I finished Butcher & Blackbird and for me it was such a great balance between horror and romance/smut, it made me think of Dexter, if it was a romance show with killing in it. I had a blast reading it and I will definitely pick up the next in the series when it comes out. I need more horror books with smut/romance plots.
I also read This Wretched Valley, which I adored and was a really great wilderness/survival horror story. It's about four people who go into the Kentucky woods to find an undiscovered rock climbing rock (for a PHD thesis thing), but the forest is sketchy AF and it does not end well for anybody (not a spoiler - on the back and in the first chapter). It was unique and super fast paced - I read it in just over a day and never wanted to put it down. Highly recommend for anyone who enjoyed The Ruins and The Ritual (either movies or books).

Adding on since this is my first audiobook, I am enjoying it more than I expected. I have been getting a little distracted way easier though, and if I zone out or want to double check something I'll flip back through the pages. Which is obviously not that easy with audio. But all in all so far so good! One tip I have for a new audiobook reader, although I realize this might be different on Spotify - Iβve never used that and only use Libby, is hit that bookmark button every so often. Think of it as the old days of writing on a computer before it automatically saved every so often on its own (thatβs what my gmail does anyhow). I still have to remind myself to do this after I have a bad experienceβ¦. it never fails that somehow I accidentally βslide/skip aheadβ in an audiobook without noticing or meaning to. I will put it on to listen to at a later time and be completely lost and have no idea whatβs going on, and thatβs when Iβll look at my phone and realize thereβs no way I can be as far along as I am and Iβll have NO FREAKING IDEA where I came from. Itβs so hard to find my old place. I must have a little bit of a photographic memory because when that occasionally happens on a physical book, I can sort of recall a general idea of where I was in the book based on how much was on the right and left side in my hand, or what sides of the pages I remember reading last, seeing a chapter title on a certain page, etc. With audiobooks, I typically canβt remember any specific thing sticking out that I can easily navigate back to audio wise. So for me, that bookmark button is like a βsaveβ button. It will at least get me back to the most recent time I hit it and I can try to make my way from there. This happened to me last week. I must have been at 60% through a book and the next time I wanted to listen to the book again, had no idea what anyone was talking about and realized I was at flipping 99% π©π€¦π»ββοΈ I had not saved once in that book, I ended up listening to multiple sections multiple times. It took almost a half hour to find the place that I feel like I maybe came from. I wish there was a place to prevent accidental scrolling. My phone screen turns black when itβs not being used in my pocket, but then if it gets tapped in my pocket, the little pop up menu at the bottom of my phone shows my audio player settings and itβs so easy to accidentally drag that button somewhere else. TL;DR - Use the bookmark button so you donβt lose your place in audiobooks

+1 for the bookmark button being a lifesaver! Also I definitely zone out and sometimes just restarting a chapter does the trick.

I finished Almost Surely Dead by Amina Akhtar. I gave it 3 stars on GR. I think it was a first reads pick from some month. I liked it but the 'twists' were super obvious and I am not sure if it was intentional but if it was supposed to be more shocking, then the author didn't do a good job being subtle, lol. I also felt like the ending was way too rushed, which was why I didn't rate it a bit higher. I did enjoy reading something with South Asian culture in it though.

I just found out you can listen to audio books on spotify?? That's a game changer for the gym. I've never done the audio book thing but I want to give this a shot. The only problem is it's 15 hours free a month with premium which I'm assuming isn't a ton. How does that work? Does each book have a set number of hours it takes to finish or does it go by how fast you listen to it? I believe it goes by how long they have the book listed for. You can finagle the playback speeds. If I am listening for enjoyment I can usually stream around 1.5x. That helps a lot with the 15 hour limit.

Iβm reading The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry right now. Iβm excited because for the first time this year, I found a book to fit a prompt for two of my challenges at once (Buzzword - character name, and ICYMI 2014 Challenge). Iβm about 1/3 through and Iβm enjoying it. The cover says itβs also a movie, so I looked it up and the main character is played by Kunal Nayyar, who played Raj on The Big Bang Theory. I love to be able to picture the characters in my head who I know play the character in the movie/show, and thereβs several famous actors/actresses in this movie, so that makes it more fun for me as I read it. Iβm also looking forward to watching the movie when Iβm done.

Late to the party as always.
February reads: After I Do - Taylor Jenkins Reid . 3/5. Not my favorite by the author. Overnight Guest -heather Gudenkauf. 4/5. Kidnapping mystery (physical violence, pregnancy loss and SA warning) The honey donβt list by Christina Lauren. 5/5 hallmark movie about falling in love with the βwrongβ person. Forever, Interrupted- Taylor Jenkins Reid. 5/5, bittersweet story about how the love of a lifetime can affect you, no matter how short it is. Inheritance - Nora Robertβs. 4/5. Paranormal love story about a generations long curse and an attempt to break it. Super easy read, entirely not believable and I canβt wait for the next in the series to be released. They Never Learn - Layne Fargo. 4/5. Murder mystery with a co-plot about self realization and those who choose to love murderers.
So far in March: The In Between by Hadley Vlahos (social media hospice nurse) 4/5. I lost a few family members in the past 2 years and this was an attempt at processing. The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. 8 million stars out of 5 per normal. Before I let go by Kennedy Ryan. 5/5. A story about what happens when pregnancy loss, overwhelming grief, and clinical depression happen in a relationship and the after-effects. Trigger warnings for traumatic pregnancy loss, infant death, suicide discussions. The summer getaway by Susan Mallery. Hallmark palate cleanser after before I let Go. Love story about finding your true self. Before we were strangers by Renee Carlino. 4/5 College sweethearts break apart around graduation and go on with their lives but never really get over one another. A chance subway sighting and Craigslist missed connection post bring them back together. All the good people here by Ashley Flowers. 5/5. Child abductions/murders mystery (SA warning-itβs not described in any detail just noted on certain victims) and a reporter who tried to solve the case to figure out what happenedr to her childhood bestie.
Up next is An American Marriage by Tayari Jones on a friends recommendation. I didnβt even read the summary. I am also going to stream The Frozen River by Ariel Lawthon on Spotify.

So many times I'm just listening along and realize I haven't been paying attention and have to go back. Also be careful if your audio automatically starts playing in your car or your kids may hear about dildos ππ€¦π»ββοΈ (in my defense this wasn't even a spicy book, it was a thriller, lol)

I read Listen For the Lie and gave it 3.5 stars. It was fine, nothing great.
I also just finished Do Not Disturb by Freida McFadden. I've read most of her books but this wasn't a favorite. 3 stars. The final twist did get me though.
Now I'm finishing The Mystery Writer by Sulari Gentill and I'm starting The Stranger which is Kiersten Modglin's newest. I also just got Kenan Thompson's audiobook and I'm excited for that.

Wow, Kunal Nayyar isn't who I would have pictured for the main character, I pictured him older. IMDb says itβs on Hulu! The only thing Iβm a little bothered with is even after reading the synopsis and knowing thereβs a good chance you know the ending of the book before you really even read the story, the book cover of kindle version Iβm reading (and the cover on IMDb) shows the movie tie in and itβs a scene from the movie and itβs a clear spoiler and Iβm like really? Of all the images you could have used for the book, they had to go with that? Still looking forward to reading this one and watching the movie! Iβm glad you get a chance to watch it knowing you loved the book β€οΈ

TL;DR - Use the bookmark button so you donβt lose your place in audiobooks I never thought to do this, and I love falling asleep listening to whatever book I'm reading. I use a sleep timer but I still have such a hard time figuring out where I left off before falling asleep. I'm going to start doing this. Thanks!

Right now on the TikTok shop for Blind Date With A Book, thereβs a 50% off coupon. Iβm trying it out. It was like $10 with taxes and free shipping! You choose the genre and tea vs hot chocolate and they ship you a surprise. It sounded fun! I picked psychological thriller, so Iβll report back when it arrives.

Just a heads up, the male narrator of Butcher and Blackbird is Joe Arden, the one who is coming under a lot of fire for manipulative business practices and inappropriate contact with women. I believe the author might have said that she's pulling her audiobook offline for right now, but I can't remember.

Good for the author for doing that, that would suck so much for a newish book.

I finished a couple of books. I finished my fluff read a couple of nights ago, My Lucky Charm. And I finished The Obelisk Gate today and grabbed the third book in that trilogy to start tomorrow. I'm enjoying this series. Sometimes it drags a bit, but ultimately it's pretty good.

I finished Listen for the Lie and really liked it. It was a solid 4 star read for me.
I also read The Longest Race by Kara Goucher, which is a memoir/expose of her time with Nike. It was my first 5 star read of the year. It was great, if infuriating.
Iβm about 1/3 through The Mystery Writer now and Iβm enjoying it.
