I finished When The Stars Go Dark by Paula McClain. I liked it but felt like the pacing was off and it took me a while to get into it. 3 stars. Oh I listened to this last month. I liked it mostly but I am increasingly struggling with the trope of "rogue detective works for free and without an agency" because it's just soooo unbelievable. I also knew who "did it" pretty quickly which is unusual for me so IDK if it was just really obvious or if I'm getting better at careful reading (I think it was just really obvious). I'd try another one of hers though. I liked the tie in to real events.

Tuesday confession, I'm too old for iCarly and thought that Janette McCurdy was the comedienne from the James Franco roast. Google tells me the comedienne that I had in mind is actually Natasha Leggero. Maybe it's the hairstyle?

I finished The Rosie Project yesterday. It was good.
Today I’m starting our book club’s pick today. It’s a YA book - The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. There are sketches throughout the book from the main character. I’m enjoying it so far.

I probably would have liked it better if it was less flowery. I have been trying not to guess who did it when I read mysteries/thrillers lately because I find that I get too distracted by it and then I don’t focus as much on the book but I get in my head too much. I hadn’t really even considered that the person was someone mentioned in the book rather than a random until she figured it out, haha.

That's so funny- I usually guess wrong or fall for a red herring, so I don't really try too hard. I like to go along for the ride. But for some reason this one jumped out at me so clearly. Probably just a fluke.

I enjoyed Camp Damascus! I just put the March trilogy on hold so those will be my next read. I can't believe I haven't done them yet! March trilogy? I really enjoyed Camp Damascus so I'd be interested in more by this author if you found something good!

I started and finished Bride today. Oops, it has not been my most productive day. 😂 I liked it a lot. Despite its paranormal theme it was sort of cutesy. I liked that about it. It was very much an Ali Hazelwood book which beings me joy.

I think he does kind of oddball romance generally which isn't my thing but I really liked Camp Damascus too!

In the last week I read/listened to 4 of the ACOTAR series and let's just say my family is not happy with me (the amount of time it took). Didn't do the novella, is it worth going back and reading? After A court of Silver Flames I feel like I'm so over Feyre and don't want to read more about her.
Taking a break from fantasy, it just sucks me in too much. Trying to get through Everyone on this Train is a Suspect today, then also have First Lie Wins on audio.

I read The Library at Mount Char the last two nights. I don't remember where I got the recommendation. It was very bizarre and unlike any fantasy/sci-fi I had ever read before, I never could predict where it was going next. It held my interest though, and has me pondering it after I've finished it which is rare for me. I would give it 4 stars.

One of my friends referred to Frost and Starlight as the Hallmark Christmas movie of the series and they weren't wrong. It's a nice breather between Wings and Ruin and Silver Flames. Sets up Silver Flames nicely. I enjoyed it... was it my favorite of the series? No, but I still think it's worth a read.

I finished listening to my first audiobook, "Thank you for Listening". I gave it 3 stars, I liked it. I started listening to "Do No Disturb" but not sure I'll get through it before it comes due.

I think that was one of my highest rated books of 2023.

I just discovered Shari Lapena for good and easy mystery/suspense/thriller reads and I've read 4 of hers over the last few weeks. I needed a switch from Frieda.
Just finished Check & Mate too, the new Ali Hazelwood and it was a solid read, though I don't love late teen/early 20s romance so much anymore as a general choice, but I usually enjoy Hazelwood.
I DNF Apples Never Fall for the 3rd time, but I still have a few days left on Libby to maybe listen on 1.75x or something.

I also recently read it and felt the same! I don't usually get into Sci fi/fantasy but loved this

recent books
First Lie Wins: 4 stars, I really enjoyed it even though it's not my typical genre. Lol I need more just like this one!! (like thriller-lite) The Christmas Wish: 3 stars. Eh. The last 2 books from The Aurelian Cycle series: Flamefall and Furysong. Both got 4 stars. Again a little out of my norm but Fourth Wing had me searching for more dragon books lol. Kinda like Fourth Wing but without the steamy parts Cassandra In Reverse: ugh 2 stars. I finished it because I felt bad I had it so long from the library. But it was too much like The Christmas Wish (like wishing/time travel etc) and just semi annoying.

I find the accent soothing and was able to get into them more.

I've read 4 books I think since my last check-in.
When Stars Collide (Chicago Stars, #9) by Susan Elizabeth Phillips, 3.5 stars rounded down to 3 Simply the Best (Chicago Stars, #10) by Susan Elizabeth Phillips, 3.5 stars rounded down to 3
These two were from an author I always read with my aunt. She passed away a couple of years ago so it felt nostalgic reading them again.
The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood, 3.5 stars rounded up to 4. This was cute and a quick read. I think I finished it in a day. I'll probably read more of hers
The Mystery Writer by Sulari Gentill, 4 stars. I loved this one. At first, I was not sure I was going to be a fan, but then I got into it. There were parts where it dragged and I felt like they could’ve spent more time than they did on the last few chapters, but overall the story was really good. I think I liked it more than the Woman in the Library.

I’m glad you liked it, I t loved her other one!

I just started The Appeal by Janice Hallet. I thought it was new because I saw it in a bookstore recently but apparently it's been out for a few years. I'm only a few chapters in- it has a non-traditional format which I am enjoying
