August BOTM books are up I am not sure about them. I need to research them. I may get the Shari Lapena one. Or maybe I'll do one of the fan favorite ones now that I know that is an option.

I LOVED the Kiss Quotient so I'm going to pick The Heart Principle and add on The Bride Test.

I'm picking The Inheritance and Once There Were Wolves. The Wolves one didn't really jump out at me from the description, but the reviews are really good for it.

I finished Court of Roses and Thorns and itās going to be tough to wait 2 months for the next one from the library. I was starting to get some Outlander vibes in the last quarter (the violence, torture, get together only to be torn apart) which made me really frustrated and almost not want to finish, so Iām hoping the rest of the series isnāt too much like that. The second book in the trilogy has a very different vibe and is the best of the series in my opinion! That's good to know. It doesn't stray too Twilight with two love interests, does it? I was worried about that towards the end of this one too.

byjove I'm not sure how to answer that about the two love interests, without spoiling things. For a bit there are 2 but it resolves in the next book.

A Sand County Almanac by Aldo Leopold was very good. It ranks up with some of Rachel Carsonās writings for me. Leopold is associated with the modern wildlife ecology movement. His writings are referenced in every other book I read so it was a worthwhile read for me. For a quick romance I read Among the Poppies by Jānell Ciesielski, one of the authors imapenguin recommended (thank you!). It was good. Iām halfway through The Songbird and the Spy but itās not grabbing me as quickly as Poppies did.

I finished The Truth About Melody Browne by Lisa Jewel. It was ok. Very tragic sad story but it also felt flat in a lot of areas.
I just started The Perfect Stranger by Megan Miranda. So far so good.

I just finished It Begins At the End and it was sooo good. The writing is sort of jumpy between locations and characters so I had to reread in a couple of places but worth it.

I finally finished a horror book that I have been pushing through, The Queen of the Cicadas, and I wanted to love it because Iāve loved everything Iāve read by that author but it just didnāt grab me at all.
I finished Shit, Actually by Lindy West and loved it. Each essay is a spoiler filled Ā«Ā reviewĀ Ā» of various movies and it is hilarious. I highly recommend it!
I just started Dead Dead Girls, which is a mystery set in 1920ās Harlem and I am really enjoying it so far.

Just finished The 7 Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, it was sadder than I anticipated.
Rolling right into Local Woman Missing and expecting all the drama and twists and turns.

I have been reading The Darkest Flower, and I just really hate the main character. I think thatās the point, but my gosh. I am not rooting for her. Lol. Itās definitely intriguing, though.

Devil in Disguise, Lisa Kleypas - First Kleypas Iāve liked in awhile. Lots of the usual cliches, but mostly deployed in a way that keeps the story interesting. Also the return of Kleypasā best redeemed villain to hero ever, Sebastian. Heās insanely problematic in her first book, and then sheās like ājust kidding he didnāt mean any of that!ā in his book, but itās still her best.
It Happened One Summer - Bought this because they used Schittās Creek to describe it. It started off genuinely funny enough for me to laugh aloud a few times. Then a hard left into zero jokes, insta-love, and many, many dramatic monologues. It wasnāt bad, just wish the author had kept the original tone as it was much more fun.

Monarchs and Milkweed: A Migrating Butterfly, a Poisonous Plant, and Their Remarkable Story of Coevolution by Anurag Agrawal was too deep of a deep dive into the science for me. It was like a baby textbook and I do not want mathematical equations in my book. I skimmed a bunch of chapters but still know too much about monarch sex š I have to pick something lighter for my next read.

Overall I liked it, I was just disappointed that it started out genuinely making me laugh and then bailed on the humor. āFunnyā romance novels so often rely on āand then they both laughed and laughed!ā rather than actually being funny. I plan to read the sequel sheās writing next, so Iām hoping for a better balance of jokes and death (literally this book talked about death a LOT).

I really liked how she dealt with keeping them apart without a stupid misunderstanding about nothing. It was definitely soap opera, but I didnāt find it annoying. Lisa Kleypas (along with Julia Quinn) was my first intro to romance novels. I ADORED the wallflower series in my early 20s. Reading them again a few years ago, I was wincing pretty hard at some problematic storylines and behavior. Devil in Winter, Sebastian and Evieās book, is sooo good. But you have to ignore the absolutely inexcusable things he did in the previous book. So as a stand-alone, love it. But if you think of him as the character in the previous book š I need to teach a college course on romance novels. I want to do the analysis and people are just āhoney itās trash just enjoy itā š¬

And also that the sex scenes between the characters were handled in a slightly more modern way (especially on the beach) than the typical tropes. Curious if itās a reflection of the characters vs a more recent publication date and trying to please the current audience. Iād take your class!
