We begin the week with a House Judiciary hearing on how Alvin Bragg's "pro-crime, anti-victim policies have led to an increase in violent crime and a dangerous community for NYC residents".

That hearing was just as much of a circus as you think it was.

Happy Marathon Monday! It's been ten years since the Boston Marathon bombings. The actual anniversary date was the 15th, but I imagine today was very emotional. Woof.

A school district in my state announced the new bell schedule for next year. Our state legislature passed a requirement for more school hours for kids and teacher development.
The high school and middle school hours seem odd, so I wanted to share here to see if it's normal. It doesn't impact my family but I am always following changes in education just in case.
High school students will go from 8:40 a.m. to 3:40 p.m. (7:25 a.m. to 2:25 p.m. currently) Middle school students will go from 9:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. (8:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. currently) Elementary school times will be split into two groups:
7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for Group 1 8:05 a.m. to 3:05 p.m. for Group 2

Elementary is also in 2 stages, 8:20 and 9:10. HS is 8:20 There has been research showing the benefit of a later start time for HS/middle, have they used that as a reason for the switch? Here the complaint was older siblings not being home/available for elementary kids for working parents plus they "streamlined" bussing to make it more efficient

I like the later start for the older kids. It just seems like a late end to the day. I wish I could remember my school hours but I am guessing 8-3.

I moved to a new school in HS that was later like that, out at 3:40ish instead of 2:20 and it was fine, we basically just went straight to sports practice anyway. That is pretty late for MS at 4:15 but yeah I think it makes developmental sense to start the older kids later. 9:15-4:15 does seem long but I think my elementary was like 9:20-3:30. They've made the school day longer since then I suppose.

I’m seeing a lot of anonymous content pushed in my TikTok algorithm. Lots of chatter about their sharing of Epstein’s alleged black book.
This is when I get a little paranoid. Is this real? Is this TikTok (CCP influence?!) pushing anarchist content?! Am I becoming the leftist version of a right wing conspiracy nut? I know it’s a full circle, and I don’t want to accidentally fall backwards too far🥴

There may be truth in it of course, but it's better to follow up and get information from verified sources, imho.

I teach middle school and our kids can come in at 7 and go to the cafeteria, released from there at 7:20, and have to be in homeroom by 7:30. First period starts at 7:43 and our day ends at 2:15. I would absolutely detest 9:15 to 4:15pm. Those are late times for secondary levels. I know from a brain development stand point secondary should start later, but that also means sports or after school activities go later, meaning dinner and homework and showers and bed are later too. I'm a morning person, so take that as you wish when I hate those times, lol.

I teach high school and we're 8:10-2:50. We already have kids leaving early for sports all the time, especially in the spring. I can't imagine how much class they would be missing on that late schedule. Most games/meets start at 4. We're more rural though, so lots of bus time for away events.

A local district tried to push high school hours back but received a lot of criticism from parents. Not only were sports an issue, but many had after school jobs

They shifted everyone’s start times here due to a shortage of bus drivers. There used to be enough drivers to overlap routes, but not anymore. Elementary starts: 7:30 Jr. High: 8:15 High school: 9:00
High school gets out so late and a lot of people were unhappy, but it is what it is. There are just not enough drivers to make a different schedule work.

Our ES is 8-2:35 and the MS/HS is 8:30-3:15.
Pretty sure my high school bell was 7:40. The school district adjacent doesn't have ES start until 9ish, which is wild to me and probably would have been beneficial to my oldest.

My daughters ES is 9:30-4
We have the same bussing issues. Some ES's start at 7:30, middle school is 830 and high school rides the city bus.

We’re on the earliest ES start schedule in our district with an 8:35am bell. My neurodiverse night owl children would do better with a 9am start, but so it goes. We roll in every day at ~8:34am and they are almost always grumpy and I am almost always frantic from trying to get them out of the house. Our middle school starts at 7:30am. I’m NOT looking forward to that!

Ds is in fourth, and they go 8:30-4. With bus time, he's gone from 8-4:40 every day. It's a long day, for sure, but it works well for us. The high school goes 7:30 - 2:45.
