California recently passed legislation mandating later start times for middle (8am) and high schools (8:30am) so schedules have been adjusted accordingly.

A school district in my state announced the new bell schedule for next year. Our state legislature passed a requirement for more school hours for kids and teacher development. The high school and middle school hours seem odd, so I wanted to share here to see if it's normal. It doesn't impact my family but I am always following changes in education just in case. High school students will go from 8:40 a.m. to 3:40 p.m. (7:25 a.m. to 2:25 p.m. currently) Middle school students will go from 9:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. (8:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. currently) Elementary school times will be split into two groups: 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for Group 1 8:05 a.m. to 3:05 p.m. for Group 2 This was the schedule at a neighboring county when I taught there.

Our ES is 8-2:35 and the MS/HS is 8:30-3:15. Pretty sure my high school bell was 7:40. The school district adjacent doesn't have ES start until 9ish, which is wild to me and probably would have been beneficial to my oldest. We’re on the earliest ES start schedule in our district with an 8:35am bell. My neurodiverse night owl children would do better with a 9am start, but so it goes. We roll in every day at ~8:34am and they are almost always grumpy and I am almost always frantic from trying to get them out of the house. Our middle school starts at 7:30am. I’m NOT looking forward to that! DS1 gets on the bus in the dark for the vast majority of the school year

High school starts here at 7:20. So early. We drove them (until my oldest got her license) because the bus picks up 6:25ish. It's a really, really early morning- in the dark- at the bus stop.
I do love that they get home by 3. But it's so counter-productive to the natural clock of most teenagers.

Our district follows a reverse bell schedule and I absolutely love it. What is a reverse bell schedule? My girls school is 8:20-2:50. They get on the bus around 7:45 and get off around 3:25. Again though, we're morning people so this actually works really well for us. I mean, DD2 was already up when I came out of the basement from my workout at 5:30 this morning, so, yeah.. This timing works so well for us too from a child care perspective. H gets them on the bus and is still to work by 8:30 and I'm home before the afternoon bus to get them off.

Our high school’s (10-12) first bell is at 7:15—and it will get earlier if they switch to the 4 day week they’ve been talking about. I’m not sure exactly when they get out, but I do know a lot of high schoolers pick up siblings at our elementary which gets out at 3, so it’s well before that.
I’m going to go look up the others because now y’all have me wondering.
ETA—we’re in a huge district with 60+ campuses and some variety, but for now the campuses my kids will attend would look like this. A nearby district recently went to 4 day weeks and I think it will force surrounding districts to follow suit eventually, so most of this could change by the time it applies to my family.
K-4, 8:00-3:10 5-8, 8:50-4:00 9-12, 7:20-2:30

ES is 7:30-3 MS is 8:30-4 HS starts at 8:30 but not sure the end time.
My older kids were excited about the later MS start time until they realized they still had to get up and out of the house with the 3rd grader. MS doors open at 7:45 so they hang out or do hw in the morning.

Elementary schools go earliest (7:15 am start), middle school later (8:30 start), high schools latest (9:30 start). I think the reverse part comes from it being opposite of what was the norm of older kids starting earliest and younger kids starting latest.

Since we are just sharing examples, my DD ES is 7:45-2:05 (K 7:55-1:55). I know CA changed the MS and HS start times this year, but don’t know the exact times since it’s not my problem yet. I think MS is in the 8 an hour, and HS early 9 am.

With the CA law change, my kids ES starts at 8:45. They threw around the idea of starting before 8 and thank the Lord our school didn't go that way; we still struggle to be on time

H and I have this thing where we say people (well, men really) have very punchable faces (the title of Colin Jost’s memoir). We don’t actually punch them, I promise. We mostly use it for sports people we don’t like. Anyways, I forgot about Stuebe until that clip but my first thought was “wow, I forgot about that very punchable face”.

What the fuck? I thought we came to the consensus that child labor is BAD, WRONG, CRIMINAL decades ago?
I just can’t even begin to understand how lawmakers can think it is okay to legalize young teenagers working overnight shifts. 😢

They don’t care about the kids from families below the poverty line.

A 20 year old woman was shot and killed for pulling into the wrong driveway by mistake in upstate NY. I didn’t know her or her family, but I have friends who did.
Shot and wounded for knocking on a door, murdered for pulling into a driveway. American vigilante gun culture is probably the thing that scares me most these days (it’s definitely alive and well in NOVA). It’s all so incredibly fucked up.

Plus they'll need something for older kids and teens to do if they get their way and close down the public school system.
