Oh hi, I bought some dahlia tubers today. I ordered some dahlias from Swan Island Dahlias but they haven’t shipped yet. I’d like to get them soon and start them indoors. We are getting a patio quote tomorrow. We tore out our deck 2 years ago then unexpectedly had to have the whole back of the house graded because the area under the deck sloped so dramatically towards the house. We planned to do the patio last year, but DH and I had the great patio stand off of 2020. I think we are both finally ready to compromise and get it done!

I found out this morning that I received a merit scholarship that will cover 1/4 of my spring tuition. It’s not a huge amount, but every little bit helps. I’m feeling proud of myself.

Today is my last day off work (I took a vacation to just exist for a few days). I'm not ready to go back tomorrow.
Spent the morning gardening (because I bought yet more bulbs - dinner plate dahlias this time) and potting up my veggies to a bigger size.
We cut down a lot of trees that were too close to the house a few weeks ago and I ordered a bunch of flowering trees from Arbor Day Fdn to replace them because I can do a yard without trees for the birds. And MOAR flowers. I am very anxious for them to ship.
The yard will be full of flowers from now on lol

Does anyone have leads on marigold-y yellow 14-16" outdoor planters? I've looked in approximately 365,568,927,364 places and they're either super cheap plastic (like won't last a season) or highlighter yellow. My next step is finding one that's white and just spray painting it but.. effort. I don't care if they're plastic as long as they're thicker and don't look like junk, but I'd prefer ceramic. If anyone has seen any, please let me know!

lemondrop , we bought some nice plastic pots that size in spring 2017 from a local garden center and one of them is that deeper yellow. They are still going strong, but of course there is no brand or manufacturer name on them. I recommend them, though! :/ ETA they came in medium blue (on step above the yellow), a nice medium purple, and true red- we bought one in each color, if you see anything like that listed for sale

I'll keep looking Edit: to remove the pic JIC

byjove, the medium blue or red would work perfectly, too. We have a white house with a medium blue shutter color (which I hate but they were freshly painted when we moved in last year, and you have to petition the HOA to change them so... blue they are staying). My concern with red was looking super patriotic, so I was leaning yellow. But a true red might be easier to find.

lemondrop , I just tried a search, and these look like they could be cousins to our set. The yellow is terrible, but there are a lot of other colors to pick from. The pic of this blue one drew me in, at first I thought it was the same as ours. I think we also paid about $20 for each of them. link

I don't see yellow in stock tho.

Thanks y’all. My H kind of hurt my feelings by scoffing at the amount, so it’s nice to hear the congratulations. 😀

It was good! He came home from school all smiles. He did refuse to eat his lunch (the food wasn’t “his favorite”), but his teacher handled it well. He had school today too and was brimming with excitement that he had gotten to check books out of the library when I picked him up. ☺️

DD2 has fallen in love with the Hawaiian American Girl doll (mostly for her hula outfit with the lei). And so now she wants a hula outfit of her own. Does anyone have an age appropriate (she'll be 5 in June) resource for explaining how that's not ok?

Does anyone have an age appropriate (she'll be 5 in June) resource for explaining how that's not ok? Hmmmm. It’s a little complicated, because there are respectful ways for non-Polynesians to take part in hula. It shouldn’t be exoticized, which is obviously tricky for a 4 year old to understand, and it needs to be shared by people from the culture, rather than others appropriating it. Any money spent needs to be going to the Polynesians sharing their culture. I took Hula at a cultural center when I lived in French Polynesia - it’s so much fun and great way to really learn about another culture. We performed with leis and ti skirts at a celebration that was attended by the FP president at the time. I had friends who continued learning when they returned to the states. I wonder if there is a way that she could take an online hula class? I know that there were in-person Hawaiian and Tahitian dance classes offered throughout the Bay Area when I was living there, but I suspect that isn’t the case in most areas. There may also be some good instructional videos about Hula created by Polynesians on YouTube.

I do need to explain why buying a cheap skirt for her to play dress up with isn't good to do because it's a cultural item of significance and not a costume. I'll look into learning the dance and try and introduce it to her that way.

We just had someone come in to do an estimate for replacing our windows which are in terrible condition in a 100-year-old house. Hold me.
