Kevin says a child only has worth if they have a job? DH likes to jest about the kids getting jobs… I guess we’ll have to nip that in the bud.

Didn't really help in the end. These people are idiots. Would it have made a difference for Beto? He lost by just under a million votes, so. Possibly. Imagine a post-Roe Texas with Beto instead of Abbott. 🥲

Kevin says a child only has worth if they have a job? All the boomers we know keep asking when DS(19) is going to get a job and I'm so over it. They're obsessed. Literally every one of them asks every time we talk There's a lot of factors I could go into, but none of it matters. Mind your business boomers! Boomers: obsessed with "the worker shortage." Absolutely opposed to immigration.

Here's where we stand on the debt limit deal. There is a deal. It's fine. This was all a waste of time bc the deal raises the debt ceiling for 2 years, and everything else in the deal is just stuff that would have been negotiated during the appropriations process, which is when this kind of stuff is supposed to be hashed out. POTUS' major legislative accomplishments remain intact. Manchin stomped his foot and got a big win on permitting. No cuts to Medicare or Medicaid, but there are extended work requirements on certain adults without children. So McCarthy debt ceiling brinksmanship was a pointless stunt that made us look like idiots on the world stage. It has diplomatic and financial ramifications. Just absolute governing malpractice. House Rules is meeting this afternoon to determine whether and how it goes to the floor. Kevin, by my count, has lost at least 15 GQP votes so far. The coup caucus is screaming hair on fire because, apparently, they thought they could institute draconian cuts to social programs with Dem control of the Senate and WH just bc they dangled the baby over the balcony. Some House Progressives will vote against it bc they said they'd oppose any bill that expands work requirements. That's nothing to stress over; Katherine Clark knows how to count votes. dc2london what are the next steps/timeline for this? I really appreciate you summarizing things for us, what I read on Twitter is hard to piece together, or elsewhere ends up too complicated for my new politics brain. I kind of have a vested interest in this since I'm closing on a house in July and really hoping this deal brings interest rates back down because...woof.

Absolutely opposed to immigration. My oldest (16) searched for a job for MONTHS and had the hardest time finding anything. She's now lifeguarding again because the pools seem to be one of the only places willing to accommodate teenage schedules. I actually have asked at a few places (signs up while I'm shopping or eating somewhere). ALL of them have eye rolled and flat out said that, unofficially, they don't hire teenagers. But "no one wants to work"

The woman who accused Biden of sexual assault in the run up to the 2020 election has defected to Russia.

athn64 Yep. ETA: I can't remember. Was there ever any kind of digging into the incident? All the stories about her defection (that I have read) say her claims were deemed not credible, but I don't remember how that was decided.

enchanted - there were definitely people investigating her claims at the time she made them. As I remember, some people became skeptical when her story changed dramatically over a year after she originally spoke up. Obviously there can be plenty of good reasons why victims trickle truth, but the switch from claims of sexual harassment to physical assault is quite a jump. And of course during the election season there were plenty of articles written about her, including ones that touched on her seeming adoration of Russia via her blog. eta: CW for description of assault ( link) "Over the last year, Reade has altered her public telling of how Biden behaved with her in 1993, as has one of her close friends who has been a key corroborator of Reade's assault allegation. In years past, Reade described reasons for leaving Washington that were unrelated to Biden; she now says she left after being fired from Biden's office as retaliation for reporting sexual harassment. She has also previously described Biden as having been a good boss, sometimes speaking with pride about having worked for him."

But "no one wants to work" We've seen a lot of the same here, so that's one of the factors for DS not working. So many people in the local mom group asking where will hire teenagers and it's pretty much just the local pools The closest he got last summer was Kroger, maybe in the gas station booth outside the store, but they ghosted him. They literally told him they were going to send him a job offer at the interview and he followed up multiple times. My boomer mom poo-pooed that too because Kroger has a union 🙄 You literally can't please boomers

About 50 Democrats bailed the GOP out and saved us from global economic turmoil. The Rule passed. Final passage won't come for a few hours as Republican leadership have to run out the clock on the 72 hour noticing rule.
Apparently Jeffries squeezed some sort of deal out of Mccarthy

Final House votes are expected between 830 and 845 this evening. Leadership are NOT expecting a Motion to Recommit, which will streamline the process (MTR effectively kicks the bill back to committee)

Here's what's happening today on the debt ceiling.
The Senate is about to race to pass this thing, but Senators on both sides of the aisle intend to express their problems with the bill through amendments.
Everyone knows that the Senate HAS to pass the House version of the bill, bc sending an amended version back for the House to vote on would, logistically, blow past the X date.
None of these amendments will get 60 votes (and Schumer and McConnell will make sure they don't). Leadership has an agreement with each of these Senators that they won't hold up the bill as long as they get a vote on their amendments.
So this will slow things down. But if they can convince Rand Paul and Mike Lee not to object to Unanimous Consent, they could have a floor vote tonight. Given the aforementioned Senators' proclivity for being dingbats, we're more likely to see votes sometime tomorrow.
