I’m gutted that Rep Pelosi used those words. I think highly of her and I know I shouldn’t be surprised but here I am. Again. White supremacy is so ingrained. Even Feinstein’s words were better than this and she’s the one I usually cringe at.

Barack Obamas statement well that pic doesnt translate well: text below Today, a jury in Minneapolis did the right thing. For almost a year, George Floyd’s death under the knee of a police officer has reverberated around the world — inspiring murals and marches, sparking conversations in living rooms and new legislation. But a more basic question has always remained: would justice be done? In this case, at least, we have our answer. But if we’re being honest with ourselves, we know that true justice is about much more than a single verdict in a single trial. True justice requires that we come to terms with the fact that Black Americans are treated differently, every day. It requires us to recognize that millions of our friends, family, and fellow citizens live in fear that their next encounter with law enforcement could be their last. And it requires us to do the sometimes thankless, often difficult, but always necessary work of making the America we know more like the America we believe in. While today’s verdict may have been a necessary step on the road to progress, it was far from a sufficient one. We cannot rest. We will need to follow through with the concrete reforms that will reduce and ultimately eliminate racial bias in our criminal justice system. We will need to redouble efforts to expand economic opportunity for those communities that have been too long marginalized. And as we continue the fight, we can draw strength from the millions of people — especially young people — who have marched and protested and spoken up over the last year, shining a light on inequity and calling for change. Justice is closer today not simply because of this verdict, but because of their work. Michelle and I send our prayers to the Floyd family, in the hopes that they may find peace. And we stand shoulder-to-shoulder with all those who are committed to guaranteeing every American the full measure of justice that George and so many others have been denied.

We have talked about it on other areas, but local elections matter. Everyone has a boss - including your local police chief. Sheriffs are elected, but typically receive funding from the board of supervisors/commissioners/whatever else they're called. Policing needs reform and needs voices. Let me know if you want talking points. I'm working with young voters in a district that from the local to congressional level rarely even has challengers in any races. Like starting from "what is a city councilor/alderman?" kind of basics to help empower them to even understand how votes make a difference. Our local police dept and sheriff are especially problematic and I'd love anything you have on the matter since honestly I'm still learning a lot myself. Here are a few quick thoughts off the top of my head. I am always happy to point you to more in depth resources, but I suggest getting to know your local law enforcement first. Have a look at their policies. What is considered a use of force? Gun display? Taser display? Or use? What about a pursuit? Is that a vehicle incident or a use of force? When can they pursue? When do they have to back off? How is the force reviewed? Is there a panel or board? Who appoints citizens? Could you (general you) join? Where is the application? How many out of compliance uses of force has the department had? None??!? Does that seem likely? Or is the policy so poorly done that only the foolish or arrogant get caught? What piece of equipment do they use for cell phone warrants? Do they do cell phone tracking without a warrant? www.eff.org/deeplinks/2021/03/eff-files-amicus-brief-challenging-warrantless-cell-phone-search-retention-andDo they do antibiased based policing? Is there a restriction on the amount of overtime? These things are tied because there is research that when officers work too much off duty, their brains revert to the inherent bias we all have. What de-escalation training do they do? Is it the short one (40 hours)? Or do they commit to having officers attend the several weeks long training? Look up 21st Century Policing. It's an Obama-era group that wrote a 100+ page philosophy. Has your department incorporated the six pilars? How thoroughly? Is there continuing training?

You all must be way ahead of me, I have no idea what the Nancy thing is. But I just wanted to share feelings here. Relief that he’s being “held accountable”—like such a thing exists as truly being held accountable given the circumstances—but those emotions feel wrong too. Like, in a better place the relief that the “right” thing was done and “justice” shouldn’t even enter into it. It should feel very grim and somber.
Eta: apparently basically everything you all already said.

AOC live now on IG saying some things that really resonate - this was important but "verdicts are not a replacement for policy change"

thank you so much carmensandiego, I really appreciate it. We've got people who want to make a difference but not much organization here, so starting points like this are really helpful.

Yes. Saw a tweet that this was not justice, this was accountability. A long ways to go until justice is served.

I dont think he was stunned or smug. I think that is just what a person looks like when there is an absence of humanity in them.

I just watched the Nancy clip and it was so out of touch to say the least. How do you thank someone for being murdered?

I saw someone (I didn’t catch a name but it was a law professor) talking on MSNBC prior to the verdict that no matter the outcome that it doesn’t automatically mean POC need to be okay with Leo’s essentially. That this really is just a start and won’t change many feelings until it’s a continual outcome.

What Nancy said us very “thank you to the black women who voted” sentiment I hear around elections. How is it that even with police brutality cases, white women keep saying this type of tone deaf stuff?

I have been sitting with this in my head while doing stuff with DS and my parents and I feel so heavy. Like, I don’t feel this sense of relief that I thought I’d get with a guilty verdict. Probably because of what everyone is saying- this really doesn’t change much. I’m glad for the verdict but..... sigh. And I cannot begin to imagine how Black America feels right now.

The verdict made me cry. Small Part relief that jury found him guilty But mostly just cry that nobody should die like that. Nobody should die for $20 And so much more. That poc keep dying and it has to stop. This verdict is just one drop of ok in a huge bucket of shit.

I am glad he was found guilty because he clearly is. But I feel no relief. There have been so many murders since George Floyd, it doesn’t feel like this will ever end. Justice is so much more than this. I’m gutted.

So very relieved that there is accountability. I hate that we couldn't even be sure of accountability for a murder that happened on camera. But I hope George Floyd's family is being taken care of right now.

I am very pleasantly surprised by the verdict- both the speed and the result. One tiny, but essential, step forward. Holding the Floyd family close.
