Oh. OH. I'd forgotten that. And her comments about Maxine in the same article say nothing about Maxine being the main draw. Only that she'll also be speaking. Huh. HUH. Also Tamika: "I think that right now, no one can deny that Bernie Sanders is probably one of the most powerful U.S. senators ... on progressive issues, women’s issues, mobilizing millennials. He is really in line with the principles of the Women's March." It really bothers me that as it stands, Bernie will overshadow the other speakers. He has proven eminently capable of holding his own damn rallies. Why is he co-opting this one? I know that several of the leaders of the March are gung ho about him and I don't think there is anything wrong with that. But centering the event around him is ridiculous and counter-productive.

after the Women's March in January, there was a lot of criticism that white voices trying to support WOC overshadowed the voices of the WOC and that that was counterproductive. So choosing a white man as one of the main voices of the Women's Conference, to me, seems tone deaf. edit to fix a word

So choosing a white man as one of the main voices of the Women's Conference, to me, seems tone deaf. I'm bothered by the argument that by focusing so much on Bernie, we're the ones overshadowing the WOC who are speaking. ![O_o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/browraise.png) Okay. I went back and reviewed their facebook page, b/c I follow them and see a ton of their updates. I couldn't remember seeing any big announcements about Maxine being there before this. I found one post saying that Maxine and a half dozen others would be speaking, with a link to an article highlighting Amber Tamblyn, and another article saying Maxine would be attending. That's it. Nothing about her headlining. are they making that argument? I'm not

Also, after doing more reading on Women's Convention, Maxine Waters is the headliner. Bernie is just the opener. That makes me feel a little better about the whole thing, but I'm still pretty furious they couldn't find a woman to fill the slot. Apparently they asked Clinton, Warren, and Harris and all were unable to slot in. And their general speaker line-up is pretty fantastic. I just wish they could have found someone other than Bernie for the headline. A WOMAN to begin with, but if it had to be a man, at least a man with a stronger record of supporting women, repro rights, etc. One of the organizers was lashing out on twitter yesterday and saying that everyone complaining was silencing WOC who organized because they released the exact same press about Waters that they did for Sanders. That is not true. If you look at what they released about Waters, it isn't even clear that she is speaking, let alone attending. It talks about using her slogan and shit, but nothing about her being a speaker, let alone a keynote. And from what I saw as of last night, she had not responded to any of those criticisms that the Women's March themselves promoted Sanders more than they promoted Maxine Waters.

*snip* Part of me is honestly wondering if the GOP is going to kick all of this really unpopular stuff that is on their agenda to Trump to handle via EOs, then eventually 25th amendment him out of office (see that as far more likely than impeachment--dementia is one thing, treachery is another), and they can blame him for doing all the shitty stuff and pretend their hands are clean. That's what I've been thinking since the start. ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png)

Are you guys following the women boycotting Twitter thing today, over Rose McGowan being banned? I don't know how effective it will be, but I'm staying off Twitter today anyway.
MH says there is a lot of chatter on Twitter about how of course women are mobilizing to boycott after a white woman was silenced, but no such activism has occurred in support of WOC. Wondering what others think.
Also, my brother in law is crusading against Facebook because of their lukewarm response and general inaction against fake news on the site, and is promoting a mass account delete on the 19th. I'm considering it, but it's so hard because it's a primary mode of communication for some of my social groups. Have you all heard about this?
In general, I do want to do more to force Facebook and Twitter to take more responsibility.

I know there are definitely more serious things to be worried about today than who's headlining the Women's Convention, but I feel like it's the only thing where I have any ability to influence the outcome. Trump and GOP are going to do whatever the hell they want. I'm furious about the killing the CRS payments, but we all know what that means. And there is nothing to be done. Congress will do nothing. Part of me is honestly wondering if the GOP is going to kick all of this really unpopular stuff that is on their agenda to Trump to handle via EOs, then eventually 25th amendment him out of office (see that as far more likely than impeachment--dementia is one thing, treachery is another), and they can blame him for doing all the shitty stuff and pretend their hands are clean. He's already kicking all of it to them!

While I know it was directly prompted by McGowan getting banned for calling out her abusers, I interpreted it as a general call against how Twitter has treated women writ large, including ignoring threats against female users for a loooong time while protecting trolls, abusers and racists. (Let alone baffoon presidents.) Facebook would be impossible for me to delete permanently but I understand the sentiment.

Speaking of the dark web, I had a customer ask yesterday for help finding it so she could research secret space programs, all the things the smithsonian has locked up in secret vaults, etc. I could not help her.

You are taking me back to my 'monitoring the public internet terminals' days. Them: "Can you tell me my password?" Me: "no?"

The call for a twitter boycott has been simmering for a long time from a number of angles. Gamergate led to several prominent commentators ditching the platform. Lindy West published an op-Ed in the Guardian explaining why she left back in January. amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/jan/03/ive-left-twitter-unusable-anyone-but-trolls-robots-dictators-lindy-westOn a tangential note, I hate the way the concept of free speech has been warped by the alt right. Grrrrrrrrrr.

I can't keep up with the tweeters anyway, so the thought of claiming that I am boycotting Twitter is a bit ridiculous. I know others here are far more accomplished in that regard.
