Asked if we will have to live with this thing like we live with the flu, Dr Fauci says absolutely not, we have highly effective vaccines and should be able to get annual case rates well below that of influenza. I feel like just like influenza though it banks on enough people getting vaccinated. . .

Wouldn't it be great if we had the same vaccination rates with the flu? I know it isn't as high of an effective rate as the COVID vaccines but man, it would make for easier fall/winters. I have gotten a flu shot every year of my life minus a few years in my 20s, and I do not even remember the last time I got the flu. Of course now that I say that, I'll get it this year with my luck.

You won't, because even if a strain we don't anticipate pops up (which does happen occasionally) you'll probably wear a mask in high risk settings 😉

Oh this is great news. My DCP has been so hoping to be able to see her brother, who lives near Toronto, over Thanksgiving.

addymac I used to say I was going to marry a hockey player or have kids that played (I grew up with my brother playing, dated a player before H and played myself). None of that has happened.

I read a story a couple weeks back, I wish I could remember where I found it. It was about a family of 4 fully vaxxed adults and 2 u12kids, all who ended up with COVID. No one got too sick but the overall take was that it's the vaxxed masked folks who are being cautious right now, and it's hurting us mentally and it's hurting the economy. But we're thinking of the greater good and helping to protect the anti-vaxxers/anti-maskers. And that maybe it's time we stop worrying about them. If this thing is truly going to be endemic, we need to do the best for ourselves and stop worrying about those who can't see beyond their own noses.
It was an interesting perspective but one I can't even consider until my kids are vaxxed. Which will be as soon as freaking possible.

Could they create a new flu shot using the mRNA technology? I assume if that was possible it would get the effectiveness rating of the flu vaccine higher so even the annual dose just worked better for those who get it.

Just got my flu shot and the lady said this year is the biggest turnout for flu shots she’s ever seen, even more than last year. So at least in my little town the message is getting out!

I got my shot today too. The pharmacist didn’t let the alcohol dry enough and it stung, so I flinched a bit. He apologized, but I said, “hey, better than getting the flu.” He replied, “I wish I could convince everyone of that.” Which, my coty has a 45% covid vax rate right now, so I am not surprised no one is getting a flu shot.

As soon as kids can get vaccinated, the anti crowd will become an ignored super minority. I’m giddy at the thought.

Update on BIL, he was sent home Tuesday.
PDQ Frustrated because he didn’t feel like they looked into his back pain enough for him, especially after telling him he would be there for at least a week. So he is at home quarantining, or that is, at least, my understanding. Still has a cough, MIL is anxious with worry, so I had her grab a pulse ox finger thing for him. Glad he is well enough to be home.
MIL & FIL were rapid tested yesterday (day 5 & 7 respectively) and it came back negative. No symptoms, but we will still steer clear for another week. So that is a relief.
Monday, I saw a post from a nurse at the hospital he is at, she said their covid unit is full of transplant and immune suppressed patients. Also learned they are keeping the kids in the covid unit, because they are needing the non-covid beds still for RSV and immune suppressed peds cases. There is a pediatrician(s) in the covid unit.

Our school board meeting went until almost 11 last night about COVID and masks and when to lift restrictions.
I do not like the new superintendent, he turned himself into a pretzel with all the twisting he was doing. "I appreciate what our medical experts are saying but what if we used a color system for each school, like green yellow orange and red and just use masks at yellow and above". There is a district in ALASKA thats very similar to ours and they do fine without mandatory masking. AND THE BEST ONE? Kids are only in masks 20% of the time when they are out of school they aren't wearing them.
THANKFULLY some of the boards more reluctant members have come around and said Look we are in Crisis standard of Care and we need to do our part. Except one dude who was all why should we bother doing the right thing when the community isn't.
So masks are still mandatory for the moment until we get out of CsC or the 5-11 crowd can be vaccinated to 70%. Which hopefully gets us to Dec/Jan at minimum.

Just had a woman in the library who refused to wear a mask. She said "when they close the borders, then I'll wear a mask"
Thanks for outing yourself as a racist, makes things much easier.

A really interesting thread about what the COVID endgame will likely look like for at least the next decade. Bedford won a MacArthur this year to pursue his work in viral evolution and has a lot of really interesting insights on the pandemic. My take from his take is that endemic COVID is going to suck, even if it’s not as bad as the current pandemic. 😔
A few key predictions:

Hi all - I've been MIA due to home renovation work and work work. But I'm following along with the Moderna booster meeting online today and they're finally starting to talk about the question that's up for a vote:
"Do the currently available data support the safety and effectiveness of Moderna’s vaccine for use as a booster at least six months after the primary series for the following populations: People aged 65 and older; people 18 to 64 at high risk of severe Covid; people 18 through 64 who live or work in situations where they are at increased of severe Covid?"
DH is a teacher who had Moderna so hoping he can get a booster asap?
