Apparently there was an incident at the high school here today where it was reported a student had a weapon in the parking lot. The SRO and police came and "after receiving parental consent" searched the vehicle and found an air soft gun. I don't really understand why they needed parental consent to search if there is a possible threat? And the school never went into lockdown or anything while they were investigating the situation which seems wrong to me. Apparently there was another issue last night at a sporting event that I don't have details on but the school didn't really respond well to either.

Having had my first at a fresh 18 (he was born 6 weeks after my birthday) I am a huge advocate of factual sex ed. My parents wouldn't talk about it and I had abstinence only ed at school. I asked to go on BC and my mom said no. It's proven teen PG rates go down when they get a good education. It's so fucking stupid Such unfortunate job security for me. We're hitting sex ed in 8th grade next week. My sixth graders will get puberty ed in June. Kids know that regardless of age or grade I will answer basically anything and I get asked pretty much every you could possibly imagine. I am so very grateful to live in a comprehensive sex ed mandated state and to have full liberty of what I teach in those units (standard targeted, obviously, but freedom none the less) We just finished up a two week state mandated unit on internet safety, abuse, sexual assault, and trafficking that I co-taught with our counselors and social workers. The rage I feel knowing other states won't let kids know this information is just, I can't wrap my brain around it. They can all go shove it. If I do end up running for school board, I may want to pick your brain if you're willing. I know OH used to teach comprehensive sex ed

It's so important and I get so mad that it's withheld from kids to their detriment.

Our whole county uses the same curriculum; Monique Burr Foundation's Child Safety Matters and Teen Safety Matters, if anyone is curious. It's a great program.

I did the cybersecurity badge in our Girl Scout meetings this year. Something that every kid needs to know. When I think of how naive I was when I first got online, I cringe.

I wish everyone everywhere had the freedom and desire to teach all this stuff. It goes against every fiber of my being to be open about any of it with DD, but she already has come to us with questions, and it's NBD to answer them. She also knows that if she's ever confused, her parents are a better source than any other kids at school.

They blocked the lower court ruling while the case works its way through the system.

Yes. I still don't trust them, but staying the ban while working its way through the court was not what I expected at all. I figured the ban would be in place the entire time. I still don't know why the fuck a judge is being allowed to rule on FDA approval, though.

Thank Jesus. We're not out of the woods but it feels like we can breathe with this decision.

My 4th grader is getting puberty education starting next month. Which is good because he's starting puberty! It's surprising to me that NY doesn't start til 6th grade cnf but I'm so thankful for good health/sex educators like you. I taught sex ed in the Peace Corps and absolutely loved it but knew I could never handle the political red tape in this country. And I was teaching in a Catholic country so it's something I felt that way about here.

I've gone down to elementary schools to deliver it before. I just do a deeper dive with my sixth graders. Plus in elementary school they still separate by sex for the puberty lessons, but in middle school they all stay together, so they tend to absorb a bit more the second time around. My eighth graders get the full sex ed; birth control, STI, consent and safe sex, abstinence, all of it. If my younger kids ask about any of the eighth grade curriculum geared questions I will always answer them honestly though. My kid's district just started elementary health this year. I'll be curious to see when DD1 starts learning about any of it.

My 5th grader has yet to learn about puberty in NY and I hate it because many of them including DS1 are clearly in puberty.

My DD1 is in 4th grade and I have no idea if/when they learn about it here. A lot of her dance teammates attend another school and they learned about it earlier this year. I have a feeling it's going to be something that falls to me so I need to start looking into some resources.

PDQ I was at a gala tonight and former congresswoman Jackie Spier is a huge supporter of this non profits work. I’ve seen at events before so it’s not just write a check stuff. Anyways she was there looking lovely. And one of the live auction prizes was a lunch with her at a fancy Italian place where she promised to dish about Washington. I’m kicking myself for not going for it. She actually auctioned two off. Next year, I’m going in with a bid.

It's insane how backwards we've gone. I had the puberty talk day starting in 4th grade here in Austin, TX. Public school. Parents were of course allowed to opt their kids out. That was in 1996. What the fuck to it being 2023!!! And this being not allowed.

What the fuck to it being 2023!!! And this being not allowed. This is how our district does it. The first presentation is in 4th grade and parents can opt out. They send lots of emails and very clear instructions on how to opt your kid out, along with parent materials you can view beforehand. It shouldn’t be an issue, but I worry going forward that our state is going to go backwards and nix the entire program to pander to the republicans voters.

My 4th grader had the first puberty talk at school earlier this year. He was quite embarrassed by it, but I think it was good for him to hear it at school as well as from me and H. Especially the bit about the importance of daily showers and deodorant.
I let him pick out his own body wash and deodorant at Target. He chose all options from the Method Men’s brand, so now H and I call him our Method Man. 😜

Yeah we had puberty talks in 4th grade in Alabama in 1985 or so. And a hearty fuck off to Thomas and Alito for dissenting on the mifipristone stay. I mean we already know they are the worst.

I tell my students all the time to put on deodorant, especially this time of year. Y'all stink, musty little monsters! Ugh, preteens with minimal self awareness and warming weather. My classroom gets so ripe some days, lol.

These are the people who wear t-shirts that say "faith over fear" and decry how us snowflakes need safe spaces because we're afraid all the time.
The literal irony of it all makes me want to bang my head against a wall.
