July Reads
The Perfect Daughter βοΈβοΈβοΈ Project Hail Mary βοΈβοΈβοΈβοΈβοΈ Oona Out of Order βοΈβοΈβοΈβοΈ The Good Sister βοΈβοΈβοΈβοΈ
Last night I finished Razorblade Tearsβ¦. Wow!! Not my usual read, but I loved it. Graphic violence, but it didnβt impact how I felt about the story. Characters were flawed and real. βοΈβοΈβοΈβοΈβοΈ
My next read I started late last night is How Lucky.

I just finished The Perfect Stranger by Meghan Miranda and really didnβt care for it. The story was redundant and it dragged. Iβm starting Every Last Fear by Alex Finlay next.

I finished 18 in July. Standouts for me: Malibu Rising The Perfect Find One by One Beach Read The Secret Bridesmaid I tore through the Court of Thorns and Roses- high entertainment value, but I'm not sure how much I truly loved it. Currently reading Devil in the Dark Water, and While Justice Sleeps and To Have and To Hoax just became available from the library. I'm basically reading as fast I can to keep up lol. Thinking I need to be picking more books on audio when they are available. On audio I'm listening to How to Catch a Sinful Marquess by Amy Rose Bennett. This is a new author for me. Please update on Amy rose Bennett when youβre done. Martha waters books lean a little madcap, but I enjoy them for what they are.

August TBR Currently listening to Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil The Girl with the Louding Voice, Abi Dare Don't Look Inside the Box in the Woods, Maureen Johnson A Woman is No Man, Etaf Rum So I teach 8th grade, for reference. I have a big bookshelf full of books that Iβve inherited over the years, or put on there myself, or have gotten from kids and parents donating. One of the books that I inherited from who knows how many teachers ago was Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Never read it or seen the film, but Iβd generally heard it was good. In fall 2020 I was looking for something to read and randomly plucked it off the shelf in my classroom. Oh my god. Iβm so glad none of my students ever borrowed it. So much more sex and genitalia descriptions than I realized π

I cannot focus lately. Itβs been really hard to get into anything and I have a lot of DNF.
Duke by Default, Alyssa Cole βοΈ βοΈ I basically hate read this one. It started off good, but the main characters were so freaking annoying. The heroine is so freaking insecure and questions everything. The hero is grumpy and rude.
Wilde Child, Eloisa James βοΈβοΈβοΈ The heroine is beautiful. Did I mention sheβs beautiful? Like on every single page.
Faithless in Death, J.D. Robb βοΈβοΈβοΈ1/2 The usual.
Currently reading The House of Broken Angels by Luis Alberto Urrea and Imagine Me Gone by Adam Haslett. Next up is Pachinko by Min Jin Lee.

I just read, "The Library of the Dead (Edinburgh Nights, #1)" by T.L. Huchu and really really enjoyed it. It takes place in a bit of an alternate future where something bad has happened and now there are ghosts, magic, modern technology doesn't all work, and there's a king. One of the things I loved is that a lot isn't explained yet- we don't know what exactly the conflict was or why ghosts are around, or why magic is a thing but you can tell answers are coming. The world building is great. It also takes place in Scotland and the author does a great job making this new Scotland come alive, I also really enjoyed the Scottish slang. The blurb is Sixth Sense meets Stranger Things in T. L. Huchu's The Library of the Dead, a sharp contemporary fantasy following a precocious and cynical teen as she explores the shadowy magical underside of modern Edinburgh. So if that sounds interesting to you, I recommend it

No real bad language, no sex, etc. But the language might pose an issue- lots of Scottish words that need to be looked up or guessed at the meaning. The Lockwood and Co. series by Jonathan Stroud is somewhat similar and more YA. But both series would be totally fine for young teens.

I'm slowly getting into reading again. My July reads:
People We Meet on Vacation: **** It was a good beach read. Verity: *** A very twisted and dark psychological thriller Migrations: **** Beautifully written, unsympathetic characters

After visiting Charleston with my BFF last week, we decided that we're going to Savannah next trip - and one of my reading challenges was to read a book set in a place you'd like to visit. Win-Win.

In July I read
The Midnight Library by Matt Haig Hostage by Clare Mackintosh 56 Days by Catherine Ryan Howard Beneath Devil's Bridge by Loreth Anne White Survive the Night by Riley Sager
All pretty good reads, but nothing really wowed me. I'm currently reading Every Last Fear by Alex Finlay. I'm definitely enjoying it and can't wait to finish it today.

Thereβs a lot of good choices for august kindle firsts! I wish we got two this month. Trying to decide between The Bennet Women, What Passes as Love, and Plenty.

I ended up enjoying The Midnight Library. I don't think it's in my top books for the year; but I was eager to find out what happened.

caer, I just finished It Happened One Summer and it wasβ¦a lot. Iβm like kind of interested in Hannah and Foxβs story but also am not sure I can take something that explicit again any time soon.

Yes, exactly! Again, I donβt mind sex scenes but I hate when theyβre so long and in place of an actual plot. It was a shame because I thought the first half was so cute. That said, I will definitely read the follow up and hope itβs a little less explicit lol.

There were a lot of them, and I wasnβt a fan of how they were written, and how he talked to her. Not demeaning exactly, but the tone was weird. I skimmed pretty much all of them.

Totally agree, the tone weirded me out. I know she usually writes historical romance so maybe that is more acceptable in that genre? But it didnβt feel like how I want anyone to talk to me or anyone else in contemporary times lol.

I think itβs just her style and itβs probably not for me.

I read the YA ballet book Tiny Pretty Things on vacation. It was fine for vacation, but I didn't love it. Don't think I'll grab the follow up.
I just started The Alice Network, and so far it is pulling me in and I'm enjoying it!

My dad and I went to his library book sale, and I refrained from buying anything for myself. I just have so many TBR piles around my house.
My dad was like yep, the way to ensure I don't read a book is to buy it. Since the library gives him a deadline, he is better about reading those. I guess I'm sort of like that these days, which didn't used to be the case!
