And I also loved Aya Nakamura, we love her at home. There was a huge (stupid) controversy about her performing her performing because she wasn’t “french” enough (she’s Black French Malian, grew up outside Paris. I loved her performance. she was fabulous. Eta and her dancers and outfit*

Is there a way to watch a replay of the ceremony if you don’t have cable or Peacock?

I’ll be watching tonight. Can’t wait for the weirdness! My DD is currently making feta dip and veggies(Greek). DS and I will do pigs in a blanket(American) and then we have croissants and macarons; French, obviously.

caer Bluebird my 40th birthday present to myself was buying a yearling Connemara/TB/Dutch Warmblood cross earlier this year. Hopefully he will be quite sensible when the time comes! I’m in Canada so obv cheering for them, but really just want everyone to have safe, successful rounds 🥰 Impressive! My days of starting babies are definitely over, but I hope yours gets that good Connemara brain! Quoting to get all the horse/eventing people: what are your thoughts on the dressage news about Charlotte Dujardin? —former super amateur eventing rider (as in, maxed at novice bc I’m a chicken.)

I watched the video and thought it was gross. As an eventer, I carried a whip and wore spurs almost every day so I’m not automatically opposed but she was WAY excessive in her use of the whip and the horse was obviously terrified. I was pretty horrified by the video.

copperboomVery disappointed to see, but not surprised. I worked at a high end hunter jumper barn years ago and the shit I saw was disgusting. Dressage is also known to be extremely problematic. Due to my current line of work, I largely give victims coming forward the benefit of the doubt regarding when they choose to disclose abuse. I’ve certainly done problematic things in the past with my horses, (i.e. side reins when lunging, draw reins, bitting up, etc) but for several years now I’ve taken an entirely different approach with my horses and it’s made a world of difference. I’ll never go back and will continue to be an advocate for horses. They deserve better.

So here is what I’m trying to understand. It seems each performance happened at different locations on the river. Did they perform just once, multiple times? Because so many people would miss performances.

The spectator's in Paris watched on screens just like us if they weren't close to the performance.

I always feel like the opening ceremony is too artsy for me and like I just don’t get it. So I really just watch for the parade of nations. It’s one of my favorite things ever. I actually like the boat parade idea a lot. I’m super bummed it’s raining because it would have been even better in clear weather. And I’m mad that NBC removed the population of the countries. I love to see it along side the number of athletes to get perspective.

The masked guy on the roof tops reminded us of Assassin's Creed. I felt like it started off strong and then it lulled and we got bored. By the end it felt like it was really dragging That and the fashion show went on longer than they should have.

Oh and the water horse. I loved it, but it took too long. Now, this is understandable because it was like 4 miles on the river or something Where normally you have a shorter track.
Still loving the Marie’s and the band and blood.

Like my Google is on fire while I try to figure out where countries are. And I, without fail, get choked up at the countries that have like 4 athletes and they are waving their flags just so hard

Any of my horse friends watching the dressage? Michael Jung’s test was gorgeous. I didn’t see Collett’s test but it was the highest scoring test ever at the Olympics, must have been amazing!

I hate when they hype up an athlete so much in the commentary and then bad things happen

Like it’s impressive how the big countries send a huge delegation but there is something so inspiring about the smaller delegations. Like knowing how much those athletes mean to their country and people. I also enjoy the geography lesson of the parade.
