I still like the therapist...maybe not in real life, but certainly keeps the story moving. We're already 1/3 done with this series (sniff).
I do like how all the characters so far are reasonably well rounded and just not just 'bad guys', including our antagonists so far. Even John Walker has some sympathetic aspects. Although he always truly goes just a little too far. What's up with being on a first name basis with Sam and Bucky even if they're all past or present military guys. I so wanted to hear something about that's Captain Rogers, Sergeant Barnes, and Pararescueman Wilson to you, sir! And if sometime Bucky wants to forget the rules when it comes to Walker....
In my mind that use of 'asset' was such a call back to Pearce and his attitude.
I do have to wonder what kind of PR campaign or other explanation went out globally about Bucky, though. While Isaiah IMO seemed to link Bucky with Hydra still, no one else seems uneasy in his presence. Sure, he's with Sam and Sam is always a reassuring and good presence, but did Bucky get that firmly and positively linked with the Avengers post Blip? So much backstory for fan fiction to delve into.
I'm still curious about the time line. When Sam asked whether Bucky told Steve about Isaiah, I wondered when that conversation would have taken place? When Bucky was in Wakanda healing? How much time passed between the last battle with Thanos and Steve leaving to replace the Stones?
So, that vaccine in the truck? That couldn't have been superserum the Power Broker was upset about losing to the Flag-Smashers, right?
And I still want to know where that shield came from LOL...it's not Steve's original shield

Ok can I just say I LOVED the marching band intro?? Reminds me of good days. “Punching your way out of a problem” was not lost on me. Don’t you try to make parallels with Steve, marvel. Super awkward way for Bucky to waltz back into sams life, months with no contact and Sam doesn’t look surprised to see him? I know it’s a pretty overused trope, but it always takes me aback every time. I like that they’re together again tho. Bucky being the cranky grandpa I always wanted him to be. They have great banter/chemistry. That police stop scene was so realistic. It makes me so mad. Oooooo John walker is going to get his ass kicked with that “he’s too valuable of a asset” shit. I really thought Zeno was going to be behind that text to karli. Forgot he’d be I n high security 🤦🏻♀️ This one had a weird flow to it. I can’t really put my finger on it. I think Sam is pretty used to holding things close to his chest. I'm also assuming he's not totally surprised that Bucky showed up. He's probably been expecting it since he turned over the shield. I will hate John Walker to the end of my days. Especially with all his bullshit. About Bucky being an asset and trying to push Sam into being his sidekick to make his Captain America-ness seem more legit. I understand that he's probably not a bad guy, but he's a propaganda machine and I will not get over that. I felt a little mad at Isaiah for his needling of Bucky because if anyone understands what it's like to be tortured and experimented on, it's Bucky. But Isaiah also has every right to his feelings. He was used and abused too. The US government did him dirty and they didn't apologize or pardon him like they did for Bucky. Thats a really good point about sam.
Yesss John Walker is on my shitlist. I totally appreciate that they are portraying John Walker as a guy who really is trying to do his best job but just doesn't get it. Still hate his guts, but I really really like how they are going about it.
I thought the entire interaction between Bucky and Isaiah was well done. It highlighted the vastly different experiences of Steve, a white soldier who received the serum who went on to become an international hero, and Isaiah, a Black soldier who received the (a serum? do we know which version he got?) serum who went on to spend 30 years in prison and was tortured. Definitely both Bucky and Isaiah have every right to their feelings as victims of torture and experimentation.
I'm probably going to watch this episode again this weekend, I'm positive I missed a bunch of stuff. And I'm very interested in the flagsmashers.

And I still want to know where that shield came from LOL...it's not Steve's original shield To the bolded, he reminds me of those guys that you meet one time and they act like they're your best friend without taking the trouble to know you. It's definitely an interesting delve into social norms and how sometimes those are bypassed and rubs people the wrong way (especially when the dude breaking those norms took your best friend's shield and name). I also would have liked to see them be like "No, Captain Walker"
I think Bucky could have told Steve about Isaiah during CA:Civil War while they went to Siberia and Zemo had killed the supersoldiers left in cryo. That would definitely have made sense to have a conversation about Isaiah then

pianolove , great point about Siberia. But I suppose movie-logistics would have made it difficult to bring up yet another important character to shoe horn in. And now I want to see a vignette about Siberia, and Bucky's thoughts about sharing knowledge about Isaiah with Steve right then. Putting even more stress on Steve? So many ramifications! I did think it was interesting that Bucky apparently knew exactly where Isaiah lived; hmm. I suppose Walker et al might have access to that info as well, but maybe doesn't think it important to seek out and learn from prior super soldiers? Even though John isn't a supersoldier, I wonder if he'd be truly interested in knowing what someone like Isaiah dealt with, just from the military angle, if nothing else. Although I doubt Walker would even get into Isaiah's house. I did like the parallels, and differences, between Steve's dog and pony show introduction as Captain America, and Walker's. I do not like what I see as Walker's arrogance, even if we say it's somewhat rooted in the desire to do a good job. Steve was righteous, as we all know - but I never really got arrogance from him. So far I think Wyatt Russell is doing a great job of treading that line as an actor. Still want Bucky to grab the shield right out of his hands and maybe Sam can whap him with his wings. Hard. I'm amused by all the comments about John Walker and Mjolnir - yeah, sorry, John, I doubt you're worthy.

athn64, Hmm, and maybe another link to our probable new Young Avenger were Bucky to return and be able to make amends. The internet told me that these are the names revealed so far on the amends list - including our friend Zemo. A. Rostov P.W. Hauser F. Gannod I. Tahlazar H. Zemo H. Henrikson N. Sari T. Osman L. Kaminski M. Kaminski C. Kusnetsov Y. Nakasima C. Holbein S. Whitaker J. Weaver

So do we know if Walker got a version of the serum or is he just a really good soldier from all his years of active duty?
Also I rewatched Captain America TFA this morning and seeing Agent Carter made me mad all over again. They didn’t even really have great chemistry. I CANNOT STAND Natasha but even she had better chemistry with him. I know it’s an UO to dislike Agent Carter lol.

I recently found out that Sharon Carter was supposed to have most of the flirting and character development with Steve in Winter Solder but they replaced her with Nat after ScarJo threw a fit. As far as I know, in this continuity, Walker isn't a super soldier. But maybe he is, and we'll find out in the future.

I know it would have worked better if they'd showed the actual conversation he had with Bucky (cause he totally knew), but Steve had a right to be selfish for once in his life. But I never really hardcore shipped Steve with anyone (though I do read more Steve/Sharon stories than anything).

Regardless of Endgame's conclusion. I will go to my grave saying Bucky knew exactly what Steve was planning there. To be fair, I think I understand theoretically the crossing arcs between Steve and Tony that the Russos were going for. But my heart disagrees. I do like Agent Carter as a character and the show was great. I don't think this John Walker has the serum (yet). But it will be interesting to see who else may have it, or is in line to get it. But my knowledge extends only to fan fiction and whatever the internet is telling me today. ETA - obviously I'm a Stucky true believer.

I didn’t ship Steve with anyone else in particular and I don’t fault him for doing something for himself, I just find their love story in particular a little far fetched and strange that he would be so lovesick after all that time for a woman he barely even dated. I mean he lived longer as an adult in current time than in the past, the idea that he never found another woman that he loved just as much seems odd. I guess it speaks to his loyal puppy nature to its core though.
I also agree that Bucky knew.

They could keep using him forever and ever, but eventually we'd all get tired of it. And so they got to keep it fresh. I'm really excited for some Young Avengers, because they are a great team and much more diverse than the original one. I really want Chris Evans as Johnny Storm to show up in Multiverse of Madness or whatever.

I deeply disliked what they did with Steve in endgame. While it's annoying that ScarJo was a jerk, I'm glad they didn't go further with Steve and Sharon because of the whole aunt/niece thing. That just would have been wrong. Lol. Yeah. I wonder if they would have gone a different way though. I refuse to believe they had it all set up from the beginning. I've seen a lot of people complain about Steve and sharon's one awkward kiss and try and make it a big deal. But they never did anything else.

Oh I was reading wrong and somehow thought they meant there would be backstory on Steve with old lady Carter and not Emily Van Camp lol duh me. I love the actress so I would have been ok with it, I think. Yeah kinda weird that she was her niece but eh it’s not illegal or incest or anything so whatever.
Also related to the show, I agree with everyone else that said they appreciate the sort of dual sided nature of Walker. I like that it’s hard to completely dislike him since he does seem to genuinely want to do the right/good things with the position that was bestowed upon him. I don’t hate him (yet).

John Walker reminds me of Homelander from The Boys. Yes!!!

Post by greykitty on Mar 28, 2021 6:33:11 GMT -6
I saw this description of Homelander in a Men's Health write up - and seemed pretty on point to me. While Superman and Steve Rogers don't have the same powers, their innate wanting to do good for the sake of good makes them similar characters to me. And, yes, I grew up with the non-Snyder view of the DCU and Justice League. I'm reasonably sure that John Walker isn't all out evil in this series - but is he the good man Erskine looked for? That Steve looked for? Homelander is the most important character in The Boys. He makes the plot move. He's the most famous Supe. He's the most powerful Supe. He's the first Supe (that we know of...we'll learn more about the real "first Supe" in Season 3). And just from looking at him, he's clearly the...Superman...Supe. (He's also got a little bit of Captain America in him too—just look at that Evans-esque hair). There's one big difference between our guy Homelander and Superman/Cap, though, and it's the whole...you know, being evil thing. www.menshealth.com/entertainment/g33866080/the-boys-superheroes-powers/

I’m watching episode 2.
Can someone explain the flag smasher people’s mission? They don’t like countries and liked it better when half the population was gone? I’m not really following what they want.

And I get what Sam meant about 'people with resources', but, uh, I kind of didn't like Karli's comment about caring about the people who came back from the Blip more than the Left Behind (sic). Granted, I was influenced by a couple of fan fics I read that talked about groups being angry when about the Returned using up resources, etc. But I think Spellman and the FAWS director have both commented that everyone on the show thinks they're the hero. Maybe everyone does believe their cause is righteous. And I'm still not sure about what exactly is in those vials - kind of don't think it was produced by Pfizer, let's say. But what would you do with a small army of super soldiers? Especially if the super serum really does tend to enhance intrinsic characteristics of the recipient - makes a good man great but then look at the Red Skull. I will argue that Bucky always was a good person with a strong tendency to protect those weaker than himself. I did see this article about Flag Smasher and how the current FAWS writers are using that story line. link

I can see an anti-nationalist vs US govt-controlled Capt America storyline but I don’t quite get how the Blip/return plays into it. More to come it sounds like.

Honestly, I would love to read any number of stories/watch any number of shows that deals with the Blip and its effects.
I can well imagine how turbulent everything is at this point post-Blip - economy, politics, religion, on and on. So many legitimate questions out there, so many answers that conflict yet make sense? To tell the truth, Thanos had some good points there. Well, til he got really annoyed at Cap and the other other Avengers and it became personal LOL

One thought I had was that Sam, and the therapist, don't seem to worry about 'busting Bucky's chops' - but that's also treating him as a person, as someone they tease, but care for, and maybe most importantly, don't fear. Don't fear the person who was the Winter Soldier. That's kind of amazing.
But, it could certainly be taken another way it's 'complicated', which seems to be the mantra of this show, right? And speaking of complicated - how Bucky and Sam see each other, and their relationship to Steve, is certainly complicated in my mind.

I liked the interview with Amy Aquino, Bucky's therapist. I thought this portion was interesting especially: And your character comes in and really starts a conversation about mental health amid this massive world of action and adventure. What sort of conversations did you have with Kari [Skogland, director] and Malcolm [Spellman, head writer] about that aspect of the series? Well, they were limited. I think that they understood that I got it. There was no big pressure on it to deliver a message. It was written in the lines. And I loved that about it. It's not totally professional, obviously, for a therapist to refer to their own personal struggles with the same thing, but they wrote it because she's talking to him soldier to soldier. She's letting him know when you're feeling this stuff and you feel alone, that's what's going to kill you. And the fact is you shouldn't feel alone, you don't need to feel alone, but you've got to be the one to control that. You've got to be the one to do the reaching out. Or you are just committing suicide, figuratively or literally, which is what happens to a whole lot of people with PTSD. So, we didn't have conversations, per se, but they just made it happen in the script. That's what we're talking about. We're talking about dealing with the things that are bothering you and acknowledging them so that you can move forward. link

Just watched Episode 3. Now H owes me a backrub. He was thinking Sharon had the serum, but she didn't show any evidence of it. Now he thinks she's the Power Broker. I'm hoping that she's actually undercover for some government agency. But mostly because I don't want her to be the bad guy.
If I was Sam, I'd have punched Bucky at the beginning. Hypothetical my ass. Bucky breaking Zemo out was a bad decision in my book. But we finally get to see him in his mask and all.
I feel like Karli has finally stepped over the line. She's been very much a Robin Hood steal from the rich person but hasn't been actively hurting people intentionally. But I'm guessing Momma Donya was, if not her real mother, at least the woman that helped raise her. And her death broke a part of her.
I'm kind of not shocked that Zemo killed the scientist. He's been very vocal about being anti-hero and anti-enhanced. Sam being shocked was actually more shocking. Like what did you expect, the guy isn't a good guy.
I hated the scientist anyways. The way that he feels like he's a god and that Isaiah (the blood samples!) isn't a person to him. But we have a little more information about how the US Government was exploiting Isaiah.
Oh, and Walker continues to be the worst. The way he reacted after that guy spit on him. The way he feels entitled. And the decision to do things that aren't exactly legal or moral.
I'm sure I have more thoughts. But those are the preliminary.

Aww, Steve's notebook.
Thanks for the exposition on Global Repatriation Council.
I don't like Karli. I see her sympathetic aspects, but....
Zemo is strangely charming. I wonder if he's our devil, like Hannibal Lector. Nice that he kept his personal fortune while imprisoned. Can't be mad about Nagel myself. ETA - that Zemo took him out.
Finally people recognize the Winter Soldier!
I guess we'll figure out who the Power Broker is sometime.
Cheerios!
It is hard to run in heels.
Whoa, Sharon! She's complicated too. Everything in this show is complicated.
Well, hello Ayo!
I kind of like Lemar. And his reactions while he's translating.
Hmm, other people feel about John Walker the way I do.
Sebastian always has nice hair.
Not going to move that seat up.

Me neither on the notebook. I thought it was going to be one of, or a successor to, one of Bucky's old notebooks. So I was just getting into the theory that Steve really is chilling on the Moon or in space with Director Fury and/or Skrulls, but that Bucky has his notebook gives me pause. Also makes me wonder how much time was spent, and what was discussed, before Steve hopped in the time machine to return the Stones.
I do think that's the first time I've seen a cover blown by a routine reference to breakfast cereal. Actually laughed aloud at that line.
And now I wonder about what Bucky's continuing(?) relationship with Wakanda is. I think most of the writing and filming was done before Chadwick Boseman's death, but assuming they had or made enough time post production to change up anything they needed to to play into Phase 4. I'm still so sad about his death - so young.
I can see Bucky paying back his, and Steve's, debts to Wakanda if they ever called on him. Sure, Bucky fought and 'died' for the world, and Wakanda, in Infinity War, but what's one death among friends - especially if it didn't take? And they didn't make that whole reference to White Wolf for nothing, I'd guess.
So Sam can't get a loan but he can guarantee Sharon a pardon? Wondrous are the ways of Marvel, I guess.
Now I'm thinking it was T'Challa who pulled strings to get Bucky a pardon somehow - also assuming Bucky made it clear he wanted to somehow start making amends and had to leave Wakanda to do so. Yes, I think T'Challa and Shuri would have given Bucky a home in their country after Steve 'left'. Then again, I've read so much fan fiction, I often get canon and fiction mixed up.
I'm sure not a surprise, but I do see Sam picking up, and keeping, the shield - for all the reasons Steve saw in him, and more.

Oh, yeah, I'm not sure Sam can actually get the pardon. He thinks he can, but he's kind of on the otherside of the government right now too.
I do wonder what role Ayo is going to play and if T'Challa shows up or is mentioned. I know that he'll have an off screen death before Black Panther 2, but not sure if it will be now or later.
