Apparently Senators Leahy and Manchin are among at least 4 who have changed their minds about Franken resigning. The male fragility is strong. I just read the comments on a FB post about this. It’s a lot of ELEVENTY!!1! Gillibrand is the actual worst and she’s the reason he’s leaving because she wants to run in 2020. And, all these women are lying and it’s a republican set up. There is a lot of misogyny on both sides of the aisle. And a lot of those comments were coming from women. So I can’t really be surprised that women vote against their best interests when they seem to hate themselves so much. Jaysus. Training us to hate ourselves, doubt ourselves, doubt each other, and tear each other down is all part of the system.

I feel like there's way more going on than McCain is letting on. You don't just miss the biggest vote of the year, go home for the holidays, and then plan on coming back to work after... Right? I mean, even if he isn't dying, he is very very sick. If he is trying to fight a virus while his body is already destroyed from treatment, he should not be walking around in public even if he could. I buy that he was advised/ordered to go home. ETA: +1 to Minerva 's assessment. I said it in the other thread but I also think that he doesnt want this vote to be his final/lasting legacy/etc. So he can stay home, recouperate, and possibly come back for a different vote.

The article I posted about this said that they were not allowed to use the words in funding documents. (I'm assuming requests for money from the government or possibly when giving grants. I don't know if the CDC gives grants, but that's beside the point.) I do believe the ban on words is there, but only in that sense and not on their actual research. I think the story was blown up beyond what it actually was, which is still terrifying in my opinion (slippery slope and all that), but that could be the "complete mischaracterization." The CDC does give grants. A fuck-ton of grants. DC has one right now for a 3-year project to engage vulnerable populations - particular transgender people of color - around HIV prevention and care. They fund such a broad array of activities - from opioid crisis response to promotion of condom use to Zika prevention - it is mind-boggling to think this would be an agency-wide ban on these fundamental terms. That said, I do believe the idea of a "ban" is what is probably what is mischaracterized. It is very possible that the agency, or a department within the agency, discussed that certain terms/ideas/programs would be elevated while others would be discouraged, perhaps in an informal way. Just as Dept of Ed sent out letters to grantees this summer saying that "risk avoidance" education (the new and improved abstinence-only ed) would be prioritized. They continued to disburse funds to (most) programs operating comprehensive strategies, but those grantees know they need to be politic about how they phrase things in their communications with Ed going forward. None of this to say it isn't still potentially catastrophic and infuriating and dangerous. .

So.much.misogyny. Poor little Al got such a raw deal from big bad Gillibrand. They make him out to be a fucking hero and it makes me want to smash everything.

I can completely understand being advised to avoid crowds, etc. I remain surprised that he isn't staying in DC and not even coming in to work until it's time to vote and he shows up wearing a mask to cast his vote.

You may have seen Tweets from people who found comments in support of repealing Net Neutrality from dead relatives... apparently someone also thought comments from a sitting U.S. Senator would fly under the radar... My father's name was used. He passed away four years ago

None of this to say it isn't still potentially catastrophic and infuriating and dangerous. The organization I work for applied for the transgender/HIV prevention-focused grant and I am almost glad we didn't get it. I can't imagine trying to be a CDC grantee right now and trying to run a program that would be impactful while also negotiating this insanity. Any CDC grant that I've applied for or worked with has required grantees use one of their specific evidence-based intervention models. Are they planning to completely disassociate themselves from those models now? It is crazy. I am wondering if the CDC is asking grantees and accountants to avoid using those terms because they are being flagged by the Trump administration or Congress. Since Congress controls budget allocations for federal agencies, they have oversight of grants. There are folks in Congress who have been known to go after researchers who use certain key words in their grant titles and abstracts. One of my mentors actually testified in front of Congress back in the aughts about her research because it was flagged by some idiot who thought her NSF grant was superfluous. She verbally kicked his ass, not surprisingly since she is also funded by the DoD and her research has important implications for bio-inspired design and material engineering. Anyway, when I was writing scientific grants to study mating behaviors, we were warned in a wink-wink-nudge-nudge way to avoid certain searchable terms because of Congressional oversight. It’s not right, but it is one way scientists survive and get funded in hostile environments.

So Politico also rolled out almost the exact same story at the exact same time. I'd like to know the story behind how that happened. Weird coincidence that the government ushered in by conspiracy theorists who had these supposed videos is right now facing charges it would very much like people to be distracted from? This might be unpopular or make me sound crazy but I don't think it's outside the realm of reason to have preparedness plans for something cruising in from space. Do I think it's likely? No. But we also didn't think it was likely that someone would put a bomb in his underwear and board a plane. I think the person who went to the Times was trying to say, "Hey, this is a pretty significant gap in our national security plans." (Full disclosure, I read the WaPo story, not the NYT one, but that's what I gleaned from it)

Not necessarily. As others of said, it may be best for him to go home. It is also very likely his last holiday season with his family, so if they suggested that he go back to recuperate, I can see him heeding that advice. He could also not want this to be his final vote, if things are worse than they’re saying (which could be the case)

Last year that all changed, american people found their voice. and hes now goin on about his inauguration and how the people are now the rulers again.
The entire world has heard the news and seen the signs that america is coming back and coming back strong.
Simple principle duty of govt is to serve its citizens.
