Here's what's happening today on the debt ceiling. The Senate is about to race to pass this thing, but Senators on both sides of the aisle intend to express their problems with the bill through amendments. Everyone knows that the Senate HAS to pass the House version of the bill, bc sending an amended version back for the House to vote on would, logistically, blow past the X date. None of these amendments will get 60 votes (and Schumer and McConnell will make sure they don't). Leadership has an agreement with each of these Senators that they won't hold up the bill as long as they get a vote on their amendments. So this will slow things down. But if they can convince Rand Paul and Mike Lee not to object to Unanimous Consent, they could have a floor vote tonight. Given the aforementioned Senators' proclivity for being dingbats, we're more likely to see votes sometime tomorrow. When you start your famous podcast on making civics digestible for the masses can I be a guest?

I admit that the debt ceiling debacle is tres confusing for me. Someone on my timeline posted that the whole thing was "unnecessary drama" and a "joke" because the money has already been spent. I know it's not that simplistic and she's otherwise a moron. Is she right though?

I admit that the debt ceiling debacle is tres confusing for me. Someone on my timeline posted that the whole thing was "unnecessary drama" and a "joke" because the money has already been spent. I know it's not that simplistic and she's otherwise a moron. Is she right though? She's not entirely wrong. In terms of raising the debt ceiling, yes, the money is already spent and pretending like they might not raise it was a damaging stunt on the part of the Republicans. Where this all got tied up was in the budget process. The president released a budget for FY 2024 in March. House Republicans didn't release a budget plan until late April. Typically, budget negotiations begin after both Congress and the White House have offered their proposed budget, and those are used as a starting point. While waiting for House Republicans ' budget, POTUS said that he simply would not negotiate on whether or not to lift the debt ceiling because it is, quite simply, non-negotiable. Only the feral cats in the House Freedom Caucus actually want a global economic calamity like the one that would result if the US defaulted on its debts. There's discussion to be had about Biden's insistence that he wouldn't negotiate but the fact of the matter is, he asked to see a budget for months and they just kept grandstanding. So Republicans decided that, if they had to raise the debt ceiling, they were going to insist upon huge budgetary cuts in the name of "fiscal responsibility. "So, instead of simply raising the debt ceiling, releasing a budget, and negotiated appropriations through the normal course of action, they played chicken with the global economy and basically wound up getting exactly what they would have gotten if they dome it the normal way.

I feel like Biden played the debt ceiling game quite well overall. The MAGA folks look like idiots for pushing to default, it’s clear that Kevin doesn’t really control his party in the house, and the Dems got a lot of what they wanted in the budget. Dark Brandon has a decent poker face. Of course, it never should have been a game in the first place, but c’est la vie.

Today is the 102nd anniversary of the Tulsa massacre. We must fight every day for accountability for what white terrorists were allowed to do in broad daylight before a racist justice system.

Biden was playing the long game of old school politics, but that long game makes some in the base very uncomfortable. Personally, I see both sides of this argument. But I also am of the opinion that Joe Biden is damn good at his job.

WhyTF would you want a War of 1812 commemorative license plate??? For a while they were the standard ones that were distributed, not a special requested one.

Yet another thing the US media absolutely insisted was a looming threat that never came to pas Ok so your podcast should have a segment called "things the media was hysterical about" which is just you reading the hysterical headline followed by these updates. I'm just deciding that this podcast is coming soon. I'll help.

I feel like I've lost things in translation, but will this debt Ceiling deal that states student loans will have to start being paid back cancel out the student loan forgiveness for 10k (20k for some) that has been held up in court? Or is that still on the table waiting for court crap? Sorry if I missed it, feeling a bit lost if someone can point me in the right direction No, the debt ceiling does not affect debt cancellation or the new IDR plan. Republicans wanted to use the bill the eliminate those two things, but Biden said no. Yes, we are still waiting on SCOTUS to rule on debt cancellation (this month). Decisions will come out on Thursdays, so it will be 6/8, 6/15 or 6/22. To complicate matters, Congress has tried to use the Congressional Review Act (CRA) to rescind debt cancellation. This type of bill only requires a simple majority. It passed the House on May 24 and passed the Senate this past week. HOWEVER, it is subject to a veto which the President has said he will use. Congress does not have the 2/3 majority required to override his veto so this will fail. Which puts us back to waiting for SCOTUS to rule. Congress was simultaneously addressing the debt ceiling and the CRA on debt cancellation, so it was all a bit confusing.

I don’t know if this exactly fits on this board, but I’m feeling the feels for my little town right now. Our city government page put up a post celebrating Pride and the comments are overwhelmingly positive. Five years ago this would not have happened. This used to be a solid red area and we’ve slowly inched toward purple. I grew up here and it has its faults, but I’m really proud of the way our community has shown up and made progress over the past few years. Other neighboring communities have fallen to the dark(republican) side in local and national politics and we’ve stood up to it.

coffeecake, I know we have so far to go and in a lot of places, we're going backwards, but I love that for your hometown. Progress is happening, even if we don't always see it.

And to be clear, I know there are still plenty of people here who are hateful and don’t agree. But the fact that a post like that went up from the city’s official page and has gotten so much love is a step in the right direction. A few people tried to say something negative and stir the pot, but no one engaged so they left, lol.
