia 6th, and South Carolina If I were him I’m not sure I would consider KS04 and GA06 big victories... it’s because of how terribly disliked HE is that those races were the closest they have been in years (decades?) and the GOP stronghold of the district was threatened.

H believes it is since it was in both bills but is not 100% on it. He's going to finish reading it this morning at work though so I can confirm later.

But doesn't the requirement that he do it openly rely on Congress to act? I haven't read the actual regs but that tweet thread seems to be saying that 45 can just do it, no Congress required. I'm guessing (really guessing because I need to look at the regs) that the Congressional role here is impeachment if the Executive fires the spec prosecutor to obstruct justice. Going to try and find time to look at those regs today...

The suggestion in the tweet thread is that the Special Counsel is protected by the fact that Trump would have to openly fire him himself. But how is that a protection? It only is if the Executive is assured of Swift and significant consequences for such a move. If we're relying on Trey Gowdy to impose consequences, I'm not at all reassured.

With the current legislative branch, the open sunlight firing is not at all reassuring.

The NYT piece this morning has me a bit calmed down though. He's mercurial, but at least, for the moment, it doesn't sound like he's preparing to axe Mueller

I hope that the White House Counsel has done their job in teaching Trump about what happened with Richard Nixon.
I am not worried right now that he will fire Mueller. I think he is so convinced he did nothing wrong and he wants the investigation to show that. I also think he wants to do whatever he can to discredit it, so that if he is found of wrongdoing, they have that to fall back on. I am more worried of the repercussions from that honestly.
