Is it just me or is 8 weeks to sentencing a really long time? Granted, I haven't practiced criminal law in well over a decade, but why so long? The judge can push the sentence up based on aggravated factors and that is presented to him in written statements.

*snip* But considering the judge apparently thinks its going to be overturned I'm not hopeful.
Really? Fuck. I mean maybe not but he said it yesterday in the courtroom. I just...
I hope they poll the jurors on whether or not they heard/saw Ms. Waters comments so they can put that to rest.

Really? Fuck. I think that is hard to say definitively. He suggested there was a colorable issue for appeal but I don’t think that means he thinks it’s going to be overturned.

There should be a presentence report that includes interviews and victim impact statements. It gives enough time to prepare the report and the judge to review it.

Same. It doesn’t even feel like justice, because it’s not enough and there’s so much left to do, but I feel like a lot of my tension has been released atm.

Bernie Sanders SM Statement
The jury's verdict delivers accountability for Derek Chauvin, but not justice for George Floyd. Real justice for him and too many others can only happen when we build a nation that fundamentally respects the human dignity of every person. The trauma and tragedy of George Floyd’s murder must never leave us. It was a manifestation of a system that callously devalues the lives of Black people. Our struggle now is about justice—not justice on paper, but real justice in which all Americans live their lives free of oppression. We must boldly root out the cancer of systemic racism and police violence against people of color.

I feel kind of numb today. Like we’ve been following the trial but it just feels hopeless still. Especially with all the recent deaths. I’m glad that monster will be locked up. But there are so many more Chauvins out in the field still. Sorry I’m pessimistic right now.

So how does sentencing go with trials like this? Will he have to do the minimum of the higher charges or will be given different time based on each charge? Does the judge also get to decide if it's time all together or time back to back?
Sorry my mind is jumbled I can't think of the right words. I started crying when he read the verdict and I didn't expect to haha. Thank goodness

Keith Ellison: this wasn’t justice but accountability. Justice is in your hands now.

This is where I’m at. It was the right verdict. I just hope it means more for systemic change and not just a distraction so the system can continue to operate how it always has.

Chauvin was for sure a sacrifice of the system so that they can continue their status quo. It feels a bit disingenuous considering how many more get a mere slap in the hand.

This is just a small step in a direction we need to seriously dig into more on so many levels.

I wasn’t able to watch or listen to the trial. I’m still having a super hard time consuming any media related to it. But I’m relieved for the verdict. That the right person is held accountable this time. But the system is so broken. It’s so hard to see how far we need to go. I’m just heartbroken for George’s family and all families like his who have suffered at the hands of police.

We have talked about it on other areas, but local elections matter. Everyone has a boss - including your local police chief. Sheriffs are elected, but typically receive funding from the board of supervisors/commissioners/whatever else they're called.
Policing needs reform and needs voices. Let me know if you want talking points.

Also thinking of the families who did not get accountability for the deaths of their loved ones. Especially Valerie Castile right now.

I think the fact that we were all sitting with held breath waiting for a conviction on a murder that was literally on tape says something about how far we need to go.
It should not be this hard.
It should not have happened in the first place.

Let me know if you want talking points. I'm working with young voters in a district that from the local to congressional level rarely even has challengers in any races. Like starting from "what is a city councilor/alderman?" kind of basics to help empower them to even understand how votes make a difference. Our local police dept and sheriff are especially problematic and I'd love anything you have on the matter since honestly I'm still learning a lot myself.

I had hoped for at least the manslaughter charge. I didn’t expect to get more. I am very surprised and think the prosecution did an amazing job.

Nancy needs to a) shut the fuck up and b) shut the fuck up. She should have said zero things this evening Eta: what she should have said is that this isn't for her to speak on and then with great respect and support wordlessly hand the microphone to the CBC
