Here's where we stand on the debt limit deal.
There is a deal. It's fine. This was all a waste of time bc the deal raises the debt ceiling for 2 years, and everything else in the deal is just stuff that would have been negotiated during the appropriations process, which is when this kind of stuff is supposed to be hashed out.
POTUS' major legislative accomplishments remain intact. Manchin stomped his foot and got a big win on permitting. No cuts to Medicare or Medicaid, but there are extended work requirements on certain adults without children. So McCarthy debt ceiling brinksmanship was a pointless stunt that made us look like idiots on the world stage. It has diplomatic and financial ramifications. Just absolute governing malpractice.
House Rules is meeting this afternoon to determine whether and how it goes to the floor.
Kevin, by my count, has lost at least 15 GQP votes so far. The coup caucus is screaming hair on fire because, apparently, they thought they could institute draconian cuts to social programs with Dem control of the Senate and WH just bc they dangled the baby over the balcony.
Some House Progressives will vote against it bc they said they'd oppose any bill that expands work requirements. That's nothing to stress over; Katherine Clark knows how to count votes.

Fourteen more days. Not that I'm counting down or anything. We have 12 days left! Computers aren't coming home anymore, so that feels like a big step.

How is it almost June but also how is school still not done School ends here on Friday. Super weird, but we started two weeks before Labor Day. What's extra weird is that both Thursday and Friday are half days. Thank God for after school daycare, lol.

They have so many random days off in the fall it's insanity. Like in the first 13 weeks of school, I counted 5!! that were a full 5 days a week.

School just ended for us, so kids are at camp this week. Feels early, but we go back early, too. This summer is going to fly by so fast.

I love it in December, but hate it in June. The last couple weeks of school tick by so slowly.

Oh wow. I knew this would happen eventually, I just didn't think it would happen already. I saw some TikToks this weekend about insurance companies in Florida likely to do the same, and how the cost of homeowners insurance has caused mortgages to skyrocket. On the video I saw, the guy said it had gone up over $1000 a month. I can't even imagine. He said FEMA remapped and people who weren't previously in flood zones are now, and mandatory flood insurance is insanely high. I can't imagine trying to come up with any more money a month for living expenses. I feel awful for them because it's not like you can just pick up and move.

We use Nationwide and our particular plan cannot be rescinded even if the company stops issuing new home policies. The agent is a friend of H's and we got a really good deal on our coverage as is. They can raise it, but can't cancel it like a lot of other companies have done.

It's official. Gov Walz signed the legal cannabis bill and MN is now the 23rd state to legalize marijuana.

Insurance rates are insane right now even in places without the more extreme climate change. Our home insurance rates went up $800 a year which felt crazy when I read it but we use an independent agent that we trust and he did the best he could to find the best rate for us. Just nuts.

I got through to my DC offices faster than normal today which tells me constituents are not calling on the budget deal. So this would be a great time to call your representatives and encourage them to support it! House floor vote is expected tomorrow.

McCarthy is a moron, but I am not looking forward to the chaos that will occur when they try to get a new speaker.

We finish this week too. I prefer it to starting after Labor Day. I’m so ready to be done with the school-specific battles.

Kevin says a child only has worth if they have a job? All the boomers we know keep asking when DS(19) is going to get a job and I'm so over it. They're obsessed. Literally every one of them asks every time we talk There's a lot of factors I could go into, but none of it matters. Mind your business boomers!
