PA lasts foooooreeeeeeeveeeeer on 81. But then again, so does VA. VA was the bane of our existence when H and I moved from Boston to Tampa. YOU'RE NOT THAT BIG, VA, WHY YOU TAKE SO LONG TO GET THROUGH!?!!? We always say that about Maryland. I expect Ohio and Pennsylvania to take forever but WHY AM I IN MARYLAND FOR 2 GODDAMN HOURS, IT'S NOT BIG

Nope. And I never plan to - I’ll happily hop between airports when I visit TX. The longest drive I’ve done within a single state is probably San Diego to Oakland. Yeah, driving California bottom to top is something like 12-14 hours. In college I made the drive between SoCal and NorCal at the various holidays all the time so anything under 8 hours isn't that bad of a drive to me, ha. We did this a couple of times for fun. My family traveled well though, and we love CA

I’ve definitely hit the midlife crisis. All the fuckery of 2020 plus turning 40 just made me question everything about everything. I almost quit my job, I became a homeschooler, I’m trying to get H to move across the state… and am about to get another piercing and/or dye my hair blue 🤣 Now I just need to buy an impractical sports car or a motorcycle.

I've been eyeing a Vespa (thanks, Luca) as my useless tooling around town vehicle. The verde one is adorable.

And add me to the -currently experiencing mid-life crisis- list. My baby just turned 20 months yesterday (😭) and this pandemic has made me feel like we're all missing out on so much. I'm both sad and angry.

I always chose the fastest route going/coming home and the 5 is not known for it's views, lol. Even so, there's something soothing about a long drive. Will probably feel differently when we attempt this with children. Ha.

I am not a hugger and there's still a pandemic, but besides that I'd give you both big hugs right now willow and byjove. I hope a path forward reveals itself for both of you.

I will say, the Zoltan style machine with Trump inside to tell who knows what (Alec Baldwin’s impression was only slightly better) next to what looked like a porta potty. It was both bizarre and perfectly placed? I looove Zoltan. My dream is to find one for my future rec room.. I do not recommend this version, it wouldn’t make for a very fun atmosphere.

byjove, that is basically how I think I ended up sahm. Felt like I was wasting my time and majority of my check to be missing the kids. Projects and extra things at work weren’t enough and others who didn’t do any of that were moved up. It took me less time to do my job and the extras than I was required to be there. It made me realize I was miserable. Tried a pt job, which I loved to do, but the atmosphere was toxic. Decided didn’t want to go from a job I hated to working in a environment like that. We barely get by and I’m still trying to figure out what I want to do with my life. Two years before the little one is in school, so I need to focus. When I look at job descriptions now, I get flashes of imposter syndrome, then I remind myself that I’ve always had the most challenging routes or desks in jobs with nearly zero experience.

Hugs and hair pats to everyone who needs them. I know you guys will see brighter days ahead but I hate to see you hurting right now.
I’m so burnt out on work right now and I know I’m making mistakes but I can’t think. I don’t have any time to do my actual job as I just run from meeting to meeting and say I’ll do things I’ll never have time to do. I love what I do in theory but the current state is not sustainable. We are still thinking of moving out of the country next year but I don’t want to feel like I’m just running away from work. I want to go for the right reasons.

All 3 kids will be in elementary school (K for the twins and 1st for DD1) come September. I feel like I *should* be looking to get a job. I have a masters degree and having a hard time finding something flexible enough but also worth my time for how little they seem to pay. I feel like I’m just stuck in some weird space and have no clue what to do with myself.

willow, sending you good vibes for the be plan. I'm glad you're getting the support you need. byjove, while you didn't ask for hairpats - that's a lot of life coming at you right now. Sending you positivity for this part of your journey.

I did not get the Big Job. I'm pretty sad about it.
It's also part of my mid life crisis I think. So I really identify with that part of the conversation. Right now I feel like my life doesn't quite fit. Am I on the right job path? Is there anything else? My kids are getting more independent, so what do I like? I honestly don't even remember.

carmensandiego i am offended on your behalf. That's too much interviewing. You and the other person both deserve jobs for just sticking it out this long. Gahhhh.

I think all of us who are unfufilled in our jobs right now, need to start some sort of company, I'm sure we have enough width of talent we could be some big ole consultant firm of something. Plus we'd never get dinged for being on HiH.

H did some RA work on the high speed rail project in grad school. We were definitely routing for it when we lived out there. It’s definitely a lightening rod out here and even I’m kind of over it because, I mean when is it going to happen? But I love high speed rail at heart and would love it to be available. My brother consulted on it for a year, and said it probably won't ever happen. I would totally use high speed rail to anywhere. I think next year I'm going to try and convince my family to take the train from Truckee to Denver to visit my brother's new baby. We've done that drive, and I'd rather pay for a sleeping berth.

You all are making me feel better bc I'm 38 and don't know what I want to be when I grow up.
I had had wistful thoughts of going back to teaching but then the CRT garbage started and I remembered that "just close the door and teach" doesn't exist anymore. Also, people suck?
I just need someone to pay me for what I'm good at. But I really like the flexibility and time with my kids as a SAHM. IDK. H keeps telling me to start a Substack 🤣
