My brother consulted on it for a year, and said it probably won't ever happen. I would totally use high speed rail to anywhere. I think next year I'm going to try and convince my family to take the train from Truckee to Denver to visit my brother's new baby. We've done that drive, and I'd rather pay for a sleeping berth. Are you on train tok? You'd love it I am not, but will totally look it up. It should go nicely with my llama and donkey rescue tok hahah.

I'm turning 40 in exactly a month. Luckily the pan de queso + a 3 year old hasn't let me think about it at all.

carmensandiego, sorry that the job didn't work out. Sometimes I think it's harder when the competition is so fierce and prolonged. Then again, the resources invested in meeting with you at such length must indicate you were a excellent contender. Re middle age crisis and change of career paths, some years ago a friend accepted a really great buy out from her employer, decided to move to a college town away from the big city, but close enough to have a lot of resources, and bought out a flower shop because she thought it would be great to be creative and bring happiness or comfort to people through flowers. One of her great hobbies had been creating wreaths and bouquets for friends over the years. And, from her buy out after investment, the shop just needed to break even or even could lose a little, not bring in a livelihood. I envied her so much! Once it became an actual job it was not fun at all, she said. Eventually she sold out and moved back to a more metro area and is now doing volunteer work, which also has more of its share of politics, etc., than she had foreseen. I was so disillusioned LOL.

Ugh I am sorry to hear that carmensandiego. I know how crushing that kind of feeling is when you donāt get the job. Itās such a shitty feeling especially when you know you were a top candidate. I hope something just as good and better comes along for you.

greykitty That reminded me of how I loved the idea of a dream job owning a nonprofit animal sanctuary for un-adoptable dogs. Then I worked for a sanctuary that was exactly that, and saw how absolutely all consuming it was for the owner to run it. I realized I was not cut out for that at all and it was so much more than just playing with and feeding dogs every day.

You all are making me feel better bc I'm 38 and don't know what I want to be when I grow up. I had had wistful thoughts of going back to teaching but then the CRT garbage started and I remembered that "just close the door and teach" doesn't exist anymore. Also, people suck? I just need someone to pay me for what I'm good at. But I really like the flexibility and time with my kids as a SAHM. IDK. H keeps telling me to start a Substack š¤£ What is substack?

I did not get the Big Job. I'm pretty sad about it. It's also part of my mid life crisis I think. So I really identify with that part of the conversation. Right now I feel like my life doesn't quite fit. Am I on the right job path? Is there anything else? My kids are getting more independent, so what do I like? I honestly don't even remember. Literally just said ādamnit!ā reading this. Iām so sorry.

I had my midlife job crisis last year. Had the perfect job on paper that I had worked my way towards for a decade...and was miserable. It took me some time to come to terms with leaving the field as I had built my identity around it. But itās been so much better on the other side.
My only advice is donāt shut down paths before you even have a chance to explore them. I think (in general) women especially have a harder time envisioning themselves outside their familiar environments or think āI donāt know anything about thatā and self-select out. You all are intelligent, engaged women and there are opportunities out there for you.

Could you imagine the pen orders from this lot? i have never confessed my true pen feels- but my favorite pens are always the free ball points that you get from promotional things. But they have to be the slim bodied ones that retract. I treasure those pens. Lol

I enjoy the uniball signo 207 medium point for my pen order š Sending so much love to all of you who are struggling. I am definitely having a mid life job crisis for sure. dc2london CRT has destroyed my love of teaching. It blew up on me this year to the point where I ended up changing my name here so students couldnāt find me. I handled things ārightā according to my admin and teaching coach (yes I even have a coach to help me through this, my district is truly awesome for offering it), but it was exhausting and took over my life the month of December. Between that and pandemic teaching? Oof. I donāt want to teach high school anymore. I started a cycling website and am now taking online business classes to start an online business. I have a womenās cycling website and community that I run and will be creating cycling confidence/weight loss programs. I also now do freelance writing for another womenās cycling website thatās more established than mine and itās been an awesome opportunity becuse I have always loved to write ( so if we start something and you need a copywriter, Iām your girl!). I am 18 years into teaching and my whole retirement is wrapped up in it. Walking away now would mean having pretty much no retirement, so I am not doing it yet, but I am doing this on the side so that I can make more options for myself. I donāt want to feel stuck doing what I donāt love anymore. I do still love teaching so I will find a new group of people to teach something different, and am determined to find a way to make enough money to replace my current income and build a new retirement situation if I ultimately decide I want to leave.

I love those moves cyclegirl. What a great way to incorporate what you like and grow more individually. Retirement is a big reason I'm also wanting to move away from traditional work. I just want to rely less on typical capitalistic systems. The less i have to purchase and the more time i spend outside, the happier i feel.

I feel asleep reading the results of my Google search of āwhat if I like working all the timeā if that gives you any sense of what effed up spiral Iām in right now. Lol. Iām working so much right now and I know itās not healthy but I also kind of love work and canāt stop and I donāt know if Iām just fucked up or brainwashed or making really terrible life decisions. But I feel like I might regret the amount of time Iām spending working and that scares me a bit. Idk. Word vomit. Im not going to work today so that will be a good mental break.
