It's bad enough when politicians discuss the immigration status of murder victims, but when the paper of record places no value on a human life we are really absolutely nowhere

byjove, I feel like the DC rat race is very much opt in. We have definitely opted out. I wouldn’t call our pace of life slow exactly, but it is certainly not fast. We definitely set boundaries with work and school to protect it. Working remotely AND taking care of acreage and livestock sounds very stressful to me. I am decidedly not a farm girl, even though I did grow up in a rural area.

I’ve heard a family say they wanted a “slower” life as less of a keeping up with the joneses kind of thing. This is what I have seen in my circle.

And, at least here, and I'm sure its this way elsewhere, "suburb" can represent wildly different towns with the same label. I live in an area that is slowly becoming more and more 'city adjacent' based on population and business growth. I've noticed big differences in how things around here look now than when I was a kid (I returned to the same area that I grew up in). If I go 20 min north on the highway where my MIL lives, it's very different. It's wild to watch the suburb to city transition. Where I live has always been considered a suburb but based on population and growth we are solidly a mid size city. It gives people a lot of feelings.

Life is "slower" because everything closes at 9-10pm and nothing is ever happening besides school functions or bowling 🙃
Literally the only things nearby is open "late" are fast food, and even some of that has been hit or miss since covid. It's 45 min to a 24hr pharmacy, although that's also a covid change too

Someone was just arrested locally after making threats against LGBTQIA+ students in a neighboring school district. The Prom King & Queen were both part of the LGBTQIA+ community. A couple weeks ago the Superintendent of another local-ish district cancelled the Prom court after the students nominated a trans student to the Prom court. Another local district just voted to remove wording from their district policies specifically protecting LGBTQ staff and students because it was "too broad". It's a small district and over 40 students spoke over a few hours against removing the wording
I attended a local Dem group's "thinking of running for local office?" meeting and they were really pushing being involved in EVERYTHING and it not being worth it/not being a good elected official if you aren't. If I could make a difference helping protect these students and staff (the outgoing board member, who also is a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, thinks this will be the next issue to come up in our district), shouldn't that be a positive? I would love to be more involved, but it's not in the cards right now. It would probably be a bit difficult to manage a school board position while MH is working on his PhD, but I feel strongly about everyone having access to a good education and fighting against the current attacks on children (and staff), especially those against the LGBTQIA+ community. Shouldn't that be enough? We're in such a red area it was really discouraging to get the vibe if you're not doing it all you shouldn't even bother
Sorry for my word vomit. I'm struggling with my feelings on running for school board

I'm struggling with my feelings on running for school board I'm so sorry. Honestly, in my area, the local leaders are the same way. If you're not doing it all, you actively support the crumbling of democracy and should feel the guilt and burden of it resting on your shoulders. But that's just not the case, and actively drives away people who are just starting to feel like they have the time and energy to even start to get involved. If any one person tries to do it all, they'll burn out and everyone will be worse off without them. I think if you're at all interested, run. You might not win. You might win. The only thing you can guarantee either way is people saying that you're doing it wrong. So, fuck 'em. Run and make what difference you can by fighting for the things you can. Because you won't make all of them happen, either. But you can try. And seeing that lets other people know they can try too. That's how change happens.

I should screen shot your response for when I need a pep talk 😂 I felt pretty good about it when I met with the board member not seeking re-election, so it's discouraging the local Dems are so negative. We should be encouraging people to get involved in ANY capacity! I think I just need to keep reminding myself that I should work on getting a petition started to get on the ballot. School ends in 3 weeks and I could ask parents at pickup I'm friendly with for signatures. I could always scrap it later if I change my mind, but it'd be due before school starts in the fall

So I just got an email, text, and phone call about a threat for a school shooting at my kid's district. It's an image that a high schooler reported and is now spreading like crazy through the HS and MS. Curious if it's another national hoax thing, or something that's generic from Snapchat and has just found its way into their district or what. I'm going to spoiler the image they emailed out, it's a shitty picture of a screenshot, but anyone else seen this yet? I'm hoping it's another nation farce since their district or schools aren't specifically named.

Wow, we got a note for a HS within our county in GA about a threat made overnight, the school stated they were increasing police presence as a result. I wonder if it's the same thing, but I hadn't see this image so who knows.

Our professional development this morning was active shooter training. We are a spec ed preschool so being in the moment will definitely be different than what we practiced. First scenario was to just hide and I was shot. 2nd and 3rd scenarios involved barricades, distractions, etc. My heart rate was through the roof.
The trainer did mention that we were in a "good" location because of how close we are to nearby law enforcement. We have city, county, port authority, and others within 5 miles.

Even if a nationwide hoax, it's still terrifying because of the nature of how we (sadly) live now. I'm sorry to everyone dealing with the fall out of that today.

The heaviness of the news and the fuckery that is happening in my state's legislature with the new GOP supermajority have done a number on me, and I've had to stay away from here and most news. But I need to word vomit.
There is active shooter in my mom's town about 30 minutes away. She is fine, but the shooter is her best friend's nephew, who they also know well. My mom is with her best friend trying to comfort her, but she is beside herself. According to the news, he shot an officer, who has non life threatening injuries, and has barricaded himself in his home. I'm sure it won't end well. It's so fucking sickening how this is literally going to touch every single person in our country.
When it started, my mom and her husband were at a nearby grocery store and heard a round of gun shots. They fucking decided to go in anyways!!! Like Jesus Christ mom, how do you not have the sense to realize this shit is not a drill and that is the opposite of what you do in this fucked up country???
After I yelled at her about that, I couldn't help myself but remind her that it doesn't have to be this way, and that how we vote is literally a matter of life and death. I'm pretty sure she has started to vote more D after some long talks to think about how things affect her grandchildren. But I'm sure her husband votes all R. If only gun violence affecting you on the most personal level would cause some people to wake up.
It sounds so insensitive to write out, but I just didn't know how to process it all in the moment besides mostly anger.
