Is there where I confess H and I are trying to get a grassroots rebellion going against the HOA in our new neighborhood? The neighborhood is still being built, and the developer and his family make up 70% of the board. There’s only one public meeting a year, they don’t say when they otherwise meet, and don’t publish financials except one screenshot of a budget that doesn’t add up. We moved from an old, non-HOA neighborhood in NOVA where people did things like just planting flowering trees in the (public) median just for fun to make the neighborhood look nice or organized field days for neighborhood kids. Without any covenants or fees. I miss it so much. Oh hell no. Is this a reputable developer?

Idk if “reputable” is the right word, but he’s been in the area forever and is well known for a few subdivisions. His wife is the HOA president; she is incompetent and struggles we basic communication and punctuation in her emails. We had a bunch of flooding in the neighborhood last week, and so people starting asking them where the storm water management plan was and when it was last reviewed by the city given a bunch of new construction happening and she said she wasn’t certain what that was 🤔 Based on pictures of flooding (streets impassible for hours), we got a city engineer agree to come do an inspection. So we’ll go from there. Our little group is also trying to figure out whether a recentish law regulating HOAs applies to us (we need a neighborhood lawyer on our team) and we’re pulling tax filings lol. I have no idea if they’re doing anything illegal yet, but regardless it’s not transparent and widely unethical.

I had to commute into NW DC while H was at Belvoir so we were trying to split the difference when we bought. We desperately wanted to hold onto the house because we loved it/the neighborhood so much and talk about moving back. But we were too nervous about successfully renting it and having a $$$ mortgage for a house we didn’t live in when I didn’t have a job lined up in our new area yet.

@minerva we’ve got a lot of friends down that way obviously - definitely similar vibes. Just great old family neighborhoods.
Now I’m going to sit around all day moping about how much I miss NOVA lol.

I'm going to refer back to this post every time I dream of lower home prices. Oof yeah it’s a trade off. Our payment dropped by about 60% which is obviously lovely. But in NOVA, you’re also really paying for a community, public amenities, access to good healthcare and resources, etc. We try to remind ourselves being where we live now is a good chance to save up. Because, yeah, otherwise it’s a bummer. We’re also in a generic newish build now, and I miss having mature trees/bushes in my yard/neighborhood. Basically, I’m now the obnoxious HGTV people complaining about lack of character.

There's going to be two houses going up for sale soon on my little street. Empty nesters cashing in. Both families are so nice, but I'll take new neighbors if they are equally nice

I start pristiq today and I am much excite. I also got another "oh wow" out of the chiro this morning when he felt my shoulders, so that's fun 😂 at my first appointment he was like "this is just shitty. I'm sorry, I tried to think of another word, but damn." (He's excellent, so imagine this in a good tone.) Ha! That sounds like something my chiro would say.

This is where I confess that I always thought HOA's were just for townhomes. Not regular single family homes. (I knew this before now, but I'm always a little blown away at having to pay a fee to live in a neighborhood - I think this is very urban midwest of me).

The first time I went to my old chiro (who is the chiro for many big name Crossfit athletes, so obviously people who beat their bodies to a pulp regularly), he touched my back and was like, "oh. oh no. what have you done!?!" 😂 20 sessions later, he had to do some crazy maneuver where he had to basically twist me into a pretzel and then lay his entire body on top of mine, and there was a pop somewhere deep in my back and then instant relief. After he grimaced and was like, "we try not to do that one" and I was very, "I'm not going to share that feedback with my insurance company" LOL.

Today he was like "what did you do?!" in an accusatory tone. I don't think he believed me when I said nothing. 😂 I'm 35 with a toddler, I wake up with my back in a knot. THIS IS JUST MY LIFE NOW, DOC. lol

ozziebear I also fully support taking down your HOA. Also, we moved into a boring basic subdivision home 10 years ago, and immediately started planting shrubs and trees and a garden etc etc. I look around now and am amazed at the transformation. I was just sitting on the back patio this morning enjoying all the spring bird life that flocks to our yard. I hope you can make your own little oasis too.

easier that gives me hope! We’ve started doing some landscaping and are planning to build deck on top of the sad boring concrete slab in our backyard.

Anyone have good recommendations for books helping a 3yo with learning emotions and biting?
We have Little Dinos, and also Teeth are Not for Biting. N has both memorized so I think we need to rotate more. He bit a friend at daycare today, on the stomach. Broke skin.
H said they were playing around and causing mayhem during pickup so hopefully no lasting damage but I still feel awful and want to be doing more at home to curb this. We’ve been doing a lot about hitting lately, and it seemed to be working.
Definitely regretting not getting wine at target today.

cakewench, if the bite was a more random one off that occurred during rough and tumble play it might not be a bad idea to ask your son what was happening when he bit his friend. Signed, the mom who learned once that pretending to be dinosaurs fighting included biting. 🤦🏻♀️

They were on the playground, and I think he said he got pushed. He also didn’t nap today and his behavior tanks when he’s tired so I’m not surprised (not excusing, obviously!). But is also makes getting information out of him harder. We had a long talk and I explained that if someone pushes him (or bites him or whatever) he should say “I don’t like that!” and tell his teacher, biting is wrong, etc. He really loves books so I think that will be a more effective way to help him learn. He also loves puzzles but I doubt someone makes an anti-biting puzzle

Somebody tell me to stop buying plants. In the last few weeks I've bought sunflower seeds, milkweed, some native honeysuckles, salvia, blueberry bushes, black eyed Susans....I could go on. This is on top of the seeds I started for bee balm alongside my veggie seedlings. And I'm eyeing mountain laurel next. I might have a problem. My covid gardening needs tapered too. Last Friday I built two retaining walls and tomorrow I plan to take the kids to the nursery to buy a tree for one side , and whatever DD wants to plant for the other as her own garden. My planter beds from last year still have huge tomato plants, and some celery plants from 2 months ago. I started my zuke a few weeks ago and almost want to buy another container for more. Oh and my mom sent me sweet corn seeds from Iowa since I wanted to try those. In CA. Please someone stop me. I need more land! Eta: I popped into the wrong thread so I’m sorry for zombie’ing a 3 week old topic.
