Teachers and schools went from being heros in the first few months of the pandemic, to whiny assholes who don't want to work anymore, and now to child abusers who deserve to be physically attacked and screamed at and harassed.
Cool cool. Great. This is fine.

Cool cool. Great. This is fine. Honestly I take all my hats off for all of you. We had meet your teacher night on Thursday for my kindergartner and as we were walking through the building I was thinking about how scary it would be to work there as an adult, knowing that you’re surrounded by germ vectors that can’t be protected yet. We have a mask mandate thankfully but still. I sincerely appreciate school staff right now.

A neighboring district has reported an increase in parent violence against staff. This is from yesterday's article. "Bullied, belittled, threatened and physically pushed or grabbed by parents." This is scary and I wonder how we turn this around for the sake of what school should really be about. Ironically if the student has engaged in most of these activities they would be subject to an immediate expulsion in the district I am in. Maybe it’s time to extend the same rules to the behaviors of parents and guardians.

Spoke too soon. We had a case at our school this week. My kid wasn’t considered a close contact and I don’t know any more details. Hopefully no spread like last time.
We had 10+ weeks of school in the spring with no positive cases in our school (8 of those weeks as full days) and now we are 2 weeks 1 case each week.
I know we could be a lot worse off, I just think it’s interesting the difference with all the same protocols in the same community with delta on the scene.

I had actually managed to block out my worries about school shootings and shooting drills, since covid seems so overwhelming, but the last week or so I've been thinking about all that again and am really not handling it well. This will be my 7 year old's first time doing in-person schooling since preK so he hasn't gone through any of that yet and he's such a sensitive and worrying soul that I just dread how he is going to handle it.

Thankfully I had held out booking anything for this year, but I think you’ve made the right call. It sucks, but I’d rather go when I’d feel more comfortable and potentially have my kids vaxed.

I'm not even that broken up about it tbh. The worst part was having to wait on a Delta rep to refund the flight because we used ecredits to book it and couldn't do it automatically online. There were also more hotel options available so we were able to get a hotel we couldn't before and add an extra day to have some downtime/pool time. It'll definitely be more fun with the extra time and to have vaxxed* kids. *fingers crossed but I'll have bigger problems if my kids aren't vaxxed by then because I may be in jail

I've done enough "how to throw myself in front of a murderous gunman because my job description somehow now includes Human Shield and Forceful Defender of Safety Against Child Murder" trainings. I'm sure I can figure it out.

Feeling really anxious about school starting next week. Our town is 67% fully vaccinated (80% for adults), and masks are required for students and staff. They will still be eating lunch in the cafeteria but will have assigned seats 6 ft apart. We will have AC (with Merv-8 filters so not great), plus our PTA got HEPA filters for all the classrooms. They can take their masks off when eating and when they’re outside. No screening testing. Last year we had a daily health screening but they scrapped that this year in favor of a “contract” parents need to sign to not send their kid to school if they have a list of symptoms or COVID exposure. I know we are better off than lots of other places but still with Delta…. What do you think our chances are of my kid not getting COVID?

This sounds exactly how our school started out, then in week 4 after 10 positive cases on campus (and rising community cases), they re-implemented masks outside and symptom screening at drop off (same as last year). I guess I would hope your school is amenable to adjusting protocol as warranted?

Well we are two weeks of school in with masks and daily symptom checker with the whole grade (100+ kids) eating lunch in the cafeteria and so far cases are steady-a handful of cases spread over a dozen schools. Our city has also been having a slowly declining % positive (down to 3.3 from 5 at the beginning of August), so I’m hopeful that we can do this school thing without things getting crazy. FX. I’m sure next week it will be little did she know…

I’m still worried about the winter holidays, but for now we seem to be in a holding pattern. That said, DS had a stomach ache and threw up again tonight. It’s pretty clear that it’s an anxiety-related GI issue, but we’re going to have to take him to the pedi for a COVID test tomorrow to get cleared. Hopefully we can discuss more proactive ways to help control the GI stuff while we’re there.

Every single night at bedtime DD(almost 9) starts the "what if I can't fall asleep?" routine, which not infrequemtly ends with violently sobbing in her bed. I probably need to figure out what our therapy/psych coverage is like. We've tried relaxation techniques, melatonin, etc, nothing seems to help much.
She's always been a worried anxious kid but this bedtime dance really peaked when everything shut down last year. I'm almost ready to pull her from school and throw my hands in the air and say it doesn't matter when you sleep, you can do school at midnight and sleep all day. I'm sure MH starting a PhD program out of state hasn't helped the situation and it's not helping me because I'm juggling 3 kids with very different needs myself. I absolutely cannot handle more of this.

mrsweasley, that's really rough. DD2 does the same "what if I can't fall asleep" thing, but she does actually sleep with melatonin. I'd probably bring it up to the pedi to see if there's anything they can do. Maybe a sleep study on top of other therapy to see if there's something else that's keeping her awake.

mrsweasley, I'm so sorry. DD's anxieties all tend come out at bedtime too. It doesn't happen as frequently but when it does, it can end in tears. Even when she was a baby, it was like she would ramp up to a big release before bedtime and then fall asleep. DS is the opposite and just slows down until he's asleep. I hope you can find some support for her and yourself. That sounds like a lot.

I’ve got an anxious at bedtime kid too. And I am an anxious at bedtime adult. 😅 Lately I’ve been writing down 5 good things from the day before bed. It’s supposed to help my mind focus on good things instead of worries. I think it helps. With DS I’ve tried lots of things. One of my best tricks is doing a yoga nidra session with him. Knocks him out every time (but I save it for when other simpler things don’t work). You should be able to find guided sessions on YT or a meditation app if you want to give that a try.

mrsweasley that is tough to handle on your own. Does your DD express any desire to do virtual school? I wonder if it may be beneficial to try it if possible for a trimester. This is definitely more challenging all around than last year.

This is definitely more challenging all around than last year. We did virtual school last year, the district couldn't offer it this year. We were going to do a virtual public school until the district decided to require masks. She reallllly wanted to go back in person. And thanks everyone for the support and advice

mrsweasley also have an anxious non sleeper. We've found that (in addition to psychologist support) bedtime sleep meditation videos on YouTube really help. I don't let him watch the video, he just listens to it and it helps calm him, take his focus away from his anxiety and calmly drift off to sleep. There are a million on YouTube so she could help choose based on voices she likes or themes. One of our favorites:
