I never figured out a way to turn off cell data to the phones so I just collect all electronic devices (and computer/game station power cords, etc) and they get them back when the chores are done. I've thought about that but I'll be at the office while they're at home and we don't have a land line. Maybe I'll have to incentivize good behavior instead. remove SIM cards and change the wifi password?

The teenagers are home for the summer and while we're not treating them like the indentured servants they claim we are, we do expect them to do some chores while home. This morning I told them that if the chores were not done that I'd be turning the internet options off on their cell phones. Um, is that something that I can actually do and how? Or what other consequences can I have? Too old to go on time out, too young to take away driving privileges. If you’re on iPhones and have a Family set up, I used to turn off every app on SD’s phone except calls and texting. ETA. I think it was “downtime.” I switched that function on so all the fun shit got turned off easily without going through each app.

I use Screen Time settings on B's iPhone and you can set time limits for certain apps as well. I've also been using Bark and they have an option to disable all internet/apps until you choose to resume them.

I had to drop my kid off at a dorm this morning. It's band camp, but still. the summer camp I went to from 10-15 was held at college campuses and man did I feel cool living in a dorm for a week. 😅

I really love the way my 3YO says “tobbler” instead of toddler. 😍 I miss cute toddler words. FS1 used to call grapes bubbles and DS2 called lollipops- pollywogs. Miss those cute little silly words.

Did y'all know the anti-vaxx crowd is drifting over into "sunscreen is worse for you than the sun" territory? I just recently got into an argument/debate with a friend about this, and now I feel like I'm seeing it everywhere. I managed to not call my friend a fucking idiot to her face, but I did come on a little strong because I was so shocked by her ridiculous claims.

But also, my husband has been having annual skin checks for years with a dermatologist - yet ignores my pleas to wear sunscreen (he works outside most days). Dude, there is something that could help prevent skin cancer.

I heard a mom going on about this at DS’s baseball game. Like wtaf. I didn’t engage because I probably would not have been nice. As a ginger with lupus and a family history of melanoma, I have a lot of dogs in that particular fight.

Ugh, summer really kicks up my working mom guilt. I need one of those jobs with summers off so I can take my kids to the pool, zoo, whatever all day instead of just giving them chore lists or sending them to a sitter.

I'd love to send them photos of the aftermath of my dad's recent basal cell carcinoma removal, or maybe they would like to go with him to his daily radiation appointments and then they can see how "dangerous" sunscreen is vs the cancer it causes.

Yesterday I did my bi-annual photo dump. I have 20 years worth of organized Google Drive photo folders broken down by vacation or years so I can find any photo very quickly. Yesterday I uploaded everything off my phone from November through now into their folders then deleted them off the phone so I currently have nothing in my phone. Took me 4 hours and was worth it. DH thinks I'm crazy and is like "Why don't you just let icloud back it up automatically??" Because none of that is organized, it would store crap photos that I meant to delete, and it would leave thousands on my phone. I need my way lol I am not saying to abandon your way but google photos does what you are describing. It deletes them off of your phone for you and all. In the beginning I was doing the folders thing but I found it not needed because I can just go into google photos and type birthday and all birthday photos come up. "Birthday and Caleb" and they all come up. "Caleb near birthday cake" and they all come up. They are in date order. Again just type any search like you are googling and it pulls the photos for you. It takes maybe a couple of minutes. I do not use the cloud. You can also tell google photos which photos not to back up like I do not back up screen shots. I do not back up my bitmoji folder for example. It deletes the pictures that are uploaded off of your phone. You can have it do it automatically or you can choose when you want to back up. I highly recommend it for iphone uses since Apple has the "you are almost out of storage" glitch they refuse to fix. Just an FYI to anyone that may not be aware. You can also put google photos on your computers and put pics there or you can back up your PC pics. It's all seamless for me.

DS is younger than your older kids, I believe, but he's going into 6th and this is my first summer where I've only semi-scheduled him. So even though *I* can't be the one to bring him, I have him doing a bunch of random part-time or occasional summer fun options for kids that we've never been able to do bc we needed full-time care. Like the parks & rec dept has weekly tennis lessons and the library has a variety of random events and there's all these other things all over the place. I plan to car pool with other parents or have him get himself to the things by walking or biking. He's pumped because he gets more time at home, but also gets to do fun new things during the summer.

This is us too. Same age. I found a middle school afternoon “camp” in the next city over that is like 12:30-6 which he and a friend can bike to so I signed him up for a couple of weeks of that. And he’s also doing mid morning tennis lessons that he can walk to. It feels like a big turning point. Although next year I’m signing him up to be a camp counselor in training at baseball camp and then the following year he can get paid to be at camp. Playing the long game.

My brother had a Hodgkin's lymphoma and went through 8 months of chemo and several years later was talking too me about wanting to ensure he never had dangerous chemicals in his body again. He smoked so I thought he meant that and was enthusiastic about him quitting. NOPE. He meant his chemotherapy drugs. The ones that saved his life. It's really hard when these ideas permeate into someone's way of thinking.

DD1 is doing her lemonade stand this weekend for Alex's Lemonade Stand. We do one every few years--but I forget how much WORK it is. And trust, DD1 is doing a lot of the work--along with my niece; but her expectations vs. reality is a lot. (when she was 3 she just did lemonade) at age 7 she added ice tea, at 8 she added homemade lemonade and Arnold Palmers. At 11 she added three different types (and one was always homemade). This year she is trying to make homemade Strawberry Lemonade AND homemade lavender lemonade.
She also designs all her artwork/posters and this year plans on printing 3d printed objects to sell along with crocheted lemons. Again her ambition forgets that there are just so many hours in the day.
I definitely am looking forward to Sunday night.

This week has been nuts. My kids haven’t seen their dad all week, I’ve been too tired to parent, and they’ve gone feral. I’m glad we made it to the weekend.

Phoenix his 117 yesterday. Luckily my house was just 114 But Golly geeze
Spent all day it seemed doing dishes after taking grandson to the pool. Their dishwasher broke and was smoking while full of yucky dishes. Found a plastic bowl melted on the heating element. Got that all cleaned up and ran a cleaning thing thru the dishwasher and saved the day
washer repair guy from home warranty had come back while i was away. It's been 2 weeks waiting on parts including a new Frame or something cause somehow a mount for the tub broke and isn't fixable. Gets parts, shows up starts taking washer apart and finds more things worn out broken that he can't replace.
Come home to find my washer being held together with duct tape. I can use it if I dare. Which I've dared 3x since it originally started leaking water into the tub when machine not on.
We shall see but repair guy is putting in for home warranty to pay for new washer. Basically I'll find what I want and they'll pay a certain price toward it. They paid for last washer.
