Jesus. Over a basketball in a yard?? This is a man that should not have access to any weapons. According to the linked story he assaulted his girlfriend in December with a sledge hammer. Fucking what!? God I hope he gets a significant sentence. What a shit person.

Remember when they used to pretend it wasn’t the guns, it was guns in the bad guys hands. But have then done literally everything they can to let anyone anywhere with no permits, training, nothing just have guns? they just keep expanding the definition of "bad guy".

This is the only thing that I can hope for sometimes. Gen Z needs to be our heavy hitters for the long game. Same. I feel bad about the amount of work we're saddling them with, but they really will be the turning point I think. I suspect they'll be the ones to finally crack down on guns too. They're of the school shooting generation and they're over it. I'd say us millennials are young enough we'll still be down in the dirt with them. Our two generations together I think will be quite powerful and have a similar social history of school shootings, bad economics, and endless war. The GOP nightmare is just beginning which I think is why they're being as insane as they are. Dictators tend to act ruthless right before they die. Or at least that's what helps me sleep at night.

The Post actually has a story today about how the GOP may be on the "wrong" side of abortion and it's causing a dilemma for possible presidential candidates. Let the turning point be now, please! www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/04/20/republicans-abortion-dobbs-election/

I agree. DS is kind of indifferent wrt politics, but he's said a LOT of kids he graduated with are very opposed to their parent's maga views. It's encouraging living in a very red area, but unfortunately I think a lot of them won't stick around after college because of it either

As a Gen Xer who has been down in the dirt for 25+ years, I'm disappointed that we didn't do more for you guys, but then again I guess it holds true to the apathetic trope of our generation.

For sure, us millennials are still very much young enough and also of the generation. It's painful waiting for the older GOP to be out and for the younger generation to be old enough to vote. I have faith though.

RE: gun violence - you'll see a lot of "shoot first ask questions later" type signage on houses in this area, along with the lower peninsula (shaped like a mitten) holding a gun. These nutters have been empowered by the GOP/NRA to start doing just that so action must be swiftly & publicly taken to minimize the damage it's going to do. I have vehemently opposed "Stand Your Ground" laws since I learned about them with Trayvon. It's a detrimental law to how our society functions, and will obviously disproportionally affect POC.
Requisite fuck GQP and MTG.

My cousin, who is trans, just posted about a walk-out that will be happening at their college in a conservative state.
The youth are much smarter than the almost dead guys.
I am not leaving this on the back of teenagers, but I have to believe there is a brighter future ahead.

We had a Stand Your Ground case semi-recently where a guy shot some teenagers that broke into his detached garage, some of them in the back. It sounded like they broke on to smoke in there, obviously not okay, but they weren't threatening him. At least 1 was shot in the back. Fortunately he was convicted.

Stand your ground laws are the epitome of a solution looking for a problem to me. Like statistically how often are these situations coming up and not being handled correctly by existing laws? I don’t know the answer but I can tell you it’s not worth what we have going on now.

Our school trap team got endorsed by the NRA and I was pleasantly surprised by the number of people who are pissed at it. And the article says that the school is proud of the endorsement. I’m seriously debating sending a message to our superintendent and board of Ed that it was 100% unacceptable what was said.
ETA it’s the friends of the new that gave them the donation/endorsement.

And I’ve seen so many people saying stand your ground laws are a constitutional right. The neighbors of the guy who shot the girl in NY for turning around in his driveway are saying he had the right because he would have been fearful because it’s not a well know area and they shouldn’t have been out there. It’s ridiculous.

It's terrifying I agree with this, and I am sure non-white people and a lot of people who are not Christian have felt like this for a long time. I think I never had to feel like this, as a white, former Christian, except in the sense that I am a woman and there are a lot of misogynistic men out there. It's just that the circle I have been in for so long is getting smaller, and the threats cover a lot more people now. But marginalized people have been screaming for generations and they are just trying to live.

Also, if it's an lightly trafficked area with bad lighting then I would expect more people to get lost and be turning around in driveways.

We should ALL be able to exist (and occasionally get lost) without being fearful I have always felt fear being a girl/woman, but it was more from the SA side rather than being shot. Now it's all a fear

Same thing with the boy who got shot for ringing the doorbell. You can't tell me that was about anything other than he wanted to shoot him. He shot him through a glass door and then shot him again after he was down. None of that is self defense or fear. People should be able to turn their car around without being shot. This man wanted to shoot someone.

And the cheerleaders who were shot because they mistakingly got into the wrong car, got out after realizing their mistake, and were shot when they pulled around to apologize. Like, why are people so afraid of these seemingly normal mistakes?
Answer: they aren't, they just want to shoot someone.
Fuck guns.

It’s ridiculous. It’s all such bullshit. It is so easy to get turned around and go up the wrong driveway in rural areas. People think that they are justified in shooting others simply because they feel scared. But they are scared because Fox News and 4chan have been filling their head with racist and bigoted conspiracy theories about crime. Fear isn’t a rational emotion. It’s not the same as self defense in the face of a true threat.
