My question is how far back does this tactic go? Did Phillip sell/allow/leak stories re: Charles to deflect off him? The Queen’s “never complain never explain”… was that hers or from her father? It seems like prior to King George (idk what number, whichever one came last) the BRF were this mysterious entity that nobody in general society had a handle on. Did he ever need to shine the spotlight somewhere else to detract on his own issues? Or did he just ride the coattails of the Edward scandal and assume nothing he was ever going to do would be that newsworthy (at the time). Disclaimer: most of these assumptions are based from watching The Crown. (Like the scene where they host the first open or public garden party) I think the more invasive nature of the press is what changed this. George moved the family back into the spotlight because he said the public wouldn't keep paying for them if they never saw them. I doubt he ever had to shift the focus away from himself, but I think he did play a role in hiding some of Edward's scandals. Yes I very much agree that media and social media have driven a lot of this. But to what degree did it happen among their “circle” before? I know “the institution” has been vile for…. Well. Probably for forever. I guess that’s my answer. It’s all shit and everyone sucks.

Radley I mean, not losing their mom in a desperately tragic way as teenagers and then getting absolutely no counseling in general is a pretty HUGE check in the "they'd be better off" column, so I'm not sure your point. Moreover, her personal shortcomings aside, Diana absolutely hated the press and, while speculative, it stands to reason that she may have been more of a help to both of them as they got older and the stories became more about them. I should have said "I dont think they would have been much better people". I think they would still be spoiled, still be products of their class, still have tempers, still be bad at problem solving. And honestly although Diana had a better grasp on what the people wanted from the Royals, she clearly struggled with handling the media. She fostered their attention and spun things her way in an attempt at controlling the narrative. She lied about the book she had a hand in, I don't see this as much different than how to rest of the family deals with press, she just did it better. Maybe she wouldn't leak shit about her kids though, I do give her that. I don’t disagree that they would be necessarily better people, but I think H would have felt loved and like he had someone on his side.

Camilla likely wouldn’t have been able to marry Charles, so to the degree that she has leaked stories about the boys, things might be a lot different. I think a lot of the basics would be there, but trauma is so impactful on kids especially that it is hard to know to what degree.

Diana was pretty spoiled and pretty bratty. She was engaging in a lot of weird relationship stuff, some with married men. She was stalking wives, making weird phone calls. Falling IN LOVE within moments only to fall into DEEP HATE quickly thereafter. That's just true. Dodi was...a shady dude. Of course the fundamental tragedy of losing your mom, and in that way, is profoundly shaping. But yeah, the "if only Diana had lived they'd be fine" idea feels naive. And before anyone says "no one is saying that" meh. Kind of sometimes in the past. It's ok, it's commonly said in general. A lot of this is so "she never got to be a real young person" to me. Like getting to be in her late teens, early 20s and making all those early love mistakes. Like the crushes, the dating, etc. She was just thrust into it all at 18/19. And with an upbringing that was sheltered and spoiled. Poor little rich kid, I know. But most of the stupid shit I did with the making weird phone calls and being fickle to people I liked I managed to get out of the way prior to being married and having kids. 😅😅 This is all true stuff you've written of course. But she needed help like a lot of people. And maybe she would have gotten some eventually? Or maybe she would have died in some other tragic way (drugs, alcohol, etc). And maybe it would have screwed the boys up in some other way, too.

Another shot of Kate to really show off the coat and even though I'm not normally big on gold buttons, the coat is that good, I wouldn't mind a bit. I love the bag, too.

Let me be clear - I think both women mis-stepped and both are also deserving of grace here. This. Plus, they worked it out between themselves. This issue here isn’t that it happened- it’s that (likely) KP leaked it inaccurately to make Meghan look bad and distract from the Rose pegging Willy story. My interpretation from the Oprah interview is that Meghan was hurt that the press was reporting something false and designed to slam her AND Kate’s peeps didn’t correct it. Meghan seemed clear that she accepted Kate’s apology and forgave her at the time. *I haven’t been able to read Spare yet, so if there is a better explanation in the book, mileage may vary and all.

My sister and I had a legit fight over the earrings I wore for her wedding. katespade I'm laughing that you liked this because I know you remember it! Also liking it because I guarantee I’m going to have a similar fight with my sister in about 18 months (she already doesn’t believe me that she needs to be dress shopping sooner rather than later to give herself plenty of time for her dress to come in).

Will looks like a grandpa who doesn't understand selfies. His baldness in that selfie is certainly alarming.

I started the book this afternoon. I’m only like, 15 pages in maybe?
I’m not looking forward to all the todger talk (but I am totally using todger going forward).
Also very much love the plaid coat from today. I loooove a good plaid and that’s a good one.

The BRF was definitely in the newspapers and influencing culture before George. Victoria and Albert’s wedding apparently set a trend for all kinds of wedding traditions. And there was definitely tons of scandal and gossip in the high society circles… so I’m sure there was plenty of deflecting going on by word of mouth. I do think the Windsor’s really leaned in to using the press to their advantage, creating this beast we see today.

This dress story is so bizarre. The bridesmaid’s dresses were designed by Givenchy in Paris. Ajay was the London-based tailor who altered them. There’s a piece missing - who sewed them initially? Was it Givenchy? If they were so wrong, why wasn’t the haute-couture fashion house that is 2hrs away by train not in London fixing the mess for the royal wedding where their name would be tied to the dresses? Of course we don’t know. I’m just wondering to myself these things. Anyway, I stand firm in that it was clearly a stressful situation and neither behaved the best. Maybe they were originally sewn to fit the way so many of Meghan’s clothes did… (Ok I’ll go sit in the corner now)

Okay, I’m legit dying at TK Maxx putting out a statement that they don’t do sales and therefore Harry could never have shopped them. Followed by the 18 million picture tweets of their sale adverts and their own tweets showing pictures of Harry carrying their shopping bags.
I mean, if it’s anything like here the Venn diagram of middle age white women hating on Harry and Meghan has a huge overlap with the base of TK Maxx shoppers.

I picked up spare from the library. I’m going to try and wait until the weekend so I don’t stay up to late tonight I fell asleep twice so far reading it. Idk how much of that is due to the newborn sleep stage I’m currently in and how much is bc the military stuff keeps going and going and going.

I don’t think I read much of anything when I was in newborn stage. Or it took me months. Maybe in the last month have I started reading more and I feel like it’s not fast enough compared to people just blowing through books.

So embarrassing. But I am determined. Probably should have started with a different book lol. Other than reading my cousin’s book in 2022, I think it was 2020 when I last read a book. 🥴

But the military chapters have some of H’s best American accents! I’m so glad I chose the audio book, he’s a great narrator.
