We are on vacation which we always plan for the first week of August. But I feel like it’s bittersweet because it means summer break is almost over and soon we will be back to the craziness of work, school and stress.

I messed up with DD2's allergist appointment and thought it was today. It's actually tomorrow. I'm very embarrassed.

MH reported back to work today so it definitely feels like summer is on the downswing. I have slowly been purchasing school supplies for DD3. Those with older kids- do your middle/high schools publish school supply lists? Our doesn't so their supply shopping is always just my best guess.

We're not quite there, but I do know they have a list because it's on the district website.

My littlest is going into K this year and I’m working my best to mask my anxiety about it. He is ready, but I need to figure out me and this house.

No, there is no pre-school summer supply list for middle school IME, but a few of his teachers did ask for some specific things that were tough to find by September. I'm going to make an educated guess and over-buy a bit, then return what he doesn’t need (I realize that's a privilege many families don't have)

Ours posts a MS and HS list but it’s very basic, pencils, colored pencils, a binder etc. with the caveat that individual teachers may have their own supply lists. Also, hi y’all! I’m trying to jump back in here now that I’m in a better place mentally.

It’s not nearly as extensive as elementary school lists.

I just submitted my first job application in…let’s just say a long time. And it’s very last minute for the position and if I get it, it will turn my family’s life upside down.
I don’t know if I should be afraid that I will get an interview or afraid that I won’t get an interview. 🥴
I’ll keep you all posted!

Yeah our middle school around here has some similarities to elementary but since they change classes the individual teachers can have different needs. It was really crazy pants the year each subject wanted a 1 inch binder. Um standard student backpacks don't hold 6, 1 inch binders. They Backed down when the saw and realized the insanity. By then a heck of a lot of binders had been purchased so they tried to make classroom space for some binder storage (no lockers not even in high school) I do know alllll the teachers beg for kleenex around here. Especially in the fall winter. Middle school some teachers put deodorant on the list for kids to keep in their backpacks. Cause right after lunch recess is stank lol

My sis would tell you that's nuts. She says teaching has become extra difficult in the last few years and that's not cause of covid. But maybe it's kinda like the old scrolls of Aristotle complaining about kids nowadays-with the same complaints of adults about kids behaviors existing similarly thru the eons. teachers may lean toward saying teaching gets harder every year. But good luck. We need good teachers so badly.

Those with older kids- do your middle/high schools publish school supply lists? Our doesn't so their supply shopping is always just my best guess. The teachers give the kids lists after school starts, which is frustrating because even though we start early it's usually slim pickings The middle school supplies have been especially ridiculous, with teachers wanting binders with specific numbers of tab dividers, folder types, etc, rather than creating opportunities to teach kids to organize on a way that works for them. When DS1 was in middle school they literally got graded on binder organization by some teachers 🙄 And I'm sure there were some kids whose families struggled to get all the ridiculous supplies. That shouldn't effect a 12 year olds grades We don't even have teacher assignments or class schedules yet. School starts in 2 weeks. If we're lucky we'll find out next week. I just got the letter Mon letting me know DS2 is in morning preschool (and got a supply list different than the one on the website 🙃). I can't imagine the scramble now for families that need to line up before/after care

One of my favorite parts of vacation: my own private happy hour. Kids are showered and watching their shows, H is hanging out with his parents deciding what to pick up for dinner. And I am sitting on our balcony with a drink.

I think our middle schools are switching to clear backpacks/no backpacks allowed during the day (like in your locker in the morning and stay there until the end of the day). Not sure how I feel about that.

Not sure how I feel about that. It's mostly creating a false sense of security, so I get it When DS1 was in middle school they only allowed the kids to carry a cinch sack with essentials and go to their lockers between classes for books/binders. It was pretty obnoxious. They claimed the classrooms were too crowded for backpacks. Magically that was no longer an issue with Covid and they wouldn't give them lockers 🤦♀️

It was pretty obnoxious. They claimed the classrooms were too crowded for backpacks. Magically that was no longer an issue with Covid and they wouldn't give them lockers 🤦♀️ They tried to do the cinch bags at our middle school last year too! They gave them to every student for free, and I appreciate what they were trying to do, but the quality was terrible and they kept falling apart. My DD went through 3 bags before switching to a similar looking bag that was much better quality. I think by winter they had given up. I haven't heard anything about it yet for this year. I don't think they had to bring books to class very often though - just their chromebooks, and a notebook and binder. I know they had a workbook for their I&S classes, but I don't remember my daughter carrying traditional textbooks around. For grades K-6 we just pay a general supply fee and the district purchases all the school supplies needed for the year. Last year was the first year (when my oldest DD started 7th) that I got to purchase supplies. I cannot remember if we got a list before school started or not though. Our district does not publish teacher assignments/schedules until the Friday before classes begin. We do a staggered start, but kids begin on a Wednesday or Thursday of the week. I don't want school to start. I want another month or so of summer. We have our annual vacation next week and as much as I love it, it really signals the end of summer for me.

I love it! If it wasn’t for the fact that I’ve been using the same REI duffel forever and it’s still going strong after traveling all over the world, I’d buy it. A good duffel is invaluable. ETA: My duffel has the backpack straps too. They are invaluable for off-the-beaten-path travel!

Oh shit. The school I was hoping to get a position at has already filled the job, but I just received an offer for an interview at a different school. It’s farther away, so if it happens, I’ll be scrambling for childcare. This is getting real. 😳

Something about making lunches is harmful to my soul lol. The free lunches is going to be amazing. My kids ARE gone all day even during the summer because I don't have the luxury to keep them home while I work. But letting the oldest just get picked up/dropped off by the bus is much nicer. Of course, in 2 years (wtf is time), the twins will be going to Kindergarten and I'll probably be packing lunches because they are autistic and extremely picky. So, I'll enjoy the nonpacking while it lasts.

Not sure how I feel about that. Our middle and high schools require clear backpacks. I hate it. Their backpacks are so heavy without lockers- a chromebook, notebooks, etc. I found an older version of a Vera Bradley backpack on their clearance last year and it's the only backpack we've had- since moving to the clear ones- to last a whole school year. Our average prior to this was THREE per year. So wasteful. Apparently Vera Bradley discontinued the clear backpacks though. So I'm assuming we're back to 3 again this year.
