Read First Lie Wins yesterday, thought it was great. I think someone else said it up-thread, but Thriller-light is a perfect description! I need more of these, most thrillers today are just too much for me, not enjoyable. Agree, I need "Murder She Wrote" level of thriller, not Law & Order SVU.

I finally finished the slog that was Where the Dead Wait by Ally Wilkes - it was not good. It's an arctic horror book, but I found the jump between timelines confusing at time (due to how they were written), the main character honestly wasn't very interesting, it dragged on and just wasn't great. Do not recommend. Next up is That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon as a light hearted read before my next heavier read for my book club. Oh Where the Dead Wait was on my list so that's good to know Usually I would recommend still reading it, because maybe you would like it - but no lol a good Arctic horror is Dark Matter by Michelle Paver (I think).

I’m about 100 pages into Prom Mom and just don’t know if I can continue. It’s short so I feel like I could but also they are all terrible so far

I finished Bride tonight. I enjoyed it but Ali Hazelwood's sex scenes are so cringy. This one is predicted to be an Aardvark pick for March. I'm on the fence about it.

I know Amazon usually does Prime Day and Black Friday deals on paperwhites but does anyone recall if they do anything like that in the spring? My 14 yo daughter has always been ride or die for physical books but realized she'd have more room in her suitcase if she took an e-reader on spring break. She can just use one of our kindles but if there's a good deal on paperwhites I might get her one for Easter.

I’m about halfway through The Phoenix Crown by Kate Quinn and Janie Chang. I literally was THIS CLOSE to DNF finish it, at around 70 pages. I was skimming it so much and not taking in anything. Moving my eyes over the words and ending up at the bottom of the page and not remembering a word of what I had read. I don’t know why but I couldn’t get into it and just didn’t care. Too many characters and I didn’t care who they were. Well for whatever reason I decided to just keep going because historical fiction is one of my favorite genres (and I love Kate Quinn), and something just shifted, and things started to become more clear and I started focusing and paying attention. I’m now just about halfway through and I’m really enjoying it!
WTH though. Reading is so weird sometimes. Like, I could have just as easily closed this book up and never looked back. Now I’m very invested and can’t wait to see what happens.

I got to Dune and wondered if I somehow ended up on a different list 😂 Some BookTok accounts I follow have mentioned Beverly Jenkins recently. I definitely want to check her books out.

I am on the 4th of the Class Mom series, Smells like Tween Spirit. These are the types of reads I need right now between the heavy reads and just IRL in general.

Two disappointing reads for me this week. City Under One Roof started good but I found the main detective pretty annoying and I hate when a thriller forces a love connection in there when it just isn’t needed.
The other book was One For Sorrow by Sarah Denzil. Great story line but again, the main character brought it down.
I gave both 3 stars.

I finished TOG this morning. Whew. I liked a lot of it. Cried through most of the 2nd half of Kingdom of Ash and was just so ready for it be done. Highlights were the interludes of Queen of Shadows, Kingdom of Ash, and the Assassin's Blade.

I finished That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon and I really enjoyed it. It was a light romance/fantasy, with a fun main character and some solid smut (I like open door sex scenes). It's the first in the Mead Mishaps series, and I will definitely be reading more when I want a fun romance with mythical creatures.
Next up is When We Lost Our Heads by Heather O'Neill for my book club - no idea what to expect, but I'm thinking it may be a bit of a heavier read.

I finished Village In The Dark. It was pretty good and tied up everything from the first book well. The ending was really good until the actual conclusion, when she didn't include much about how it wrapped up. I mean, it was easy enough to know, but it was kind of left out. But other than the rushed ending I did really enjoy it. I'll be curious to see if the author continues the series.
I'm going to start The Fifth Season and Bride once I finish up my current romcom.

Ooo that's good to know! I've read the first two chapters and I already am hooked. Marie and Sadie are fascinating characters, so I am very curious about where it will go. I'm newer to this book club, but the discussions are always really good, so I'm excited for this one. I think I may buy a paperback copy, because I want to put little tabs on certain parts to help me remember stuff for our book club discussion.

I’m always challenged with characters that were deliberately set up to be hated. But I get what they’re retelling… Knowing what you gravitate towards, I suspect you’ll like it more than me.

I've been chipping away at A Touch of Stardust and just finished it. It's about a fictional aspiring screenwriter who befriends Carole Lombard and Clark Gable during the Gone with the Wind fiasco and the months before Na.z.i Germany invaded Poland. I would have preferred more bluntness about how gross GWTW was; In the first 200 pages there was basically one sentence about how Gable was appalled by the treatment of Black actors on set, but that was it until the last 20 pages.

I finished The Invisible Life of Addie Larue. Very good. I highly recommend it. It was very different than my usual reads but absolutely worth reading.
I just started a book called Rhapsodic. It’s a dark romance/fantasy. I am 50 pages in and I like it a lot so far.

I read The Silent Patient for a FB book club I was going to attempt to participate in. It wasn't bad, but I didn't love it. I think part of the problem is that I'd seen several posts in the group about the mind blowing twists and I was expecting more. Sometimes I appreciate books more when I go in blind.
I mind need something less murdery to cleanse my palate now.

I read Confessions of a Forty-Something F**K Up this week and I really enjoyed it. It was a little Bridesmaid-y (as far as navigating adult relationships while being at different points in life) and Bridget Jones-y, while also being in current times of podcasts and I really liked it. It's apparently the inspiration for the new show, Not Dead Yet, and now I'm going to binge that this weekend.
Next up, I have Meet Me in the Middle, and I'm nervous. I think it's in the enemies to lovers troupe set in DC with peeps on opposite sides of the political field. IDK, I think it'll be a DNF before even starting because I'm so anxious about politics.

I haven't started yet, but it's on my list to read at some point this year.

I finished Fifth Season a couple nights ago. It took me a bit to get into it because I don't love when fantasy books dive right in without giving some decent context/world building. But I kept with it because the reviews were so positive and my friend was the one who recommended it and I trust her knowing what I'd like. I am glad that I did because the world building got much better as it went on. I'm annoyed that it was a cliffhanger ending but I guess that means I'll have to put the next one on my Libby holds, ha. I gave it 4 stars. I really enjoyed it quite a bit. I saw the "twist" (or maybe it wasn't supposed to be a twist?) coming pretty quickly but it didn't bother me.

I actually pre-ordered the paperback of both of these the last time Target had a sale.
