We've taken DS hiking since he was a literal infant and now at 11 he still bitches about it all the time. But we try to make it fun; geocaching helps. We are not sports people but he does like to go for walks, toss a ball around in the yard, run on the treadmill, and swim Whenever I hear someone mention hiking, I still have private thoughts that it is the worst.

I don’t really let my big kid have any SM on her phone, but the annoying part of the iPhone is that if they have downloaded an app once, and you remove it, they can just go back and download it without permission (someone can tell me if I’m just an idiot and doing something wrong here). So instead of having to monitor whether she’s redownloading apps, I just put their time limit to 1 minute. Pretty sure she also sees plenty of tiktok videos on YouTube anyway, but whatever. I am under no illusions that my kid doesn't sometimes see tiktok videos when chatting with certain friends. But I took away a bunch of her contacts when I found out shitty stuff was going down in the group text, so there's that too... Group chats are where the bullshit has gone down here. Also your kid doesn't even had to have said anything. They can be added to chats willy nilly. I hate that shit.

A girl was saying some really horrible things about another kid that just had a tragedy happen so they took her out of the chat and she told the school that the kids were bullying her. Dd who was added but literally only talked Roblox and a tv show on the chat of course had her name in the bullying investigation because she was on the chat

Second grade girls do not need Stanley tumblers. I just had a mom tell me that she got her second grader a Stanley because she didn’t want her daughter to get bullied for having a target brand tumbler.

Our theatre program does this too. For their main stage show (so not all) they schedule a 2pm weekday performance for field trip groups. It made me go huh. Same. But ours is 10 am on a weekday. So he pretty much misses a day of school. But they get to perform to school groups that don’t have field trip budgets to do much in the way of arts so it’s pretty cool. Meh. It’s two days each school year. I’m ok with it. It was surprising to me. So was the tech week schedule.

All that "any physical activity is good" is all fine and dandy.
When they are little how would that translate? Other than me organizing some physical activity or someone else doing it. So, I let someone else do it and I sit to the side and play on my phone. It's not a big issue. Maybe you are a very active family, and you handle it another way. Great. Maybe you don't care about physical activity at all. That's great for you too.
I don't find it odd at all to care what my kid is doing during their free time. That's my literal job as a parent, as I see it. No one was forced or in tears. My children and I are very close. I would know they would hate something probably before they did. I know what my kids like and what they don't. They talk to me all the time since they started talking. They have a lifetime of being a couch potato if that is what they end up choosing to do. If they end up in therapy because they had to choose a physical activity of their choice when they were kids, I am ok with that.
They are both shaping up to be very well-rounded individuals and that's all we ever wanted for them.

Thank goodness our school has alternatives to gym requirements! If you complete two seasons of a sport in HS that counts as your gym credit. Marching band counts as a sport (and an art), along with color guard, cheer, dance. They also have strength and conditioning for those who prefer to lift, and lifestyle fitness. They try to reach everyone at their level instead of just traditional gym. I believe that's how they do it here. You could also do something out of school altogether like if you were in a rock-climbing club or something.

DD1 did track a few years ago and at one of the first practices I saw her sitting alone in the field looking pained. I ran over to her and asked if she was ok. She said “No. I’m sweating and I don’t like that”. So sports have been a tough go for her, lol. This is why I was a swimmer. I pitied my friends who had to play tennis in 95 degree heat, 100% humidity and blazing sun. My husband and I love baseball. I spend a lot of time considering how baseball players have to be athletically good at the game and be able to stand sweating profusely. Dog days of summer, full sunshine, LONG PANTS. Nope.

My kid won’t even carry her backpack let alone a forty pound stanley water jug thingie.

My second grader has a Stanley. She asked for it for Christmas and was gifted it by my BIL. It was $30 and she was due for a new water bottle anyway. Do Stanley bicep curls count as moving your body? If so, win-win.

But then also they need the little straw cap things for their Stanley too. That’s a whole other little accessory that they all have.

I think the bigger issue is me trying to figure out how to navigate the pressure to have all of these trendy and expensive items at such a young age. My older DD does not care at all. But my younger one, who is 7, sees all of the other girls her age with these things and feels left out if she doesn’t have the Stanley and the Nike Air Max’s. It’s mind-boggling to me that this is happening at such a young age now.

My 3rd grader wants to buy a Stanley with her chore money. It's her money, but we're only going to show her the cheaper knockoff versions. I don't think she'll want to carry it with her to school once she realizes how heavy it could be. But we need her to drink more water anyway, so whatever it takes (within reason)

In my area, band is one of the most intense and most time commitment things you can do. I am so thankful each and every day, my DD quit band before high school. B is currently in orchestra and has decided he also wants to do band next year. TWO music classes, plus his current sports commitments. This kid is insane.

I got my DD1 purple Kiziks (she asked for them) and she stopped wearing them because some girls called them knockoff Skechers. I was confused by this insult, but not important. I gave my whole "it makes me sad that this is what you and your friends seem to value highly and what they said was super snobby", etc. Not sure if it had an impact, but she did wear them that day!

Speaking of Stanleys, SNL’s skit Big Dumb Cup (follow up to Big Dumb Hat) had me laughing so hard.

I don’t like the design of Stanley cups personally. my only issue is the over consumption around reusable bottles of any kind. But like to each their own.
I still use my Nalgene bottles from years ago. I have 3. One of them is always in the dish washer. I saw a video about those hospital pitchers bc I used my Kaiser one at home for a while too.
